Subtraction imaging: applications for nonvascular abdominal MRI.

OBJECTIVE: In this article we will illustrate the role of subtraction imaging for abdominal MRI applications. CONCLUSION: Subtraction imaging has multiple applications for imaging the mediastinum, abdomen, and pelvis. Removing any preexisting signal of T1 unenhanced images causes contrast enhancement within a mass to become more conspicuous on subtracted sequences. This is helpful when evaluating a lesion with high signal on unenhanced T1-weighted sequences, where visual detection of enhancement can be difficult on conventional MRI.

Reduced iodinated contrast media for abdominal imaging by dual-layer spectral detector computed tomography for patients with kidney disease.

Contrast-enhanced computed tomography using iodinated contrast media is useful for diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases. However, contrast-induced nephropathy remains problematic for kidney diseases patients. Although current guidelines recommended the use of a minimal dose of contrast media necessary to obtain adequate images for diagnosis, obtaining adequate images with sufficient contrast enhancement is difficult with conventional computed tomography using reduced contrast media. Dual-layer spectral detector computed tomography enables the simultaneous acquisition of low- and high-energy

Important Role of Ultrasound in Assessing Tubulocystic Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Tubulocystic renal cell carcinoma is a rare renal neoplasm with imaging characteristics that may make it challenging to differentiate from benign cystic lesions. This retrospective single-institution study characterized the multimodality imaging features of pathologically confirmed tubulocystic renal cell carcinoma with emphasis on ultrasound (US) findings. Cases identified between 2016 and 2023 were reviewed for demographic, clinical, and imaging features on computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and US. Seven patients (6 male, 1 female; mean age 61 ± 8 y) were included,

Juxta-articular hemangioma of long bone.

We report on a rare case of an intraosseous hemangioma involving the proximal tibia in a 70-year-old man. Radiographically, the lesion was a well-defined osteolytic lesion with marginal sclerosis. The CT images demonstrated a well-defined osteolytic lesion with partial cortical breakthrough. T1-weighted MR images showed a hypointense lesion, while T2-weighted images revealed hyperintense areas, with internal, hypointense septa. Gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted images showed lattice-like enhancement of the lesion.

Prognostic value of magnetic resonance imaging in the management of fistula-in-ano.

PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance imaging of fistula-in-ano has been shown to predict surgical anatomy accurately and identify complex features. In addition, fistula complexity has been correlated with poor outcome after surgical intervention. We investigated whether preoperative magnetic resonance imaging could predict clinical outcome after surgery for fistulous disease better than clinical examination under anesthetic. METHODS: Seventy patients with clinically suspected fistula-in-ano underwent preoperative dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging before surgical exploration. Outcome

Blood-pool MR contrast material for detection and characterization of focal hepatic lesions: initial clinical experience with ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (AMI-227).

OBJECTIVE: AMI-227 is an ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide colloid known to enhance tissue T1 and T2 relaxation rates. Animal studies show that AMI-227 has an estimated blood half-life of more than 200 min. In this study, we evaluated the clinical utility of AMI-227 as an MR contrast agent for detection and characterization of focal hepatic lesions, with MR imaging done while the contrast agent is in the intravascular space (blood-pool phase). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-two patients with known or suspected focal hepatic masses underwent T1- and T2-weighted MR imaging of the liver at 1

Utility of contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in penile trauma.

Penile traumatic injuries are rare with potentially severe consequences, with clinical assessment challenging due to pain and swelling. Ultrasound is the primary imaging modality for assessing the penis. It has a high spatial resolution and rapid availability and is portable. Contrast enhanced ultrasound is an advanced ultrasound technique that adds real-time dynamic vascular imaging safely, increasing diagnostic precision and confidence, allowing for better therapeutic management of traumatic penile injuries. Contrast enhanced ultrasound helps to delineate the extent of a haematoma, distingui

Effect of pre-stroke statin use on the progression of intracranial atherosclerosis in ischemic stroke patients: Evidence from high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging.

High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) has emerged as a valuable tool for evaluating intracranial atherosclerotic plaque characteristics in vivo. This study aimed to identify clinical and imaging predictors of plaque enhancement (PE) on HR-MRI in patients presenting with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA). We retrospectively included consecutive patients diagnosed with AIS or TIA who underwent HR-MRI between January 2021 and August 2022. Participants were categorized according to the presence or absence of contrast enhancement in culprit plaques and fur

Accuracy evaluation of an automatic landmarking method based on 3D segmented CT scans of full lower limbs with knee osteoarthritis.

In preoperative planning, a number of techniques for registration of anatomical landmarks on bones, or "bones landmarking", have been developed for automatic measurement of lower limbs. However, the evaluation of these techniques is often neglected, reducing confidence in results and limiting clinical applications. We propose a protocol to evaluate landmarking techniques applied to thirty 3D images of osteoarthritic lower limbs. The protocol includes the evaluation of the ground truth based on manual landmarking performed by two experienced clinicians. Intra- and inter-operator variability wer

Harnessing X-Ray Energy-Dependent Attenuation of Bismuth-Based Nanoprobes for Accurate Diagnosis of Liver Fibrosis.

Timely detection of liver fibrosis by X-ray computed tomography (CT) can prevent its progression to fatal liver diseases. However, it remains quite challenging because conventional CT can only identify the difference in density instead of X-ray attenuation characteristics. Spectral CT can generate monochromatic imaging to specify X-ray attenuation characteristics of the scanned matter. Herein, an X-ray energy-dependent attenuation strategy originated from bismuth (Bi)-based nanoprobes (BiF3 @PDA@HA) is proposed for the accurate diagnosis of liver fibrosis. Bi element in BiF3 @PDA@HA can exhibi

CT angiography versus 3D rotational angiography in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: CT angiography (CTA) is increasingly used as primary diagnostic tool to replace digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). However, 3D rotational angiography (3DRA) has substituted DSA as a reference standard. In this prospective observational study, we compare CTA with 3DRA of all cerebral vessels in a large cohort of patients with SAH. METHODS: Of 179 consecutive patients with SAH admitted between March 2013 and July 2014, 139 underwent 64- to 256-detector row CTA followed by complete cerebral 3DRA within 24 h. In 86 patients (62 %),

Cortical shell unwrapping for vertebral body abnormality detection on computed tomography.

The vertebral body is the main axial load-bearing structure of the spinal vertebra. Assessment of acute injury and chronic deformity of the vertebral body is difficult to assess accurately and quantitatively by simple visual inspection. We propose a cortical shell unwrapping method to examine the vertebral body for injury such as fractures and degenerative osteophytes. The spine is first segmented and partitioned into vertebrae. Then the cortical shell of the vertebral body is extracted using deformable dual-surface models. The cortical shell is then unwrapped onto a 2D map and the complex 3D

Virtual hysterosalpingography: experience with over 1000 consecutive patients.

With the advent of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), a whole new spectrum of diagnostic imaging techniques and procedures appears. Virtual hysterosalpingography (VHSG) is a novel non-invasive modality for assessing the uterus and female reproductive system that combines hysterosalpingography technique with MDCT technologies. Nowadays, 64-row VHSG offers an excellent diagnostic performance, in concordance with the development of new reproductive interventions and the need of accurate diagnostic procedures. In this article, we review the VHSG technique and describe normal and pathologic
