Stroke is a serious health problem and is chiefly a disorder of the elderly population. Several modifiable and non modifiable risk factors have been studied. The association of sleep disorders and stroke is exciting. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) which is now considered a systemic disease significantly increases the risk of stroke and death from any cause and the increase is independent of other risk factors including hypertension. There is high prevalence of OSA in the elderly. OSA affects the cerebral hemodynamics adversely. There appears to be a bi-directional relation between sleep disorde

Rodents exposed to intermittent hypoxia (IH), a model of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), manifest impaired learning and memory and somnolence. Increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative tissue damage, and apoptotic neuronal cell death are associated with the presence of IH-induced CNS dysfunction. Furthermore, treatment with antioxidants or overexpression of antioxidant enzymes is neuroprotective during IH. These findings mimic clinical cases of OSA and suggest that ROS may play a key causal role in OSA-induced neuropathology. Controlled production of ROS occurs in multiple su

We studied the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) and mRNA stability factor HuR in 40 supratentorial meningiomas using RT-PCR, ELISA and immunohistochemistry, and analyzed their associations with the clinicopathological characteristics, including microvascular density (MVD), peritumoral brain edema (PTBE), histological subtypes and grades, and the performance of preoperative arterial embolization. Furthermore, we investigated the involvement of HuR in the upregulation of VEGF-A expression using primary meningioma cell cultures. The level of VEGF-A is elevated in mening

Background. Symptoms of mountain sickness are due to hypoxia of the brain. The pathogenesis is complex, but acid-base disturbances certainly play a role. When arterial oxygen levels drop, hyperventilation is induced, resulting in a respiratory alkalosis. However, this alkalosis inhibits the hyperventilation necessary for maintaining oxygen pressure. We present a case of a patient with symptoms of mountain sickness at relatively low altitudes, who appeared to have Conn's syndrome (primary hyperaldosteronism). Case. A 61-year-old male with hypokalaemic hypertension presented with symptoms of mou

Schizophrenia and mania have a number of symptoms and epidemiological characteristics in common, and both respond to dopamine blockade. Family, twin and molecular genetic studies suggest that the reason for these similarities may be that the two conditions share certain susceptibility genes. On the other hand, individuals with schizophrenia have more obvious brain structural and neuropsychological abnormalities than those with bipolar disorder; and pre-schizophrenic children are characterised by cognitive and neuromotor impairments, which are not shared by children who later develop bipolar di

This article focuses on neuropsychological functioning at moderate, high, and extreme altitude. This article summarizes the available literature on respiratory, circulatory, and brain determinants on adaptation to hypoxia that are hypothesized to be responsible for neuropsychological impairment due to altitude. Effects on sleep are also described. At central level, periventricular focal damages (leuko-araiosis) and cortical atrophy have been observed. Frontal lobe and middle temporal lobe alterations are also presumed. A review is provided regarding the effects on psychomotor performance, perc

INTRODUCTION: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is the neurological consequence of a nonprogressive encephalopathic clinical picture of the hypoxic-ischemic syndrome, caused by a mixture of reduced oxygenation of the blood with increased carbon dioxide (asphyxia) and a lack of tissue perfusion (ischemia). It is the chief cause of death during the perinatal period, and of nonprogressive neurological deficits in childhood.
DEVELOPMENT AND CONCLUSIONS: Regarding neurophysiological factors, we emphasise the importance of re-perfusion and reoxygenation in hypoxia-ischemia, with increased oxidative s

Infants with repeated apnoea during sleep have received great attention for the assumed reason of being at-risk for sudden infant death. The present paper reports findings which indicate a different risk, namely for neurological impairment during infancy due to repeated hypoxia. A very strong correlation exists between the respiratory measurements based on a polygraphic all-night recording (PtcO2 drops and apnoea incidence and duration) and the impairment of the spontaneous movement repertoire in 114 infants, aged between 3 and 26 weeks. All infants have been video recorded at the same day as

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Peritumoral brain edema (PBE) is common in intracranial meningiomas (IM) and has been linked to postoperative morbidity, yet its impact on cortical oxygenation remains unclear. We investigated the association between PBE and local tissue oxygenation using intraoperative in vivo hyperspectral imaging (HSI).
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients undergoing microsurgical IM resection with intraoperative HSI were prospectively analyzed. Peritumoral cortical oxygen saturation (StO2) was quantified and correlated with preoperative MRI parameters, including edema volume and contra

Background/Aims: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by hyperglycemia and is a risk factor for stroke. Our previous studies demonstrated that adipocyte-derived exosomes (Ad-EXs) mediate adipose-brain communication. This study investigated the effects of hyperglycemic subcutaneous and visceral Ad-EXs on brain microvascular endothelial cell (BMEC) dysfunction during ischemic injury. Hypothesis: Hyperglycemic Ad-EXs exacerbate stroke injury via inducing oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in BMECs. Methods: EXs were isolated from primary human subcutaneous and visceral adipocytes

Brain maturity and many clinical treatments such as therapeutic hypothermia (TH) can significantly influence the morphology of neonatal EEG seizures after hypoxia-ischemia (HI), and so there is a need for generalized automatic seizure identification. This study validates efficacy of advanced deep-learning pattern classifiers based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) for seizure detection after HI in fetal sheep and determines the effects of maturation and brain cooling on their accuracy. The cohorts included HI-normothermia term (n = 7), HI-hypothermia term (n = 14), sham-normothermia term

Various calcium channels are involved in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury. Cav3.2 channel is a main subtype of T-type calcium channels. T-type calcium channel blockers, such as pimozide and mibefradil, have been shown to prevent cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury-induced brain injury. However, the role of Cav3.2 channels in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury remains unclear. Here, in vitro and in vivo mode

Birth asphyxia is a frequent cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality with limited therapeutic options. We show that a single mesenchymal stem cell treatment at 3 d (MSC-3) after neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in postnatal day 9 mice improved sensorimotor function and reduced lesion size. A second MSC treatment at 10 d after HI (MSC-3+10) further enhanced sensorimotor improvement and recovery of MAP2 and MBP (myelin basic protein) staining. Ipsilateral anterograde corticospinal tract tracing with biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) showed that HI reduced BDA labeling of the contralateral spinal

2,3-Benzodiazepines represent a family of specific, noncompetitive AMPA receptor antagonists with anticonvulsant and neuroprotective properties. In this study, the antiexcitotoxic potency of the clinical antiepileptic drug candidate, talampanel (4 x 2 mg/kg), and that of two related 2,3-benzodiazepines, 5-(4-aminophenyl)-8-methyl-9H-1,3-dioxolo[4,5-h][2,3]-benzodiazepine (GYKI 52466) (4 x 10 mg/kg) and GYKI 53784 (4 x 2 mg/kg), was investigated in 7-day-old rats. The AMPA antagonists were applied in four consecutive i.p. injections at 1-h intervals, the first dosage was given shortly after the

BACKGROUND: Infant brain injury from hypoxia-ischemia (HI) can lead to life-long impairment, but protective strategies are lacking. Short-term but not long-term protection has been demonstrated in the Rice-Vannucci neonatal brain ischemia model (RVM) by volatile anesthetic administration before HI, while exposure during HI has not been tested. In the current study, we evaluated a combination of sevoflurane and mild hypothermia as a protective approach during HI, both short- and long-term, by introducing intubation and mechanical ventilation to the RVM.
METHODS: The right common carotid artery

Hyperoxia is used for hypoxia/ischemia-related conditions, but is associated with poorer clinical outcomes, potentially related to reductions in cerebral blood flow (CBF). Global CBF hyperoxia responses are variable; limited evidence suggests heightened sensitivity in anterior brain regions, leaving important gaps in understanding spatial resolution. Using 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we tested the hypotheses that 1) isocapnic hyperoxia would reduce CBF at the whole brain, gray matter (GM), and white matter (WM), and 2) this reduction would differ across all lobes. CBF was quantif

PURPOSE: After traumatic brain injury (TBI), ischemia and hypoxia of brain tissue, glucose undergoes anaerobic fermentation, leading to a large accumulation of lactic acid. Our aim was to explore the role of lactate metabolism in brain cells after TBI.
METHOD: In scRNA-seq dataset, 10-week-old male C57BL/6 J mice were randomized to undergo mild fluid percussion injury or sham surgery, and we analyzed frontal cortex tissue during the acute (24 h) and subacute (7 days) phases of TBI at single-cell resolution. Cell cycle phases were evaluated, and principal component analysis was performed. Cell
