Impact of migrants on communicable diseases in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: While foreign migrants contribute to economic development, they may impact public health by transmitting communicable diseases to the local population. With its geopolitical position, Thailand has been a primary destination for migrants from neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia and beyond. This positioning makes it a focal point for examining the complexities of migration dynamics and its implications for public health. Through a quantitative analysis, this paper investigates the influence of foreign migrants on physical health issues in Thailand, exploring their impact on vari

[Conceptual framework of gambling and gambling-related harms].

Gambling is a legitimate leisure activity in many countries that many people use. However, some of them suffer significant harm because of gambling. This may involve economic, social, physical or mental harm. These harms are not only suffered by the individual gambler, but affect the family, the community and society. The aim of this text is to propose a conceptual framework for understanding the determinants of gambling and its related harms and thus, contribute to the development of prevention policies to reduce its impact on health. The framework proposed in this manuscript places present e

Expanded Medi-Cal Coverage and Persisting Access Barriers for Latino Immigrants in California.

In California, health and community-based organizations serve as vital intermediaries, helping Latino immigrants navigate Medi-Cal (the state's Medicaid program) enrollment and access to care. The 2024 Medi-Cal expansion extended eligibility to undocumented immigrants who meet income criteria. Despite this policy shift, persistent barriers to care remain at the individual, insurance system, and organizational levels. This study examines Latino immigrants' navigation of health insurance and access to care in California. As part of the MIRA Latino study, we interviewed leaders from 32 California

Unmet and Overlooked Needs of Pregnant Adolescents and Young Mothers in Zimbabwe: The Mixed-Methods "Kids With Kids" Study.

PURPOSE: Adolescent pregnancy is common across Africa. Although programs emphasize contraception, support for those who do become pregnant is limited. We conducted a mixed-methods study in Zimbabwe to understand the service gaps and the needs of pregnant adolescents. METHODS: Pregnant adolescents (<18 years) identified by community child workers underwent clinical and mental health assessment, and birth outcomes were recorded. Longitudinal in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 pregnant and postpartum adolescents in three waves; in addition, nonrepeat interviews were conducted with 10 nex

Understanding barriers and facilitators of integrating management of Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) into the Ethiopian primary health care system using Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR).

Existing studies focus on moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) management, with little attention to integrating MAM services into the health system. This study examines barriers and facilitators to integrating m (MAM) services into primary health care. We conducted a qualitative exploratory study at the policy, primary health care, and community levels in six regions of Ethiopia. We used the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) to guide the development of the data collection tools and the analysis and presentation of the findings. We purposively selected participants and cond

Housing and displacement as risk factors for negative health outcomes among people who inject drugs in Los Angeles, CA, and Denver, CO, USA.

BACKGROUND: The United States is currently experiencing a housing and homelessness crisis. In response, many cities have adopted policies of displacement that move unhoused people from place to place. Recent research indicates that these policies may have negative health impacts on unhoused people who use drugs. We sought to examine health risks associated with forced displacement among unhoused people who inject drugs (PWID). METHODS: We interviewed a community-recruited sample of opioid-using PWID in Los Angeles, CA and Denver, CO between April 2021 and November 2022 (N = 472) about their de

From HIV to Mpox: Socio-discursive Analysis of Communicable Diseases, Stigma, and Pathologization in Sexual Minorities in Brazil.

Discrimination and stigma are significant barriers to healthcare for the LGBTQIAPN+ community, necessitating a deeper analysis of their sociocultural causes. There is a notable gap in the literature regarding the understanding of socio-discursive representations and their impact on the stigmatization and pathologization of sexual minorities in the context of communicable diseases. This study aims to discuss the understanding of the sociodiscursive aspects of the health-disease process, particularly in stigmatized infectious diseases affecting the LGBTQIAPN+ community. The focus is on examining

Adopting Clean Fuels and Technologies on School Buses. Pollution and Health Impacts in Children.

RATIONALE: More than 25 million American children breathe polluted air on diesel school buses. Emission reduction policies exist, but the health impacts to individual children have not been evaluated. METHODS: Using a natural experiment, we characterized the exposures and health of 275 school bus riders before, during, and after the adoption of clean technologies and fuels between 2005 and 2009. Air pollution was measured during 597 trips on 188 school buses. Repeated measures of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), lung function (FEV1, FVC), and absenteeism were also collected monthly (1,768 visits)

Specifying quality in health care.

Quality should be a central issue in the commissioning and provision of health care. This requires a systematic approach to defining and monitoring quality. Such an approach should address: quality characteristics such as efficiency, accessibility, effectiveness (which may conflict with each other); the several levels at which quality may be specified, from general (across all health care) to specific (particular conditions or patient groups); and the methods of quality monitoring which include documented policies, clinical audit, inspection visits/patient surveys, and routine information retu

Waiting times for health services, health, and labour market outcomes.

Waiting times for health care is a significant health policy concern across many health systems, which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Long waiting times for non-emergency care generate health losses to patients because health benefits are postponed. They can increase the risk of mortality or morbidity and reduce patient ability to benefit from health care. Waiting times can also generate negative spill-over effects on labour market outcomes. For individuals in the working age, employed individuals might end up on sick leave and claim sickness benefits, or experience reduced pro

Gender differences in the relationship between income inequality and health in China: Evidence from the China Health and Nutrition Survey data.

This study examines gender differences in the relationship between income inequality and health in China. Multilevel regression models were used to analyse data from the most recent five waves (2004-2015) across 12 provinces in the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). The findings remain robust when considering alternative measures of health outcomes and income inequality. Men showed greater sensitivity to income inequality in terms of adverse health outcomes. When individuals experienced the same level of changes in income inequality, men had a higher risk of reporting poor health status

Estimating Income-Related Health Inequalities Associated with Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption in Namibia.

Disparities in resources and access to material opportunities are important determinants of income-related health inequality. This paper hypothesises that the gradient of the inequality in health between the poor and the rich is likely to depend on differences in lifestyle practices including tobacco use and alcohol abuse. Using the 2015/16 Namibia Household Income and Expenditure Survey and the Erreygers corrected concentration index, we estimate the effect of tobacco and alcohol use on income-related health inequalities. A decomposition technique was used to estimate the separate and joint c
