Mitochondria-adaptor TRAK1 promotes kinesin-1 driven transport in crowded environments.

Intracellular trafficking of organelles, driven by kinesin-1 stepping along microtubules, underpins essential cellular processes. In absence of other proteins on the microtubule surface, kinesin-1 performs micron-long runs. Under crowding conditions, however, kinesin-1 motility is drastically impeded. It is thus unclear how kinesin-1 acts as an efficient transporter in intracellular environments. Here, we demonstrate that TRAK1 (Milton), an adaptor protein essential for mitochondrial trafficking, activates kinesin-1 and increases robustness of kinesin-1 stepping on crowded microtubule surfaces

Focal cemento-osseous dysplasia: A case report with a review of literature.

Cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) is the most prevalent lesion and presents as an asymptomatic, mixed radiolucent/radiopaque lesion in the tooth-bearing region of the jawbones. Histological features of COD include a cellular connective tissue stroma interspersed by the islands of woven or lamellar bone and cementum-like calcifications. Radiographically, the early COD lesions appear radiolucent, whereas in the mature lesions, radiopacities are observed surrounded by a thin rim of radiolucency. Early lesions tend to get misdiagnosed as their radiographic appearance mimics periapical cyst or granul

Zosteriform Lymphangitic Metastases of Eccrine Porocarcinoma.

Eccrine porocarcinoma (EPC) is a rare malignant neoplasm which originates from the intraepidermal portion of eccrine sweat glands or acrosyringium. Here, we report a unique case of cutaneous metastases of EPC presenting with an erosive plaque on the left thumb and multiple nodules on left forearm. The histopathological examination of the wrist lesion revealed islands of basaloid tumor cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm, downward infiltrating growths, ductal differentiation, and intracytoplasmic lumen formations and focally connected to the epidermis. Acrosyringeal differentiation was confirmed

Gene duplication and deletion, not horizontal transfer, drove intra-species mosaicism of Bartonella henselae.

Bartonella henselae is a facultative intracellular pathogen that occurs worldwide and is responsible primarily for cat-scratch disease in young people and bacillary angiomatosis in immunocompromised patients. The principal source of genome-level diversity that contributes to B. henselae's host-adaptive features is thought to be horizontal gene transfer events. However, our analyses did not reveal the acquisition of horizontally-transferred islands in B. henselae after its divergence from other Bartonella. Rather, diversity in gene content and genome size was apparently acquired through two alt

Comparative Genomic Analysis of the 2016 Vibrio cholerae Outbreak in South Korea.

In August 2016, South Korea experienced a cholera outbreak that caused acute watery diarrhea in three patients. This outbreak was the first time in 15 years that an outbreak was not linked to an overseas source. To identify the cause and to study the epidemiological implications of this outbreak, we sequenced the whole genome of Vibrio cholerae isolates; three from each patient and one from a seawater sample. Herein we present comparative genomic data which reveals that the genome sequences of these four isolates are very similar. Interestingly, these isolates form a monophyletic clade with V.

Zika virus: from an obscurity to a priority.

Despite being discovered approximately 70 years ago, Zika virus (ZIKV) has received little attention, until the occurrence of alarming epidemics in the Pacific Islands and Latin America between 2013 and 2016. These series of outbreaks resulted in crippling neurological complications in adults, and congenital deformities in new-borns. The dire outcomes marked ZIKV as a re-emerging pathogen of public health concern. Over a period of two years, extensive studies have been conducted to understand different aspects of ZIKV from pathogen biology to infection, including the immune response during vir

Spatio-temporal dynamics and biotic substrate preferences of benthic dinoflagellates in the Lesser Antilles, Caribbean sea.

Epibenthic dinoflagellates were monitored monthly over an 18 month period in Guadeloupe and Martinique (Lesser Antilles, Caribbean Sea). These islands are located in the second most affected ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) region of the world. Guadeloupe presented five times more total epibenthic dinoflagellates and two times less abundant Gambierdiscus spp. compared to Martinique, although the area of frequent CFP outbreaks covers Guadeloupe and not Martinique. Results did not show any clear seasonal variations of benthic dinoflagellates abundances. Temperature and salinity were not driving pa

Analysis of interventions against the liver fluke, opisthorchis viverrini.

We adapt a population-based model of Opisthorchis viverrini transmission dynamics to determine the effectiveness of three different interventions. The model includes the definitive hosts, humans; the reservoir hosts, dogs and cats; and the intermediate hosts, snails and fish. We consider the interventions: education campaigns to reduce the consumption of raw or undercooked fish, improved sanitation and treatment through mass drug administration. We fit model parameters to a data set from two islands in southern Lao PDR. We calculate the control reproduction number, simulate different scenarios

Virulence Factors in Salmonella Typhimurium: The Sagacity of a Bacterium.

Currently, Salmonella enterica Typhimurium (ST) is responsible for most cases of food poisoning in several countries. It is characterized as a non-specific zoonotic bacterium that can infect both humans and animals and although most of the infections caused by this microorganism cause only a self-limiting gastroenteritis, some ST strains have been shown to be invasive, crossing the intestinal wall and reaching the systemic circulation. This unusual pathogenicity ability is closely related to ST virulence factors. This review aims to portray the main virulence factors in Salmonella Typhimurium,

Mathematical analysis of the transmission dynamics of the liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini.

We develop and analyse two population-based models of the transmission dynamics of the worm parasite Opisthorchis viverrini. The life cycle of O. viverrini includes humans, cats and dogs as definitive hosts; and snails and fish as intermediate hosts. The first model has only one definitive host (humans) while the second model has two additional hosts: the reservoir hosts, cats and dogs. We define reproduction numbers and endemic equilibrium points for the two models. We use prevalence data for the five hosts from two islands in Lao People's Democratic Republic to estimate distributions of para

Integrons in Enterobacteriaceae: diversity, distribution and epidemiology.

Integrons are versatile gene acquisition systems that allow efficient capturing of exogenous genes and ensure their expression. Various classes of integrons possessing a wide variety of gene cassettes are ubiquitously distributed in enteric bacteria worldwide. The epidemiology of integrons associated multidrug resistance in Enterobacteriaceae is rapidly evolving. In the past two decades, the incidence of integrons in enteric bacteria has increased drastically with evolution of multiple gene cassettes, novel gene arrangements and complex chromosomal integrons such as Salmonella genomic islands.

Benthic myodocopid Ostracoda (Philomedidae) from the Southern Ocean.

This study is based on the material of myodocopid ostracodes of the family Philomedidae collected by the Russian Antarctic Polar Expeditions (1963-2007) and the Germany Expeditions on R/V "Polarstern" (1990-2002) from the continental shelf and upper slope near the Mawson and Davis stations, the Weddell Seas, the region of the South Shetland Islands near the Russian Polar station "Molodezhnaya" and adjacent waters. Eight philomedid species belonging to two genera were identified in these collections. Scleroconcha tuberculata sp. nov. is described and figured as a new species. Additional descrip

Understanding adaptive capacity and capacity to innovate in social-ecological systems: Applying a gender lens.

Development policy increasingly focuses on building capacities to respond to change (adaptation), and to drive change (innovation). Few studies, however, focus specifically on the social and gender differentiation of capacities to adapt and innovate. We address this gap using a qualitative study in three communities in Solomon Islands; a developing country, where rural livelihoods and well-being are tightly tied to agriculture and fisheries. We find the five dimensions of capacity to adapt and to innovate (i.e. assets, flexibility, learning, social organisation, agency) to be mutually dependan

Zika virus: history of a newly emerging arbovirus.

Zika virus was originally identified in a sentinel rhesus monkey in the Zika Forest of Uganda in 1947. The virus is a member of the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, and is transmitted to humans by Aedes species mosquitoes. The first report of Zika virus outside Africa and Asia was in 2007 when the virus was associated with a small outbreak in Yap State, part of the Federated States of Micronesia. Since then, Zika virus infections have been reported around the world, including in southeast Asia; French Polynesia and other islands in the Pacific Ocean; and parts of South, Central, and Nort

Benign incidental findings of osteopoikilosis on Tc-99m MDP bone SPECT/CT: A case report and literature review.

Osteopoikilosis is a benign but rare condition characterized by bone islands throughout the osseous tissue, which could be easily confused with bone metastasis. We present a case of a 37-year-old man presented to orthopedic outpatient clinic with right hip pain for 2 weeks. There were multiple, small punctate lesions scattered throughout the skeleton on radiograph. Subsequent Tc-99m methylene diphosphonate (MDP) bone scan with pelvic single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/computed tomography (CT) showed multiple enostoses without abnormal focal MDP uptake. Therefore, clinical diagn

Zika Virus on a Spreading Spree: what we now know that was unknown in the 1950's.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that is transmitted through the bite of Aedes spp mosquitoes and less predominantly, through sexual intercourse. Prior to 2007, ZIKV was associated with only sporadic human infections with minimal or no clinical manifestations. Recently the virus has caused disease outbreaks from the Pacific Islands, the Americas, and off the coast of West Africa with approximately 1.62 million people suspected to be infected in more than 60 countries around the globe. The recent ZIKV outbreaks have been associated with guillain-barré syndrome, congenital syndro

Significant Role of Segmental Duplications and SIDD Sites in Chromosomal Translocations of Hematological Malignancies: A Multi-parametric Bioinformatic Analysis.

Recurrent non-random chromosomal translocations are hallmark characteristics of leukemogenesis, and however, molecular mechanisms underlying these rearrangements are less explored. The fundamental question is, why and how chromosomes break and reunite so precisely in the genome. Meticulous understanding of mechanism leading to chromosomal rearrangement can be achieved by characterizing breakpoints. To address this hypothesis, a novel multi-parametric computational approach for characterization of major leukemic translocations within and around breakpoint region was performed. To best of our kn

Mansonella ozzardi: a neglected New World filarial nematode.

Mansonella ozzardi (Nematoda: Onchocercidae) is an understudied filarial nematode, originally described by Patrick Manson in 1897, that can be transmitted by two families of dipteran vectors, biting midges (most of them members of the genus Culicoides) and black flies (genus Simulium). With a patchy geographic distribution from southern Mexico to northwestern Argentina, human infection with M. ozzardi is highly prevalent in some of the Caribbean islands, along riverine communities in the Amazon Basin, and on both sides of the border between Bolivia and Argentina. There is no clinical entity un

Cyano-Functionalized Triarylamines on Coinage Metal Surfaces: Interplay of Intermolecular and Molecule-Substrate Interactions.

The self-assembly of cyano-functionalized triarylamine derivatives on Cu(111), Ag(111) and Au(111) was studied by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Different bonding motifs, such as antiparallel dipolar coupling, hydrogen bonding and metal coordination, were observed. Whereas on Ag(111) only one hexagonally close-packed pattern stabilized by hydrogen bonding is observed, on Au(111) two different partially porous phases are present at submonolayer coverage, stabilized by dipolar

Yaws: 110 years after Castellani's discovery of Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue.

Yaws is a neglected infectious disease that affects mostly children and adolescents living in poor, rural communities in humid, tropical areas of Africa, southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. The etiological agent of yaws, Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue (T. pertenue), was discovered by Aldo Castellani in 1905 shortly after Schaudinn and Hoffmann discovered the etiological agent of syphilis, T. pallidum subspecies pallidum. The discovery of T. pertenue enabled the development of animal models and the identification of an effective antibiotic treatment (i.e., penicillin) for yaws. A W
