Rising to the challenge: an international Delphi consensus study on fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia.

Fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) is a condition in which a fetus is at risk for severe thrombocytopenia, possibly resulting in intracranial haemorrhage, due to maternal alloantibodies formed against human platelet antigens (HPAs). Currently, no FNAIT screening programme exists. Pregnancies at risk of FNAIT are identified in individuals who have previously given birth to a child with FNAIT. Management of the condition differs depending on the country. A panel of experts in obstetrics, neonatology, paediatrics, laboratory and transfusion medicine, haematology, health techno

Women, intuition, and management-the Yin and Yang of nonconscious thought.

This article explores the claim that men's and women's intuition tend to differ in some way, and that women's intuition can make a distinctive contribution to leadership and management. In response to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of the current business environment, intuition has received increased attention from the business community. Likewise, it has become an intense area of academic research, along with the unconscious knowledge and integration on which it largely depends. Although both women and men process information partially below awareness, there are likely some distinctions

Assessing the efficacy of a virtual reality lower leg fasciotomy surgery training model compared to cadaveric training.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) holds great potential in education that has not been actualized in surgical training programs; much of the research into medical applications of VR have been in management and decision making rather than procedural training. This pilot study assessed the feasibility of virtual reality surgical educational training (VR-SET) in open trauma surgery procedures compared to in person cadaver-based training (CBT). In traditional surgical educational settings multiple trainees share a cadaver, often due to logistical and fiscal limitations precluding routine one-to-one

Factors affecting community participation in drone-based larviciding using Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) for bio-control of malaria vectors in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a significant health issue in Rwanda. Primary malaria prevention methods include insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying as core interventions. Mosquito repellents, larval source management (LSM), and housing improvement are recommended as supplemental vector control methods. A 2020-2021 study in rice field habitats of peri-urban of Kigali City successfully evaluated the entomological and epidemiological impacts of drone-based larviciding using Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti). METHODS: The present study employed a concurrent mixed-method

Augmenting Adherence: Improving Medication Compliance and Patient Education in Anti-Retroviral Therapy through Graphical Representation.

Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) is a fundamental principle in the management of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, significantly improving the quality of life for individuals living with the virus. However, the success of ART crucially depends on patient adherence to complex medication regimens that come with the therapy. Patients must meticulously adhere to their prescribed treatment plans to maintain viral suppression and prevent the progression of HIV. Medication adherence, a multifaceted challenge in healthcare, becomes particularly entangled within the realm of ART. Patients are

Documentary analysis of national and international guidance for community clinicians referring patients with suspected chronic limb-threatening ischaemia.

BACKGROUND: Delayed referral of patients with chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI) from the community to vascular services may increase risk of amputation due to delayed revascularisation. Lack of appropriate guidance for clinicians in the community may contribute to this problem. This documentary analysis investigated referral guidance available to primary care clinicians. METHODS: National and international documents providing guidance on CLTI management were identified by searching sources including Medline, Embase, Guidelines International Network and College/Society websites. Patient Perceptions of Surveillance of Small Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms in the Over 85s.

BACKGROUND: Recently instigated local practice for patients with small abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) involves contacting all patients, aged ≥85 years, to discuss with them the advantages and disadvantages of removal from surveillance. However, reasons why patients opt to remain on, or come off, surveillance, are currently unknown. The present study's objective is to explore patient perception of surveillance decision-making. METHODS: A mixed-methods exploratory evaluation was undertaken using patient feedback obtained from a telephone survey. All patients aged ≥85 years, who had a consult

Exploring the unmet needs and experiences of informal caregivers of patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) receiving haemodialysis - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD) receiving haemodialysis experience multiple symptoms, which can present physical and emotional challenges for both patients and their informal caregivers. Caregivers can experience anxiety, depression, and social isolation negatively impacting their overall wellbeing and resulting in caregiver burden. The needs of this group of caregivers have been largely neglected, with little emphasis placed on supportive interventions that might assist and support them in their caring role. AIM: The aim of this study Is to explore the unmet needs a

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Awareness of and Attitudes Toward Epistaxis.

Epistaxis, commonly known as nasal bleeding, ranks among the most prevalent emergencies encountered in otorhinolaryngology. The etiology of epistaxis is multifaceted, arising from both local and systemic factors. In Saudi Arabia, a country with a relatively high prevalence of epistaxis, understanding the level of awareness and attitudes toward first aid management of epistaxis is of paramount importance. This systematic review aims to bridge this knowledge gap by evaluating the awareness of and attitudes toward epistaxis first aid in Saudi Arabia. This systematic review and meta-analysis adher

A case report of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis followed by cesarean section: Clinical diagnosis and treatment experience.

RATIONALE: Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS), also known as abdominal cocoon syndrome, is an uncommon condition that typically presents with features of bowel obstruction. EPS followed by cesarean section is extremely rare. Intestinal obstruction caused by EPS lacks specificity and poses clinical difficulties for diagnosis and treatment. We present the case of a patient with recurrent intestinal obstruction followed by cesarean section, and the diagnosis of EPS was confirmed intraoperatively. The patient recovered well postoperatively, and achieved satisfactory therapeutic results. Mana

Tinnitus healthcare: a survey revealing extensive variation in opinion and practices across Europe.

UNLABELLED: Tinnitus remains a scientific and clinical problem whereby, in spite of increasing knowledge on effective treatment and management for tinnitus, very little impact on clinical practice has been observed. There is evidence that prolonged, obscure and indirect referral trajectories persist in usual tinnitus care. OBJECTIVE: It is widely acknowledged that efforts to change professional practice are more successful if barriers are identified and implementation activities are systematically tailored to the specific determinants of practice. The aim of this study was to administer a hea

Patterns of insecticide resistance in Aedes aegypti: meta-analyses of surveys in Latin America and the Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: The re-emergence of worldwide concern with arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) draws increasing attention to their mosquito vectors, particularly Aedes aegypti, whose control heavily rely on insecticide use. As a consequence, insecticide resistance is frequent, but the general patterns of occurrence, cross-resistance and prevailing mechanisms remain unrecognized in some areas such as the Neotropical region. Thus, we sought here to recognize the general trends and patterns of insecticide resistance in Latin America and the Caribbean. A systematic literature review (2008-2018) aime

Qualitative assessment of knowledge transfer regarding preterm birth in Malawi following the implementation of targeted health messages over 3 years.

BACKGROUND: In 2012, we performed a needs assessment and gap analysis to qualitatively assess providers' and patients' knowledge and perceptions regarding preterm birth (PTB). During the study, we identified knowledge gaps surrounding methods to reduce the risk of occurrence of PTB and management options if preterm labor/birth occur. We targeted health messages toward these gaps. The objective of the present study was to assess the impact of our community health worker-based patient education program 3 years after it was implemented. METHODS: Fifteen focus groups including 70 participants wer

Medical Oncologists' Beliefs, Practices, and Knowledge Regarding Marijuana Used Therapeutically: A Nationally Representative Survey Study.

Background Although almost every state medical marijuana (MM) law identifies cancer as a qualifying condition, little research supports MM's use in oncology. We hypothesized that the discrepancy between these laws and the scientific evidence base poses clinical challenges for oncologists. Oncologists' beliefs, knowledge, and practices regarding MM were examined in this study. Methods In November 2016, we mailed a survey on MM to a nationally-representative, random sample of 400 medical oncologists. Main outcome measures included whether oncologists reported discussing MM with patients, recomme

Update on Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infections in pigs: Knowledge gaps for improved disease control.

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyopneumoniae) is the primary pathogen of enzootic pneumonia, a chronic respiratory disease in pigs. Infections occur worldwide and cause major economic losses to the pig industry. The present paper reviews the current knowledge on M. hyopneumoniae infections, with emphasis on identification and analysis of knowledge gaps for optimizing control of the disease. Close contact between infected and susceptible pigs is the main route of M. hyopneumoniae transmission. Management and housing conditions predisposing for infection or disease are known, but further research
