Image-guided sinus surgery.

Image-guided surgery (IGS) is extremely useful for anatomic location in at-risk sinus surgery: extensive inflammatory disease, sinus cavity revision, and frontal sinus, posterior ethmoid, sphenoid or nasosinal tumor surgery. There are two systems on the market, based on electromagnetic and infrared detection, respectively; optimal functioning depends on calibration. IGS is only a location aid, complementary to and not a substitute for endoscopy. It enables the experienced endonasal surgeon to check the endoscopic location at any time, and provides appreciable "psychological" comfort in what ar

The impact of computer-assisted auscultation on physician referrals of asymptomatic patients with heart murmurs.

BACKGROUND: As many as 50-70% of asymptomatic children referred for specialist evaluation or echocardiography because of a murmur have no heart disease. HYPOTHESIS: Computer-assisted auscultation (CAA) can improve the sensitivity and specificity of referrals for evaluation of heart murmurs. METHODS: Seven board-certified primary care physicians were evaluated both without and with use of a computer-based decision-support system using 100 prerecorded patient heart sounds (55 innocent murmurs, 30 pathological murmurs, 15 without murmur). The sensitivity and specificity of their murmur referral

Multimodality imaging of tracheobronchial disorders in children.

The trachea and bronchial airways in children are subject to compromise by a number of extrinsic and intrinsic conditions, including congenital, inflammatory, infectious, traumatic, and neoplastic processes. Stridor, wheezing, and respiratory distress are the most common indications for imaging of the airway in children. Frontal and lateral chest and/or neck radiography constitute the initial investigations of choice in most cases. Options for additional imaging include airway fluoroscopy, contrast esophagography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Advanced imaging

Improved synthetic CT image quality does not guarantee dosimetric agreement in CBCT-based adaptive proton radiotherapy.

Objective.Synthetic CT (sCT) generation from cone-beam CT (CBCT) has emerged as a promising enabler for adaptive radiotherapy. While deep learning (DL) methods have demonstrated substantial improvements in image quality, their impact on proton beam therapy (PBT) dose calculation remains unclear, particularly for CBCT acquired on proton gantries, which are prone to increased artifacts and noise.Approach.In this study, we evaluated sCT generation from proton gantry CBCT using a denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) and a cycle-consistent generative adversarial network, and compared them

Biomechanical modeling of radiation dose-induced volumetric changes of the parotid glands for deformable image registration.

PURPOSE: Early animal studies suggest that parotid gland (PG) toxicity prediction could be improved by an accurate estimation of the radiation dose to sub-regions of the PG. Translation to clinical investigation requires voxel-level dose accumulation in this organ that responds volumetrically throughout treatment. To date, deformable image registration (DIR) has been evaluated for the PG using only surface alignment. We sought to develop and evaluate an advanced DIR technique capable of modeling these complex PG volume changes over the course of radiation therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Plann

Assessment of Head Shape by Craniofacial Teams: Structuring Practice Parameters to Optimize Efficiency.

INTRODUCTION: Since the initiation of the "Back to Sleep Campaign" by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1992, the incidence of referrals for positional plagiocephaly has increased by 600%. Although patients with positional plagiocephaly rarely require operative intervention, they often do require treatment with cranial molding helmets or positioning changes. The increased volume of patients makes the task of separating cases of craniosynostosis from positional head shape problems more difficult. The authors sought to determine how providers are handling this increased workload of head shap

EffAtt-LungNet: An attention-guided EfficientNet framework for three-class lung histopathology classification.

This study presents EffAtt-LungNet, an attention-guided deep learning framework for three-class lung histopathology classification. The model combines an EfficientNetB3 backbone with the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) to refine features and improve discrimination among benign lung tissue, lung adenocarcinoma, and lung squamous cell carcinoma. Experiments used the publicly released LC25000 lung subset, which contains 15,000 images across three classes and was itself produced by augmenting a smaller collection of underlying histopathology images. We generated 10,500 additional fixed

Feasibility of Depth-in-Color En Face Optical Coherence Tomography for Colorectal Polyp Classification Using Ensemble Learning and Score-Level Fusion.

In colorectal cancer screening, accurate detection of precursor lesions is challenging due to their ambiguous surface appearance. Depth-sensitive optical coherence tomography (OCT) with deep learning may improve accuracy. OCT imaging was performed on polyps from 300 subjects. Depth was encoded (surface, mid, deep) in color to generate en face OCT projections. En face projections were then annotated. The projections were then used to train an ensemble network based on the malignant potential of polyps. The area under the curve (AUC) for detecting malignant potential of all polyps was 0.90, and

Enhancing automatic landmark localization in X-ray images using combined segmentation and regression models: application to lower limb alignment assessment.

Manual landmark detection in lower limb medical imaging is time-consuming and error-prone. Recently, authors have proposed automatic landmark detection methods based on image segmentation, coordinate regression, or a combination of both to aid clinicians. While the latter approach shows promising results, detailed optimization of its design choices, including the integration strategy and hyperparameter tuning, remains unexplored. This study investigates the optimal approach to combining image segmentation and coordinate regression, focusing on selecting suitable network architectures and optim

Deepfakebuster: a confidence-calibrated adaptive ensemble framework for robust Deepfake image detection.

Advances in the realism of synthetic media created with generative adversarial networks (GANs), diffusion models, and face manipulation tools has created an increased demand for well-established deepfake detection systems that can detect many different types of manipulation artifacts. However, most single model deepfake detectors are not very robust because they rely on specific forensic cues and do not adapt well to shifts in how synthesis occurs. We present DeepFakeBuster as a confidence-calibrated adaptive ensemble for deepfake image detection by fusing together heterogeneous deep learning

Impact of image processing techniques on deep learning-based classification accuracy of cervical vertebral maturation.

OBJECTIVES: This research aimed to investigate how different image processing techniques influence the performance of a deep learning model in classifying cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) stages. METHODS: A dataset of 799 cephalometric radiographs, originally obtained for orthodontic diagnosis, was analyzed. For each image, a rectangular section including the second to fourth cervical vertebrae (C2-C4) was extracted and used as the standard image. A version with low signal intensity was created and termed the "low-density image." Additionally, images were labeled by filling the internal ar

A two-stage approach for segmenting spatial point patterns applied to multiplex imaging.

Recent advances in multiplex imaging have enabled researchers to locate different types of cells within a tissue sample. This is especially relevant for tumor immunology, as clinical regimes corresponding to different stages of disease or responses to treatment may manifest as different spatial arrangements of tumor and immune cells. Spatial point pattern modeling can be used to partition multiplex tissue images according to these regimes. To this end, we propose a two-stage approach: first, local intensities and pair correlation functions are estimated from the spatial point pattern of cells

Improved method for optical coherence tomography angiography: from reconstruction to clinical indicator quantification.

SIGNIFICANCE: Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) represents a significant advance in noninvasive ophthalmic vascular imaging, yet existing reconstruction algorithms face challenges such as spectral leakage and motion artifacts, which can compromise image quality and the accuracy of subsequent clinical quantification. Improving OCTA reconstruction and developing robust, automated methods for clinical indicator extraction are crucial for enhancing diagnostic reliability and facilitating precise disease monitoring. AIM: We aim to propose and validate an improved OCTA reconstruction
