Predictive models for subtypes of autism spectrum disorder based on single-nucleotide polymorphisms and magnetic resonance imaging.

PURPOSE: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, of which Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism are subtypes. Our goal is: 1) to determine whether a diagnostic model based on single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), brain regional thickness measurements, or brain regional volume measurements can distinguish Asperger syndrome from high-functioning autism; and 2) to compare the SNP, thickness, and volume-based diagnostic models. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our study included 18 children with ASD: 13 subjects with high-functioning autism and 5 subjects with Asperger syn

Cognitive correlates of mathematical achievement in children with cerebral palsy and typically developing children.

BACKGROUND: Remarkably few studies have investigated the nature and origin of learning difficulties in children with cerebral palsy (CP). AIMS: To investigate math achievement in terms of word-problem solving ability in children with CP and controls. Because of the potential importance of reading for word-problem solving, we investigated reading as well. SAMPLE: Children with CP attending either special (n= 41) or mainstream schools (n= 16) and a control group of typically developing children in mainstream schools (n= 16). METHOD: Group differences in third grade math and reading, controlle

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: neuropsychological and behavioral features.

Heavy prenatal alcohol exposure can cause alterations to the developing brain. The resulting neurobehavioral deficits seen following this exposure are wide-ranging and potentially devastating and, therefore, are of significant concern to individuals, families, communities, and society. These effects occur on a continuum, and qualitatively similar neuropsychological and behavioral features are seen across the spectrum of effect. The term fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) has been used to emphasize the continuous nature of the outcomes of prenatal alcohol exposure, with fetal alcohol syndr

First-episode schizophrenia patients neuropsychologically within the normal limits: evidence of deterioration in speed of processing.

In apparent contradiction to the notion of cognitive impairment as a core feature of schizophrenia, some studies have described a subgroup of patients neuropsychologically within normal limits. It remains to be determined whether this subgroup has intact cognitive functioning or a higher premorbid functioning that attenuates the evidence of deterioration. Out of a total of 111 patients with FES or schizophreniform disorder, 25 (23%) were classified as cognitive normal (CN) according to criteria based on performance in six basic cognitive dimensions and an overall composite score, and their cog

Headache and cognitive profile in children: a cross-sectional controlled study.

We investigated whether children affected by tension-type headache and migraine without aura, compared with a healthy control group that was matched by age, culturally and socioeconomically display a diverse intellectual functioning and have a separate "cognitive profile". A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2006 to November 2008 at "Sapienza University" in Rome. A total of 134 children were diagnosed as being affected by either migraine without aura (93) or tension-type headache (41). On the basis of our exclusion/inclusion criteria, we enrolled 82 of these 134 children, 63 of

Working memory in children with developmental disorders.

The aim of the present study was to directly compare working memory skills across students with different developmental disorders to investigate whether the uniqueness of their diagnosis would impact memory skills. The authors report findings confirming differential memory profiles on the basis of the following developmental disorders: Specific Language Impairment, Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Asperger syndrome (AS). Specifically, language impairments were associated with selective deficits in verbal short-term and working memory, whe

An arrhythmia classification system based on the RR-interval signal.

OBJECTIVE: This paper proposes a knowledge-based method for arrhythmic beat classification and arrhythmic episode detection and classification using only the RR-interval signal extracted from ECG recordings. METHODOLOGY: A three RR-interval sliding window is used in arrhythmic beat classification algorithm. Classification is performed for four categories of beats: normal, premature ventricular contractions, ventricular flutter/fibrillation and 2 degrees heart block. The beat classification is used as input of a knowledge-based deterministic automaton to achieve arrhythmic episode detection an

Combining low-, high-level and empirical domain knowledge for automated segmentation of ultrasonic breast lesions.

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy and the second leading cause of mortality in women. In the last decade, ultrasound along with digital mammography has come to be regarded as the gold standard for breast cancer diagnosis. Automatically detecting tumors and extracting lesion boundaries in ultrasound images is difficult due to their specular nature and the variance in shape and appearance of sonographic lesions. Past work on automated ultrasonic breast lesion segmentation has not addressed important issues such as shadowing artifacts or dealing with similar tumor like str

Is preschool language impairment a risk factor for dyslexia in adolescence?

The literacy skills of 56 school leavers from the Bishop and Edmundson (1987) cohort of preschoolers with specific language impairment (SLI) were assessed at 15 years. The SLI group performed worse on tests of reading, spelling, and reading comprehension than age-matched controls and the literacy outcomes were particularly poor for those with Performance IQ less than 100. The rate of specific reading retardation in the SLI group had increased between the ages of 8 1/2 and 15 years and there had been a substantial drop in reading accuracy, relative to age. However, over 35% had reading skills w

Should we undertake genetic research on intelligence?

Although the concept of intelligence is difficult to define, research has provided evidence for a significant genetic component. Attempts are now being made to use molecular genetic approaches to identify genes contributing to intelligence, and to determine the ways in which they interact with environmental variables. This research is then likely to determine the developmental pathways of intelligence, in an effort to understand mental handicap and learning disorders and develop new treatment strategies. This paper reviews research on the genetic basis of intelligence, and discusses the ethica

Opioid peptides in response to mental stress in asymptomatic dilated cardiomyopathy.

Fourteen asymptomatic dilated cardiomyopathy patients showing normal plasma levels of beta-endorphin, Met-enkephalin, dynorphin B, norepinephrine and endothelin-1 but elevated atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) levels underwent two Mental Arithmetic Tests (MAT), with placebo and naloxone hydrochloride infusion, respectively. MAT significantly (p < 0.01) increased blood pressure, heart rate, opioid peptides, norepinephrine, ANF, but not endothelin-1. Naloxone infusion significantly (p < 0.05) attenuated the increments produced by MAT in all measured parameters during placebo infusion. These result

Analogy tests and psychopathology at follow-up after open heart surgery.

A study of 100 coronary bypass and cardiac valvular surgery patients investigated whether preoperative brain damage, as measured by the Conceptual Level Analogy Test (CLAT), is a major risk factor for postoperative psychiatric symptoms and mortality. Three cognitive psychological tests, including the CLAT, and psychatric interviews were given preoperatively, postoperatively, and at 18-month follow-up. Surgical outcome was specified as: Catastrophic Outcome (death or severe stroke), Psychiatric Complications, or Good Outcome (survival with no psychiatric complications). Inhospital outcome relat

Ginsenoside Compound K Inhibits Complement C1qA/C3-CR3-Mediated Microglial Synaptic Pruning and Neuronal Pyroptosis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer), a classic traditional Chinese medicine, has long been used for "calming the mind and enhancing intelligence" to combat cognitive decline. Its major metabolite, ginsenoside compound K (CK), exerts neuroprotection, but the molecular mechanisms against Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study investigated the molecular mechanism by which CK attenuates microglial aberrant synaptic phagocytosis and neuronal pyroptosis via inhibiting the complement C1qA cascade. MATERIALS AND METHODS: APP/PS1 mice were
