Lymphoma is a heterogeneous malignancy and its incidence is increasing in the past decades all over the world. Although more than half of lymphoma patients achieve complete or partial remission from the standard first-line ABVD or R-CHOP based therapy, patients who fail to respond to these regimens will give rise to relapsed or refractory (R/R) lymphoma and may lead to a worse prognosis. Developing novel agents is important for R/R lymphoma. Based on the homing ability and being genetically modified easily, stem cells are usually used as vehicles in cell-based anti-tumor therapy, which can not

Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis, once a rare progressive neuropathy and/or cardiomyopathy, is now recognized with increasing worldwide frequency, various phenotypes, and over 130 gene mutations identified to date. This inherited disorder develops as a result of mutated transthyretin amyloid aggregation and systematic deposition throughout the body. With increasing knowledge about the pathophysiology of this disease, new disease-modifying therapies are being developed. In addition to slowing progression, these new agents were found to improve quality of life and reduce the severity of neur

An epidemic of acute respiratory syndrome in humans, which appeared in Wuhan, China in December 2019, was caused by a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). This disease was named as "Coronavirus Disease 2019" (COVID-19). SARS-CoV-2 was first identified as an etiological pathogen of COVID-19, belonging to the species of severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronaviruses (SARSr-CoV). The speed of both the geographical transmission and the sudden increase in numbers of cases is much faster than SARS and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). COVID-19 is the first global pandemic caused by a coro

Endogenous gaseous signaling molecules including nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) have been demonstrated to perform significant physiological and pharmacological functions and are associated with various diseases in biological systems. In order to obtain a deeper insight into their roles and mechanisms of action, it is desirable to develop novel techniques for effectively detecting gaseous signaling molecules. Small-molecule fluorescent probes have been proven to be a powerful approach for the detection and imaging of biological messengers by virtue of their n

Metal oxides with the hollow microstructure by the facile synthetic strategy are hopeful in applications for photocatalysis, supercapacitor, and gas sensor owing to their large surface areas, porosity ratio and rich active sites. In this work, indium oxide porous hollow rods (In2O3 PHRs) are successfully prepared using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the template. The morphology of In2O3 PHRs is hexagonal hollow micro-rods with a porous structure. The investigation on the gas-sensing performance reveals that the In2O3 PHRs sensor displays outstanding sensitivity and selectivity toward 10 pp

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), with high morbidity and mortality, seriously affect people's life and social development. Clinically, reperfusion therapy is typically used to treat ischemic cardiomyopathy, such as severe coronary heart disease and acute myocardial infarction. However, reperfusion therapy can lead to myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury (MIRI), which can affect the prognosis of patients. Studying the mechanisms of MIRI can help us improve the treatment of MIRI. The pathological process of MIRI involves many mechanisms such as ferroptosis and mitophagy. Ferroptosis can exacerba

The worldwide rapid increase in antibiotic resistance means that new therapeutic measures are urgently needed. Older antibiotics, such as colistin, fosfomycin, minocycline, mecillinam and temocillin, which had fallen from grace due to the development of more effective and less toxic drugs are now of renewed interest in the treatment of infections caused by multiresistant bacteria. Two new glycopeptides (oritavancin and dalbavancin) and a new oxazolidinone (tedizolid) are now registered for the treatment of acute skin and soft-tissue infections. In the treatment of infections caused by Gram-neg

Risk for or established malnutrition is frequent in older adults, accompanied by functional limitations, increased morbidity and mortality. Protein-energy malnutrition is often observed and leads besides other predisposing factors to sarcopenia, the increased loss of muscle mass with aging. Sarcopenia is an integral correlate of the physical component of the frailty syndrome. Even though sarcopenia often reaches levels where mobility, balance and functionality on overall are hampered, its diagnosis has not become part of the standard diagnostic and therapeutic repertoire of geriatric medicine.

INTRODUCTION: The microbiota is the set of millions of microorganisms that coexist in a symbiotic way in our body. It is mainly located in the digestive tract, being distributed in function of the chemical properties and the functions of the different organs. The factors that influence its composition are multiple (diet, individual habits, diseases or drugs). It also participates in several functions of the organism such as metabolism, immunity or even the function of the central nervous system.
DEVELOPMENT: This last interrelationship is called: gut-brain axis. For years the relationship bet

Dengue virus belongs to the Flaviviridae family which also includes viruses such as the Zika, West Nile and yellow fever virus. Dengue virus generally causes mild disease, however, more severe forms of the dengue virus infection, dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue haemorrhagic fever with shock syndrome (DSS) can also occur, resulting in multiple organ failure and even death, especially in children. The only dengue vaccine available in the market, CYD-TDV offers limited coverage for vaccinees from 9-45 years of age and is only recommended for individuals with prior dengue exposure. A nu

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders mainly affecting elderly people. It is characterized by progressive loss of memory and cognitive function. More than 95% of AD cases are related to sporadic or late-onset AD (LOAD). The etiology of LOAD is still unclear. It has been reported that environmental factors and epigenetic alterations play a significant role in AD pathogenesis. Furthermore, recently, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) identified 10 novel risk genes: ABCA7, APOE, BIN1, CD2AP, CD33, CLU, CR1, MS4A6A, MS4A4E, and PICALM, which play an imp

In the past decade, the introduction of high-resolution manometry and the classification of achalasia into subtypes has made possible to accurately diagnose the disease and predict the response to treatment for its different subtypes. However, even to date, in an era of exponential medical progress and increased insight in disease mechanisms, treatment of patients with achalasia is still rather simplistic and mostly confined to mechanical disruption of the lower esophageal sphincter by different means. In addition, there is partial consensus on what is the best form of available treatments for

Toward the end of his career, Dr. George Papanicolaou became interested in human endometrial explants placed into tissue culture. The initial focus of his studies was on phagocytic cells emanating from endometrial explants and their role in cleansing the uterine cavity after each menstrual cycle and in sterilizing the uterine cavity in the face of infection. Papanicolaou also observed that growth rates of explanted normal and pathologic endometrial tissues differed considerably. Explants of endometrial malignancies exhibited not only increased growth rates but also visible proliferation of cel

Familial aggregation in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been established for several decades, reflecting shared genetic and environmental susceptibility. A positive family history remains the strongest recognizable risk factor for the development of IBD and is reported in around 8-12% of IBD patients. Crohn's disease shows a more frequent familial pattern than ulcerative colitis. The risk of developing IBD in first-degree relatives of an affected proband is increased 4- to 8-fold. The risk for twins and children born from couples who both have IBD is also substantially higher; a cumulativ

Blood serum from immunized humans or animals (e.g., horses) contains relevant antibodies and has been used as serum therapy to treat many diseases or envenomation events. The effectiveness of blood serum was initially discovered in 1890 when Kitasato and von Behring observed the effectiveness of this type of therapy against diphtheria and tetanus. Serum therapies played an important role in the advancement of modern medicine prior to the development of penicillin and steroids. At present, several types of serum therapy remain in clinical use. However, some physicians have a limited understandi

Moyamoya disease is a chronic cerebrovascular disorder with progressive stenosis. We describe a four-yr-old female with features of moyamoya disease referred to our center for kidney transplant evaluation with ESRD secondary to presumed renal dysplasia along with concern for cerebral vascular anomalies. With her constellation of organ involvement, a genetic workup revealed a homozygous, frameshift mutation in the mitochondrial methionyl-tRNA formyltransferase gene. Given her vascular anomalies and evidence of prior infarcts seen on cerebral imaging, it was felt that her risk of future stroke e

The skeleton is unique from all other tissues in the body because of its ability to mineralize. The incorporation of mineral into bones and teeth is essential to give them strength and structure for body support and function. For years, researchers have wondered how mineralized tissues form and repair. A major focus in this context has been on the role of the extracellular matrix, which harbors key regulators of the mineralization process. In this introductory minireview, we will review some key concepts of matrix biology as it related to mineralized tissues. Concurrently, we will highlight th

The advent of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) has improved the prognosis and outcome of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) considerably. Compared with imatinib, the first-line use of second-generation inhibitors nilotinib and dasatinib has led to faster and deeper molecular remissions accompanied by a differential adverse effect profile. An essential part of the management of CML patients is the guideline-based application of cytogenetics and standardized polymerase chain reaction techniques to regularly assess the remission status. Long-lasting treatment-free remission in a min
