Benjamin Waterhouse (1754-1846) and the riddle of Amos Babcock.

The late Dr Henry R Viets (1890-1969) suggested in 1940 that the author of A Journal of a Young Man of Massachusetts was Amos G Babcock. He also showed that Benjamin Waterhouse edited the manuscript. A similar journal, The Prisoner's Memoirs of Dartmoor Prison by Charles Andrews, is also described and contrasted. The career of Professor Waterhouse is narrated in relation to the medical politics at that time in New England: a possible explanation for Babcock's anonymous authorship is given.

What skeletons tell us. The story of human paleopathology.

Human skeletal paleopathology provides important insight regarding the antiquity of some diseases and their distribution in past human groups. The history of human skeletal paleopathology extends back more than 150 years. Rudolf Virchow published reports on the subject, and research on paleopathology has provided critical data on important topics such as the origin of syphilis. With the development of powerful new research tools, human paleopathology will continue to be a source of data on the development of disease and its effect on human biological and cultural development.

Thomas de Quincey and his restless legs symptoms as depicted in "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater".

Thomas de Quincey, a British writer of 19th century, suffered insomnia from the age of 17 years. In his famous "Confessions of an English-Opium Eater" (1822), he described a symptomatology that could concord with restless legs syndrome long before he became addicted to opium. In this report, we analyze his clinical description and the circumstances leading to his opium addiction.

[Galvanocautery in the 19th century otorhinolaryngology service].

The essence of galvanocautery, the such instruments as loops, cauteries and others are presented first of all. The achievements of such doctors as Albrecht Theodor Middeldorpf (1824-1868), Victor von Bruns (1812-1883), Friedrich Eduard Voltolini (1819-1889) and others in development of galvanocautery are depicted. The observations of such Polish physicians as Antoni Bryk (1820-1881), Jan Sedziak (1861-1932) and Zygmunt Srebrny (1860-1941) were very valuable. The good points and shortcomings of galvanocautery and principles of post-operational procedures are pointed out. The use of galvanocaute

The idiosyncratic aspects of the epilepsy of Fyodor Dostoevsky.

The goal of this article is to review the idiosyncratic aspects of the epilepsy of Fyodor Dostoevsky, one of the greatest writers of all time. The onset of his seizures is controversial, with some evidence pointing to his childhood and other reports that would place the onset in his teens or his twenties. His life in prison in Siberia and then in the Russian army is reviewed. His lifestyle included many factors that exacerbated his epilepsy, especially stress and sleep deprivation. His compulsion for gambling played an important role in producing great stress in his life, as he tried to revers

Surgical accountability in the 1880s: the death of Susan Nixon.

Susan Nixon died in 1881 following a surgical error. Her surgeon, Dr W. E. Warren, excised a normal 7-month gravid uterus under the misapprehension that he was removing a tubular pregnancy. It is believed that Mrs Nixon was the first woman in Australia to have an abdominal hysterectomy and the second to have a live Caesarean section. The surgical misadventure that resulted in Mrs Nixon's death became a public scandal, which gained currency through both parliamentary debate and the popular press. The purpose of referring to this case is to explore the mechanisms of accountability that surgeons

Carlos Finlay and yellow fever: triumph over adversity.

The eradication of yellow fever in Havana, Cuba, was achieved by a fruitful collaboration between American and Cuban physicians. Carlos Finlay, a Cuban physician who proposed the mosquito-vector theory in 1881, shared his ideas, his publications, and a sample of mosquito eggs with the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission. The commission, headed by MAJ Walter Reed, used human volunteers to confirm Finlay's theory. MAJ William Gorgas adopted mosquito-control measures in his sanitation program and, within 6 months, yellow fever was controlled in Havana for the first time. Finlay held fast to his ide

Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte: did he have seizures? Psychogenic or epileptic or both?

Napoleon Bonaparte was a general in the French army at 24 years of age, later conquering most of Europe. He was one of the greatest military geniuses the world has ever known, but also an extremely intelligent individual. Did he have seizures? The evidence shows that he had both psychogenic and epileptic attacks. The psychogenic attacks were likely related to the tremendous stress in his life, and the epileptic seizures were the result of chronic uremia from a severe urethral stricture caused by gonorrhea that was transmitted from his wife, Empress Josephine.

Restoring Phineas Gage: a 150th retrospective.

September 13 1998 marked the 150th anniversary of the accident to Phineas Gage, one of the most famous cases of survival after massive injury to the brain, and certainly the most famous case of personality change after brain damage. For this article a sample of the current literature about Gage was examined. It was found that although his case is mentioned in about 60% of introductory textbooks in psychology, there is a good deal of inaccuracy in what has been written about him. Similar inaccuracy was found in a smaller sampling of the psychiatric, medical, physiological, linguistic, and gener

'They might as well brand us': working-class resistance to compulsory vaccination in Victorian England.

From its origins in resistance to the 1853 Compulsory Vaccination Act, the Victorian anti-vaccination movement successfully challenged the public health policies of an increasingly interventionist state. Anti-vaccinationists were not only middle-class reformers, but were also drawn from a politically active working class. These campaigners saw compulsory vaccination as an extreme example of class legislation, for its policy and administration implicitly targeted working-class infants and inflicted multiple penalties on a public who considered themselves 'conscientious objectors'. Anti-vaccinat

[Health status and living conditions in medical district of Sandnes during the period 1866-1900].

The municipality of Sandnes became a separate medical district in 1866. The district physicians' reports give us an insight into health and living conditions in this district in the last half of the 19th century. This paper is based on a study of all statistical data and physicians' comments concerning the Sandnes district for the 1866-1900 period. The incidence of various diseases is estimated. Mental illness seems to have been more frequent in Sandness than in the rest of the county. In the physicians' reports, this was explained by the dominance of religious Puritanism in the district. The

Was Anna O.'s black snake hallucination a sleep paralysis nightmare? Dreams, memories, and trauma.

The final traumatic event recalled by Anna O. during her treatment with Josef Breuer was a terrifying hallucination she once had of a black snake attacking her ailing father. This event has been variously interpreted as indicating an underlying psychodynamic conflict, as a temporal lobe seizure, and as an hypnotic confabulation. We argue, however, that the hallucination--during which Anna O.'s arm was reportedly "asleep" due to nerve blockage--was probably a sleep paralysis nightmare. Sleep paralysis nightmares continue to be overlooked or misdiagnosed in clinical practice, and, in recent year
