Polysubstance use by sexual identity among US adults, 2021.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding polysubstance use among US sexual minority adults is important to serve as a population-level baseline to promote health equity around substance use prevention and public health strategies. This study quantifies the number of substances used by sexual identity among US adults. METHODS: We used the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health and included adults (aged ≥18) (unweighted n = 47,291). We conducted multivariable Poisson regression models to examine the number of substances used in the past year (count variable; range: 0-18) by sexual identity ("heterosexual"

Concurrent use of opioids and stimulants and risk of fatal overdose: A cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Stimulant use has been rising among people with opioid use disorder in recent years in North America, alongside a parallel rise in illicit drug toxicity (overdose) deaths. This study aimed to examine the association between stimulant use and overdose mortality. METHODS: Data from a universal health insurance client roster were used to identify a 20% random general population sample (aged ≥12) in British Columbia, Canada between January 1 2015 and December 31 2018 (N = 1,089,682). Provincial health records were used to identify people who used opioids and/or stimulants. Fatal overd

Machine learning based risk prediction for Parkinson's disease with nationwide health screening data.

Although many studies have been conducted on machine learning (ML) models for Parkinson's disease (PD) prediction using neuroimaging and movement analyses, studies with large population-based datasets are limited. We aimed to propose PD prediction models using ML algorithms based on the National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening datasets. We selected individuals who participated in national health-screening programs > 5 times between 2002 and 2015. PD was defined based on the ICD-code (G20), and a matched cohort of individuals without PD was selected using a 1:1 random sampling method.

Opioid Agonist Treatment Recipients within Criminal Justice-Involved Populations.

Background: In 2014, nearly 2.5 million Americans had a substance use disorder for opioids (e.g., prescription pain medication or heroin) with over half estimated to have had prior contact with the criminal justice system. Despite strong evidence that opioid agonist treatment (OAT) is effective in reducing overdose, increasing treatment retention, and improving physical health and well-being outcomes, the use of OAT among justice-involved individuals is relatively rare. Methods: The current study uses national data of publicly funded admissions to substance abuse treatment to assess the extent

Growth of home respiratory equipment from 2006 to 2019 and cost control by health policies.

BACKGROUND: Home respiratory equipment (HRE) designed for the management of chronic respiratory failure includes oxygen therapy (O2), noninvasive ventilation (NIV) and mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E). The growth of the number of patients treated by HRE, the prevalence and the associated costs in France have not been determined. METHODS: The French open access national health insurance aggregated data was used to estimate the evolution of theses parameters from 2006 to 2019. RESULTS: The number of patients treated by HRE increased by 117% between 2006 and 2019, reaching a total of

Inequalities and risk factors related to non-participation in colorectal cancer screening programmes: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programmes require high levels of participation in order to reduce mortality. To improve participation rates, it is necessary to identify the health risk factors and social inequalities associated with non-participation. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted between June and September of 2019 in six databases: CINHAL, Medline, Scopus, Social Sciences Citation Index, Embase and PsycINFO. Studies assessing the relationship between health risk factors, participation in preventive activities and participation in CRC screening were included. Metho

Thirty-Day Readmission Among Patients with Alcoholic Acute Pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Alcoholic acute pancreatitis (AAP) comprises the second most common cause of acute pancreatitis in the USA, and there is lack of data regarding 30-day specific readmission causes and predictors. We aim to identify 30-day readmission rate, causes, and predictors of readmission. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the 2016 National Readmission Database of adult patients readmitted within 30 days after an index admission for AAP. RESULTS: Totally, 76,609 AAP patients were discharged from the hospital in 2016. The 30-day readmission rate was 12%. The main cause of readmissi

Antibiotic prescription patterns of South African general medical practitioners for treatment of acute bronchitis.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance is a significant public health problem. Prudent use of antibiotics is crucial in reducing this resistance. Acute bronchitis is a common reason for consultations with general medical practitioners, and antibiotics are often prescribed even though guidelines recommend not prescribing them for uncomplicated acute bronchitis. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the antibiotic prescription patterns of South African (SA) general medical practitioners in the treatment of acute bronchitis. METHODS: The 2013 claims for members of 11 health insurance schemes were analysed to assess

Somatic health care utilization by patients treated for substance use disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with substance use disorder (SUD) are frequently suffering from co-occurring somatic disorders, increasing the risk of mortality. Somatic health care utilization (sHCU) often remains unknown to the physician during SUD treatment. This paper analyses sHCU and associated costs among patients in SUD treatment compared to matched, non-substance dependent controls. METHODS: Health care utilization data on 4972 SUD patients were matched to 19,846 controls by gender, birth year and ethnic origin. Subcategories of patients were formed based on SUD and on co-morbid psychiatric d

Preventive Health Care for Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) comprise at least 4% of males in the United States. MSM may describe themselves as gay, bisexual, or heterosexual. Because current medical practice does not always facilitate discussion of sexual behaviors, this group of men may face barriers to receiving culturally competent, comprehensive health care, including preventive services. Barriers include a lack of a welcoming clinical environment, lack of adequate health insurance, and sexual minority stress. Health issues that have a disproportionate impact on MSM include mental health and behavioral problems, smok

Determinants of health poverty vulnerability of rural households in Jiangxi Province, China: an analysis based on risk theory.

BACKGROUND: Although China has made significant progress on poverty alleviation over the past decade, health-related poverty remains an urgent issue in the rural areas of less developed regions, such as central and western China. On the basis of risk theory, this study investigated the determinants of health poverty vulnerability of rural households lifted out of poverty in central China. METHODS: First-hand survey data collected from a convenience sample of 255 previously impoverished households in rural areas of Jiangxi Province in central China in 2024 were used in this study. In this stud

The Association Of Race With Outcomes Among Parturients Undergoing Cesarean Section With Perioperative Epidural Catheter Placement: A Nationwide Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In obstetrical health care, disparities have been documented in different aspects of maternal care and outcomes. Prior epidemiological studies have shown that labor analgesia is underused in African-American and Hispanic groups, which means there may be inadequate labor pain control in these groups. Differences in usage have been attributed primarily to insurance, educational levels and perceptional influences such as fear of paralysis and chronic low back pain. In cesarean section deliveries, race and ethnicity affect the choice of anesthesia considered. How race and ethnicity aff

Applications of biomarkers of exposure and biological effects in users of new generation tobacco and nicotine products: Tentative proposals.

Despite efforts to eliminate smoking, more than 1 billion people worldwide continue to use combustible cigarettes through choice or inability to quit. With an associated 8 million deaths, the provision of noncombustible tobacco and nicotine products that smokers will accept to replace combustible cigarettes can lessen harm. However, most of these products have entered the market only in the past 20 years. Therefore, particularly for some smoking-related diseases, epidemiological studies to test harm reduction potential are only now becoming feasible. For cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonar

[Thoracic reassignment surgeries].

Thoracic reassignment surgeries are the most common gender reassignment surgeries. They represent the first and sometimes the only step in the reassignment process for transgender patients. Surgical techniques for thoracic reassignment derive from those used for the cisgender population and are accessible to plastic surgeons who do not usually treat transgender patients. On the other hand, there are some anatomical differences between men and women that they should understand, for instance, the positioning of the neo-NAC, the neo-inframammary fold and the scars. It is therefore important to un

Working up a child with demyelinating optic neuritis: Striking a balance!

Pediatric optic neuritis (PON) is one of the commonest causes of acute vision loss in children. Although it might often be postinfectious or postvaccination, recent understanding and available evidence suggest that it can be the first manifestation of a neuro-inflammatory syndrome such as multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis or myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein associated optic neuritis. Therefore, neuroimaging, serological testing, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, testing for various systemic autoimmune conditions become a part of the
