Network analysis of symptoms and psychological distress in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is characterized by rapid-onset, unexplained hearing impairment, frequently accompanied by symptoms such as tinnitus, dizziness, and nausea. Patients with SSNHL often experience psychological distress, including anxiety and depression, which are interconnected, offering insights for holistic management. This study aims to elucidate these connections, with a focus on anxiety and depression, using network analysis to inform holistic management strategies. Network analysis was employed to model symptom-psychological interactions, identifying central nodes

Synovial chondromatosis extending to the ear canal: An unusual cause of conductive hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is a rare benign disorder characterized by synovial metaplasia leading to the formation of osteocartilaginous nodules within the joint. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement is uncommon and typically presents non-specific symptoms. Hearing loss associated with TMJ SC is exceptionally rare. OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 70-year-old woman presenting with progressive right-sided conductive hearing loss. Clinical evaluation revealed a painless preauricular swelling associated with external auditory canal stenosis. Audiometric testing confirmed

Impact of hearing aid usage on the quality of life of the older adult in KwaZulu-Natal.

BACKGROUND: Despite the benefits of hearing aids for patients experiencing presbycusis, their adoption and consistent use in this population remain low. OBJECTIVES: This study explores older adults' experiences with hearing aid use to better understand its perceived impact on the quality of life (QoL) and factors contributing to inconsistent use. METHOD: Adopting a phenomenological approach, semi-structured, in-person interviews were conducted with eight current hearing aid users, aged 67-84 years, presenting with varying degrees of hearing loss. Data were analysed using inductive thematic a

The efficiency of sensory systems in postural control of children with and without hearing or visual impairments.

Limited evidence exists on the efficiency of the sensory systems of children with sensory impairment. The purpose of this study was to examine the sensory systems involved in postural control of male children with hearing (HI) or visual impairments (VI) compared to those without HI or VI. Participants aged 9-13 years old (N = 45, Mage = 11.43, SD = 1.5) were placed within one of three equally stratified purposive groups (HI, VI, comparison children). Postural control was measured using a Kistler force plate (with stabilometric parameters: mean velocity in the anterior-posterior (AP) and medial

Efficacy of ossiculoplasty in patients with chronic otitis media with severe to profound hearing loss.

Chronic otitis media (COM) is treated medically and/or surgically. Ossiculoplasty for COM with severe-to-profound hearing loss has not been recommended because the severity of hearing loss before surgery is negatively associated with postoperative hearing improvement. Our study assessed the effectiveness of ossiculoplasty for severe-to-profound hearing loss and identified prognostic factors associated with favorable outcomes. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 182 patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss who underwent ossiculoplasty with tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy for

Associations between retinopathy of prematurity and the risks of hearing loss: A propensity matched analysis.

PURPOSE: While retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and hearing loss (HL) share many risk factors, whether patients with ROP have a higher risk of HL remains largely unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the association between ROP and the risk of having HL. METHODS: The electronic medical records contained in a United States national database were retrospectively reviewed. Patients younger than 18 years old with a record of receiving hearing screening were included. Eligible patients with a history of ROP were assigned to the ROP cohort, while those without ROP diagnosis after vision s

Role of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in alleviation of tinnitus in normal hearing subjects.

BACKGROUND: Subjective tinnitus is characterized by perception of sound in the absence of any external or internal acoustic stimuli. Many approaches have been developed over the years to treat tinnitus (medical and nonmedical). However, no consensus has been reached on the optimal therapeutic approach. Electrical nerve stimulation targeting peripheral auditory pathways presents a promising area of investigation for the treatment of tinnitus. Non-invasive transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation of the auricular branch of the vagus nerve has been introduced and studied but its success rate varies

The Speech Intelligibility Index: Tutorial and Applications for Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

PURPOSE: Speech audibility refers to how much access a listener has to the acoustic cues that comprise spoken communication. The Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) is a measure of speech audibility that has had increasing use in pediatric audiology to quantify auditory access with and without hearing aids. This tutorial focuses on clinical applications of the SII in children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). METHOD: We discuss the calculation of the SII and the current clinical tools that calculate aided and unaided SII. We describe practical uses of the SII throughout the steps of audi

A Longitudinal Assessment of Hearing Loss in the World Trade Center General Responder Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: In analyses without adjustment for World Trade Center (WTC) noise exposure, people with WTC and neighborhood exposures from the September 11, 2001, attacks have experienced slightly elevated risks of hearing loss. We investigated incident hearing loss in the WTC General Responder Cohort by their levels of WTC exposure, their WTC noise exposure and previous occupation. METHODS: Adjusted multivariable log binomial regression models assessed persistent (≥10 months) hearing loss associated with WTC exposures using 22 years of the monitoring visit data ( n = 45,537). RESULTS: Compared
