[Superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome: a case of Tullio phenomenon].

Superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is a clinical picture with sound and pressure-induced vertigo, autophony, hearing loss and a lowered bone conduction threshold. It is an important differential diagnosis to otosclerosis and patent eustachian tube. Diagnostic investigations include audiometric testing, nystagmus provocation, computed tomography and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials. Surgical repair of the dehiscence represents a curative therapeutic option. We describe the disease symptoms on the basis of a typical case.

[Genetically determinded deafness; 5 cases of Pendred's syndrome (author's transl)].

In our experience, Pendred's Syndrome is the most frequent one clinically seen of 124 syndromes with genetically determined deafness. It is defined as a triad: congenital perceptive hearing loss, goiter, and an abnormal perchlorate test. Inheritance is by an autosomal-recessive pattern. In 5 patients seen by us--one of whom had experienced multiple episodes of sudden deafness--the difficulty of diagnosis is shown. We also emphasize the need for genetic counselling in families with the known syndrome.

Sensorineural hearing level in unilateral otosclerosis.

Preoperative bone conduction threshold measurements were made in the otosclerotic and opposite ears of 25 patients with unilateral otosclerosis to tabulate the sensorineural hearing impairment in this disease. Middle ear otosclerosis was confirmed at surgery in all cases. The bone conduction thresholds at all frequencies measured were similar in the otosclerotic and opposite ears. Adequate masking was applied to the nontest ear to measure an accurate bone conduction threshold in the test ear without producing overmasking.

Superior canal dehiscence: review of a new condition.

A new cause of sound and pressure induced vertigo, superior canal dehisence, is described. Auditory manifestations include hyperacusis to bone-conducted sounds and conductive hearing loss with normal acoustic reflexes. The diagnosis is reached by a directed history, documentation of upward and torsional nystagmus evoked by sound and pressure, and radiology. Acoustic reflexes and VEMP (vestibular evoked myogenic potentials) aid in the identification of patients with an apparent conductive loss with normal acoustic reflexes or have an asymptomatic dehiscense on radiology. Treatment involves avoi

L-Ergothioneine slows the progression of age-related hearing loss in CBA/CaJ mice.

The naturally occurring amino acid, l-ergothioneine (EGT), has immense potential as a therapeutic, having shown promise in the treatment of other disease models, including neurological disorders. EGT is naturally uptaken into cells via its specific receptor, OCTN1, to be utilized by cells as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. In our current study, EGT was administered over a period of 6 months to 25-26-month-old CBA/CaJ mice as a possible treatment for age-related hearing loss (ARHL), since presbycusis has been linked to higher levels of cochlear oxidative stress, apoptosis, and chronic inf

Development and Initial Validation of the Lifetime Exposure to Noise and Solvents Questionnaire in U.S. Service Members and Veterans.

Purpose A need exists to investigate the short- and long-term impact of noise exposures during and following military service on auditory health. Currently available questionnaires are limited in their ability to meet this need because of (a) inability to evaluate noise exposures beyond a limited time frame, (b) lack of consensus on scoring, (c) inability to assess impulse exposures (e.g., firearm use), (d) lack of a single questionnaire that assesses both military and nonmilitary exposures, and (e) lack of validity and reliability data. To address these limitations, the Lifetime Exposure to N

Increased Monocyte Chemotactic Protein-1 Accompanying Pro-Inflammatory Processes are Associated with Progressive Hearing Impairment and Bilateral Disability of Meniere's Disease.

BACKGROUND: The progression of hearing impairment and the bilateral involvement of Meniere's disease (MD) may depend on the disease duration and aging. Recent studies reported that MD might involve dysfunction of the microvascular circulation damaged due to inflammatory changes. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine that the progress of the MD's hearing impairment and bilateral disability may be associated with the pathogenesis of several pro-inflammatory processes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recruited 30 unilateral MD patients (56.8 ± 14.7 years old), 7 bilateral MD patients (65.

Berbamine Analogs Exhibit Differential Protective Effects From Aminoglycoside-Induced Hair Cell Death.

Hearing loss is the third most common chronic health condition in the United States and largely results from damage to sensory hair cells. Major causes of hair cell damage include aging, noise exposure, and medications such as aminoglycoside antibiotics. Due to their potent antibacterial properties and low cost, aminoglycosides are often used for the treatment of gram-negative bacterial infections, surpassing expensive antibiotics with fewer harmful side effects. However, their use is coupled with permanent hearing loss in over 20% of patients requiring these life-sustaining antibiotics. There

Hyperinsulinemia/diabetes, hearing, and aging in the University of Wisconsin calorie restriction monkeys.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of hyperinsulinemia/Type 2 diabetes mellitus (HI-T2DM) on hearing impairment using rhesus monkeys to obtain control over diet and lifestyle factors that confound human studies. The study is a retrospective evaluation of rhesus monkeys from the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) study on caloric restriction and aging. The research questions were the following: 1. Is HI-T2DM related to hearing impairment? 2. If so, what is the site of lesion in the auditory system? and 3. What physiological factors affect the risk of hearing

Longitudinal threshold changes in older men with audiometric notches.

Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) is a multifactorial process that results chiefly from the accumulating effects of noise damage and aging on the cochlea. Noise damage is typically evidenced clinically by a discrete elevation (notch) of the auditory thresholds in the 3-6 kHz region of the audiogram whereas aging affects the highest frequencies first. To determine whether the presence of such high-frequency notches influences auditory aging, we examined the 15 year change in audiometric thresholds in 203 men from the Framingham Heart Study cohort. The mean age at the first hearing test was

Distinguishing Meniere's disease from vestibular migraine: A comprehensive review of symptoms and diagnostic insights.

Meniere's disease and vestibular migraine are common episodic vestibular syndromes whose overlapping vertigo, auditory, and migraine-associated features can complicate differential diagnosis. In this narrative review, we compared the diagnostic criteria, symptom patterns, pathophysiology, and complementary test findings of these syndromes. Vestibular migraine is diagnosed clinically based on recurrent vestibular symptoms, migraine history, temporal association with migraine features, and exclusion of alternative causes; audiological and vestibular evaluations are not required. In contrast, dia

Aberrant Internal Carotid Artery: A Rare Cause of Unfitness Revealed During Admission Audiometry.

INTRODUCTION: An aberrant tympanic segment of the internal carotid artery is a rare vascular anomaly. Clinical manifestations are variable and nonspecific, including hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, headache, and aural fullness. In military settings, it may remain undiagnosed, particularly when candidates are asymptomatic or do not report minor symptoms. This condition can render a candidate unfit for enlistment because of the risk of ear trauma during training or procedures. The French Armed Forces require comprehensive medical evaluations before enlistment, including audiometric testing and
