Three cases of histologically confirmed oropharyngeal malignant melanomas in dogs are presented including clinical examinations and cytogenetic analysis. Case one showed a hyperdiploid karyotype. Case two, a recurrent tumour, had a highly hypodiploid karyotype with supernumerary meta- and submetacentric chromosomes in all metaphases analysed. One hundred fifty histologically non-inflamed appendices from patients with acute appendicular pain were studied for mucosal and submucosal neurogenous hyperplasia using simple histochemical stain. Mucosal and submucosal neural hyperplasia was found in 69.34% of cases. The severity of submucosal hyperplasia was more compared to mucosal. Eleven patients with histologically proven fibrous dysplasia (biopsy) were imaged with 3-phase bone scanning, using 99mTc-MDP. Ten had monostotic and one had polyostotic fibrous dysplasia. The perfusion (phase I) and uptake (phase III) of monostotic lesions was compared to the normal contralateral side and the rest of the skeleton was inspected for other abnormalities. Lesions presented with slightly increased perfusion (1.65 normal +/- 0.907) and markedly increased uptake of tracer (6.0 normal +/- 2.58). Other features that were noted are high spinal and scapula and poor renal tracer uptake.

Cardiac necrosis was produced in rats by administering isoproterenol sulphate (85 mg/kg, sc for 4 days). The myocardial damage was proved by observing the elevated levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase, ++alanine aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase and the changes were confirmed by his topathology. In a cadaver-derived skeletal collection of 1,384 thoracolumbar spinal columns, 103 (7.4%) individuals with vertebral changes of Scheuermann's kyphosis were identified. Fourteen patients admitted to our clinic were found to have desquamative gingivitis. They were treated with doxycycline monohydrate, a semisynthetic tetracycline, for 6 to 8 weeks. Of the present series comprising 66 newborns with cleft lip, 13 (20%) had pigmented macules in the labial skin on the lateral side of the cleft. Histological examination using serial sections were performed on 47 cases and showed evidence of dermal melanocytosis in 40 cases (85%) consisting of 33 (70%) without clinically detectable macules and 7 (15%) with obvious pigmented macules. The fusiform cells in the dermis were positive for dopa reaction and anti-melanocyte antibody. The high incidence of dermal melanocytosis is comparable to that of common Mongolian spots in Asian babies.

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of the prostate is becoming increasingly accepted and used in the United States. This is a report of the experience of a nonacademic practice in which the aspirations were performed by a number of urologists, usually in the office, and were interpreted by a number of pathologists with varying degrees of experience in cytopathology. Of 187 patients, 159 had smears adequate for evaluation, and 99 had histologic/substantiating clinical follow-up for comparison. The clinical history, radiological investigations, pathologic findings and treatment of four patients affected by retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma were compared with data of the literature. These tumors have a great tendency to develop local recurrences after excision, but metastases to lymph nodes and distant organs usually occur lately. A case of porokeratosis punctata palmaris et plantaris (punctate porokeratosis) in a 60-year-old man of Korean ancestry is reported. The patient presented with a 15-year history of numerous asymptomatic pits measuring 1 to 3 mm in diameter and having keratotic plugs irregularly distributed on the plantar aspects of both feet and on the palmar aspects of both hands, including the flexor portions of the digits. Histologic examination revealed distinct epidermal depressions containing cornoid lamellae. Six previous case reports of this unusual dermatosis are reviewed and compared to our case.

The presence of tumour cells in the efferent vessels of the axillary nodes of breast cancer patients is termed efferent vascular invasion (EVI). The EVI status had been recorded in 112 cases which have now been followed for a mean of 120 +/- 8 months. At the start of the 10th year 17 per cent. of the EVI positives cases were alive, compared to 54 per cent. of the EVI negative. The EVI status has thus strong prognostic implications. It can be recorded in association with primary treatment on routine histological examination. No special equipment is required.

Patients with malignant melanoma who require a block dissection for clinically enlarged lymph nodes have a relatively good prognosis if only one node is involved histologically and the primary is on the lower limb. To explore the premise that the immature primate visual system responds differently to total unilateral occlusion (no competitive abnormal binocular interaction) than it does to lid suture, one eye in two infant Macaca mulatta was completely occluded with optically opaque material. After a recovery period of 2 months, single cell responses from the striate cortex were recorded, and the lateral geniculate nuclei were examined histologically. Th results show that cortical and geniculate changes are comparable in severity to those found in earlier studies after unilateral lid suture.
