Atmospheric H2O2 measurement: comparison of cold trap method with impinger bubbling method.

Collection of atmospheric H2O2 was performed by a cold trap method using dry ice-acetone as the refrigerant. The air was drawn by a pump into a glass gas trap immersed in the dry ice-acetone slush in a dewar flask at a flow rate of 2.5 l min-1 for approximately 2 h. Collection efficiency was > 99% and negligible interferences by O3, SO2 or organic matter with the collected H2O2 in the trap were observed. This method was compared with the air impinger bubbling method which has been previously described (Kok et al., 1978a, b, Envir. Sci. Technol. 12, 1072-1080). The measured total peroxide (H2O2

Principles and application of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.

The physics, instrumentation, and patient-care aspects of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in the treatment of kidney stone disease are described. The kidney stone is located through the use of two integrated roentgenographic imaging systems. The x-ray tubes, fixed on either side of a tub of water in which the patient is partially immersed, are directed upward. The patient is maneuvered until the imaging systems indicate the kidney stone is within the second focus of the reflector and within the 1.5-cu cm target area. Once within this alignment, the stone is ready for shock wave tr

Pressure effects on the distribution of extracellular materials in the rhesus monkey outflow apparatus.

An electron-microscopic investigation was conducted to determine the distribution of extracellular materials in the rhesus monkey outflow apparatus at various maintained levels of intraocular pressure. Intraocular pressure was maintained at either 0,8, 15, 22, 30, or 50 mm Hg, by an intracameral needle attached to a reservoir system for a period of 1 h. Thereafter the eyes were fixed either by intracameral perfusion of glutaraldehyde at the appropriate pressure level, or by carotid perfusion of the fixative, or by rapid enucleation and immersion fixation. The electron-dense cationic stains, co

Incorporating Torsion Into 3D Geometric Reconstruction of Left-Ventricle From 2D Echocardiography and Its Impact on Hemodynamics.

In addition to systolic contraction and diastolic relaxation, torsional motion is an essential component of left ventricle (LV) wall motion, but its effect on LV hemodynamics is not fully understood. To this end, the measured rotation of short-axis sections is incorporated into our 3D reconstruction of LV from 2D echocardiography, which serves as input to the curvilinear immersed boundary framework for LV flow simulations. The geometry is validated against sonomicrometry measurements, whose difference is found to be within the typical myocardium thickness range, and the flow is validated again

Wearable Electro-Thermal Haptic Stimulator Driven by a Self-Powered Tactile Sensor for Realistic Stimulus Replication.

Reproducing realistic tactile sensations is critical for intuitive and immersive human-machine interaction in bio-mechatronic systems. Here, we present a stimulus-replicating system that translates real-world tactile events into biomimetic sensations. The system couples a self-powered, multimodal tactile sensor-detecting dynamic/static pressure and temperature via hybrid triboelectric and ionic mechanisms-with a wearable stimulator. The stimulator features a co-located Peltier-based thermotactile module and a concentric poly(2,3-diydrothieno-1,4-dioxin)-poly(styrenesulfonate)/polyurethane elec

Mapping the Intellectual Landscape of Maladaptive Daydreaming Research: A Bibliometric Analysis of Web of Science-Indexed Publications (2009-2025).

Empirical research on maladaptive daydreaming (MD), a clinically impairing form of compulsive immersive fantasy associated with attention dysregulation, emotional dysregulation and digital behavioural addictions, has expanded substantially over the past decade. Despite this growth, the intellectual structure, thematic evolution and collaborative networks of the MD literature indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) remain unmapped. This bibliometric study aimed to characterise the intellectual landscape of WoSCC-indexed MD research between 2009 and 2025. A total of 141 publication

Depletion forces from interacting crowders.

Macromolecular crowding is an organizing principle in soft matter and biological systems where high concentrations of macromolecules generate depletion forces that drive collective processes such as compaction, self-assembly, and phase separation. While the classical Asakura-Oosawa (AO) theory has been widely used to describe depletion interactions, it neglects crowder-crowder interactions and is unable to account for enhanced depletion observed in systems with attractive crowders. Here, we investigate the depletion potential of colloids immersed in Lennard-Jones crowders, which at modest crow

Audible Focal Spot Generation via a Metasurface-Enabled Parametric Array Loudspeaker.

Parametric array loudspeakers (PALs) produce highly directional sound beams but are constrained by poor low-frequency performance and unwanted low-path attenuation. Existing beam focusing engineering alleviates these limitations but relies on active phased arrays, which are costly and requires complex hardware for practical applications. Here, we present a passive acoustic metasurface (AMS) lens that enables broadband focusing of the audible beam generated by an ordinary PAL. The AMS is constructed from Fabry-Pérot-based annular unit cells, whose width is smaller than the carrier ultrasound wa

Common and distinct neurofunctional signatures of dynamic naturalistic emotion regulation strategies.

Adaptive emotion regulation is essential for mental health. Reappraisal and acceptance are effective yet cognitively distinct emotion regulation strategies. A key unanswered question is whether their neural implementations are supported by common overarching or distinct neurofunctional processes, especially under dynamic, naturalistic conditions that mirror real-life scenarios. Here, we combined naturalistic fMRI with multivariate predictive modeling to develop neurofunctional signatures that accurately and comprehensively characterize negative affect and its regulation via acceptance and reap

Training Community-Academic Teams to Use Low-Cost Air Monitors: A Mixed Method Evaluation of the RISE Communities Program.

Concerns regarding poor air quality in communities experiencing disproportionately high levels of air pollution frequently motivate formation of community-academic partnerships. Low-cost air monitors can assess air pollution but require specific training. The RISE Communities program was created to support partnerships in air quality training and community-engaged research. The RISE Communities program in-person training took place in Cincinnati, OH, in summers 2023 and 2024. The training included hands-on workshops, lectures, and monthly webinars with continued expert guidance for one year fo

How semantic context and temporal dynamics affect egocentric and allocentric spatial representations.

Pouring water from a bottle into a glass requires representing their relative spatial positions (spatial information) and knowing that such objects are found together, or one by one (temporal dynamics), in typical contexts, such as a kitchen (semantic information). While spatial information is encoded using egocentric (body-centered) or allocentric (object-centered) reference frames, semantic knowledge is organized in context frames, which help predict object-context associations. This study investigates whether daily-like semantic contexts and temporal dynamics affect egocentric and allocentri

Diving Into Epipolar Transformers for Light Field Super-Resolution and Disparity Estimation.

Light field (LF) cameras capture the light rays of a 3D scene from multiple views simultaneously, and thus provide a more immersive experience of the real world as compared to traditional cameras. Although significant progress has been made in various LF image processing tasks, it remains challenging to effectively model the non-local spatial-angular correlations inherent in LF images, particularly when dealing with complex disparity variations. In this paper, we focus on orthogonal epipolar geometry of LF images and propose a generic Epipolar Transformer mechanism that incorporates geometrica

Comprehensive analysis of open and isolated confined electrolyte systems.

In this paper, various aspects of the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation, focusing on the roles of structural confinement and ionic conservation have been addressed. Specifically, this paper provides an analytical and well-behaved solution of the PB equation in finite and infinite structures for open and isolated electrolytic environments. A structure-dependent Debye length for confined systems and a generalized Debye length appropriate for isolated electrolytes are introduced. For an isolated symmetric (1:1) electrolyte, a generalized PB equation has been derived. In the literature, the solution

Red Blood Cell Positional History, Sphericity, and Network Architecture Influence Lingering and Partitioning.

The transport and distribution of red blood cells (RBCs) through microvascular networks is central to diverse applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and the study of pathological mechanisms. Recent findings highlight two critical phenomena: (i) a history-dependent partitioning effect, wherein the RBC partitioning at each bifurcation is influenced by the positional and configurational state inherited from previous bifurcations and (ii) RBC lingering at the bifurcation apex, which strongly affects downstream flow distribution. However, the interplay between network geometry, RBC sphe

Ecological validity of a Norwegian version of the Awareness of Social Inference Test.

The ecological validity of the Norwegian version of The Awareness of Social Inference Test (N-TASIT), a test of social cognition, was explored in individuals with (n = 101) and without (n = 50) traumatic brain injury (TBI). Linear regression analyses revealed that for participants with moderate to severe TBI, N-TASIT performance was associated with proxy-reported (R2 = 0.05, F(1, 60) = 4.21, p = 0.045), but not self-reported, social skills assessed with the Social Skills after TBI Questionnaire. Adding demographic and cognitive variables to the regressions did not increase explanatory power. W

Spider-Silk-Inspired Hierarchical Nanofiber Architectures Enabling Environmentally Robust Multifunctional Sensing for Eye-Fatigue Monitoring and Bioprotection.

Electrooculography (EOG) offers a direct electrophysiological window for objective fatigue assessment under prolonged visual load. However, skin-mounted EOG sensors face an inherent trade-off between maintaining signal stability and ensuring long-term wearability and skin comfort. Herein, inspired by spider-silk architectures, we report an environmentally robust, multifunctional EOG-fusion sensor based on a hierarchically engineered, cavity-structured bioelectrode that integrates an uncarbonized PAN@MXene-ZIF spacer with a carbonized conductive core. This state-engineered architecture enables

Pancreatic Lipase in Eutectogels as Emerging Materials: Exploring Their Properties and Potential Applications in Biosensing.

Eutectogels are advanced gel-based systems that integrate deep eutectic solvents (DES) into polymer networks. In this study, we report the first detailed characterization of an enzyme-containing eutectogel, representing a significant step toward advanced biosensing and biocatalytic applications. Specifically, we have incorporated pancreatic lipase, one of the main target enzymes in the treatment of obesity, in eutectogels via UV-induced radical polymerization of suitable precursors in appropriate DESs. Prior to immobilization, the enzyme was solubilized in selected DESs and its activity and co

ADAPT-3D: Accelerated Deep Adaptable Processing of Tissue for 3-Dimensional Fluorescence Tissue Imaging for Research and Clinical Settings.

Light sheet microscopy and preparative clearing methods that improve light penetration in 3D tissues have revolutionized imaging in biomedical research. While most clearing methods focus on removing molecules that scatter light, the methods generally involve immersing tissues in solutions that minimize refraction of light to enhance detection of fluorescent signal deeper into tissues. Here, we developed a new tissue preparative method called ADAPT-3D with broad applicability across species and tissue types. This method enables efficient antibody staining and detection of endogenous fluorophore
