Capnocytophaga sp. isolated from a cat with chronic sinusitis and rhinitis.

A Capnocytophaga sp. was inadvertently isolated from a cat with chronic sinusitis and rhinitis when cytopathic effects were observed in Crandall-Reese feline kidney cells that had been inoculated with oropharyngeal swab samples. Although Capnocytophaga spp. are of considerable zoonotic importance, their clinical relevance for dogs or cats has not been established. However, failure to do so may be attributed to the infrequent use of specialized isolation techniques that are required to grow Capnocytophaga spp. To our knowledge, successful isolation of these organisms from a cat with nasopharyng

Purulence and gram-negative bacilli in tracheal aspirates of mechanically ventilated very low birth weight infants.

OBJECTIVE: Tracheal aspirates (TAs) from mechanically ventilated very low birth weight (VLBW) infants are frequently obtained during the evaluation of suspected sepsis, tracheitis, or ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Purulence and bacteria in Gram stain of bronchopulmonary secretions are considered signs of respiratory infection, and medical decisions are made on the assumption that they are predictors of positive bacterial tracheal cultures (TCs). The purpose of this retrospective investigation was to establish the relationship of purulence and bacteria in TA from ventilated VLBW infant

Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome secondary to Capnocytophaga canimorsus septicemia and demonstration of bacteremia by peripheral blood smear.

Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus septicemia was fatal in a previously healthy 47-year-old woman. The patient died suddenly in less than 12 hours after presentation, in spite of supportive measures, including ventilation, antibiotic coverage, pressor therapy, and multiple transfusions of blood products. The diagnosis of infection due to an unusual organism was suspected earlier in the course of management after review of the peripheral blood smear. The importance of the findings in the blood smear and their correlation with infection due to this organism are

Causal bacteria of pyogenic liver abscess.

This is a review of bacteriologic data on 175 patients with pyogenic liver abscesses seen over a period of 8 years at Veterans General Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Positive cultures were obtained from liver aspirates in 151 of the 163 patients in which cultures were taken. One hundred and twenty patient specimens grew one isolate and 31 specimens grew two or more isolates. A total of 149 aerobic gram-negative rods, 25 aerobic cocci and 29 anaerobes were isolated. Ninety of the 159 patients from whom blood was taken had positive cultures. In 11 patients, two or more isolates were grown concurrentl

Serial Neuroendoscopic Lavage for the Treatment of Elevated Cerebrospinal Fluid Protein Levels in Infants with Gram-Negative Rod Ventriculitis.

INTRODUCTION: Gram-negative rod (GNR) bacterial ventriculitis is a rare complication of shunt-dependent hydrocephalus, often requiring an extended and invasive treatment course. Accumulation of purulent material, as well as empyema and septation formation, limits circulation of antibiotics and infection clearance. Supplementation of standard care with neuroendoscopic-guided intraventricular lavage with lactated Ringer solution and fenestration of septations may facilitate infection clearance and simplify the eventual shunt construct required. Here, the utility of serial lavage for ventriculiti

The phosphoproteome of choroid plexus epithelial cells following infection with Neisseria meningitidis.

The Gram-negative bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, which causes meningitis in humans, has been demonstrated to manipulate or alter host signalling pathways during infection of the central nervous system (CNS). However, these complex signalling networks are not completely understood. We investigate the phosphoproteome of an in vitro model of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB) based on human epithelial choroid plexus (CP) papilloma (HIBCPP) cells during infection with the N. meningitidis serogroup B strain MC58 in presence and absence of the bacterial capsule. Interestingly, our data

Evaluation of the in vitro Activity of Two Fourth-Generation Cephalosporins Against Bacterial Samples Isolated From Patients in Several Brazilian Hospitals.

Cefpirome and cefepime are two fourth-generation cephalosporins recently introduced in Brazil. They have a very similar range of in vitro antimicrobial activity, but some differences have been noticed. The goal of this study was to compare the in vitro activity of cefpirome and cefepime against bacterial samples isolated in Brazilian hospitals. We studied 931 samples taken from hospitalized patients between April and June, 1998. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by the Etest method. The potency of cefpirome was similar to that of cefepime, except against enterococci and

A carbapenem-resistant clinical isolate of Aeromonas hydrophila in Japan harbouring an acquired gene encoding GES-24 β-lactamase.

Several species of Aeromonas produce the enzyme CphA metallo-β-lactamase. This study describes an isolate of Aeromonas hydrophila harbouring an acquired gene encoding the carbapenemase GES-24. This isolate was obtained from an inpatient in Okinawa, Japan, with no apparent record of travelling overseas. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of carbapenems against this isolate were 8 µg ml-1 for imipenem and 16 µg ml-1 for meropenem. Recombinant GES-24 hydrolyzed all of the tested β-lactams, including imipenem and meropenem. The genomic environment surrounding blaGES-24 was intI1-blaGES-24-aac(6

5-Lipoxygenase negatively regulates Th1 response during Brucella abortus infection in mice.

Brucella abortus is a Gram-negative bacterium that infects humans and cattle, causing a chronic inflammatory disease known as brucellosis. A Th1-mediated immune response plays a critical role in host control of this pathogen. Recent findings indicate contrasting roles for lipid mediators in host responses against infections. 5-Lipoxygenase (5-LO) is an enzyme required for the production of the lipid mediators leukotrienes and lipoxins. To determine the involvement of 5-LO in host responses to B. abortus infection, we intraperitoneally infected wild-type and 5-LO-deficient mice and evaluated th

A study on bacteriological profile in suspected cases of neonatal sepsis and its correlation with various biomarkers in the rural population of a university hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal sepsis is an infection in newborns that may be caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses and has a high death and morbidity rate. The clinical presentation of sepsis may be rather general, making it challenging to make a diagnosis. While blood culture is the most accurate method to diagnose sepsis, it is also time-consuming. Because of this, it is crucial to locate other biomarkers like C-reactive protein (CRP), high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and procalcitonin (PCT) that may aid in early identification. AIM: To learn about the bacterial composition of suspected

Antibiotic treatment of common infections: more evidence to support shorter durations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although there is increasing recognition of the link between antibiotic overuse and antimicrobial resistance, clinician prescribing is often unnecessarily long and motivated by fear of clinical relapse. High-quality evidence supporting shorter treatment durations is needed to give clinicians confidence to change prescribing habits. Here we summarize recent randomized controlled trials investigating antibiotic short courses for common infections in adult patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Randomized trials in the last five years have demonstrated noninferiority of short-course thera

Bacterial Pigment Prodigiosin Demonstrates a Unique Antiherpesvirus Activity That Is Mediated through Inhibition of Prosurvival Signal Transducers.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is among the most prevalent viral infections worldwide and remains incurable. While nucleoside analogs are used to relieve symptoms of infection, they suffer from having serious adverse effects and are unable to abolish the virus from the host. Here, we demonstrate a unique antiviral effect of prodigiosin (PG), a natural secondary metabolite produced by Serratia marcescens, on HSV infection. We show that PG naturally exerts antiviral activity against HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections. PG treatment resulted in robust inhibition of viral replication in vitro and ex vivo in cu

Microbiological Spectrum and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns of Culture-Positive Thoracic and Respiratory Specimens in Syria: A Retrospective Laboratory-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic and respiratory infections require timely microbiological diagnosis, whereas pathogen distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility may vary substantially across settings and specimen types. Local laboratory-based data can therefore support antimicrobial-resistance surveillance and interpretation of culture results. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective laboratory-based study of thoracic and respiratory culture records processed at a private referral microbiology laboratory in Damascus, Syria, from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2025. Culture-positive specimens were cat

Penfluridol synergizes with colistin to reverse colistin resistance in Gram-negative bacilli.

The growing prevalence of antibiotic resistance in multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB), exacerbated by the misuse of antibiotics, presents a critical global health challenge. Colistin, a last-resort antibiotic for severe MDR-GNB infections, has faced diminishing efficacy due to the emergence of colistin-resistant (COL-R) strains. This study evaluates the potential of penfluridol (PF), an antipsychotic drug with notable antibacterial and antibiofilm properties, to restore colistin activity against COL-R GNB in vitro. PF alone exhibited limited antibacterial activity against COL

'Omics technologies for the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms related to carbapenem-resistant and extended spectrum β-lactamase-producing Klebsiellapneumoniae.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a Gram-negative bacterium and a major cause of nosocomial infections such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), pneumonia and meningitis. Although these infections are commonly treated with the β-lactam group of antibiotics and combinations of it, (multi-)drug resistance in K. pneumoniae has steadily increased in the last few decades. Resistance to the β-lactam class of antibiotics is primarily mediated through the activation of narrow and extended-spectrum β-lactamase enzymes and changes within the bacterial cell envelope. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) has become a lar

Systemic Escherichia coli infection does not influence clinical symptoms and neurodegeneration in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

BACKGROUND: Systemic infections can influence the course of multiple sclerosis (MS), especially by driving recurrent acute episodes. The question whether the infection enhances tissue damage is of great clinical importance and cannot easily be assessed in clinical trials. Here, we investigated the effects of a systemic infection with Escherichia coli, a Gram-negative bacterium frequently causing urinary tract infections, on the clinical course as well as on neurodegeneration in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of MS. METHODS: Rats were immunized with myelin oli
