OBJECTIVE: We aimed at elucidating the potential function of long noncoding ribonucleic acids (lncRNAs) small nucleolar RNA host gene 1 (SNHG1) in the progression of laryngeal cancer (LC) and its underlying mechanism.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Relative level of SNHG1 in LC tissues and controls was determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). PURPOSE: Investigate the incidence, the degree and the effect of gastro-pharyngeal reflux (GPR) in laryngectomised patients.

BACKGROUND: Chondroradionecrosis (CRN) is an uncommon but significant complication of laryngeal radiotherapy that presents a diagnostic challenge to clinicians through its similarity in presentation to cancer recurrence.
METHODS: Two hundred ninety-four patients underwent primary, adjuvant, or salvage radiation for laryngeal cancer from 1991 to 2015 at the University of Wisconsin. Medical records were reviewed to identify and characterize patients with a diagnosis of CRN.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Primary subglottic cancer is a rare malignancy. We investigated the efficacy and toxicity of radiotherapy for subglottic cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients with primary squamous cell carcinoma of the subglottis received radiotherapy, 14 of whom also underwent chemotherapy. Of the 19 patients, 15 received definitive radiotherapy to the gross tumors with total doses of 70-70.2 Gy in 35-39 fractions, and 4 underwent preoperative radiotherapy with total doses of 37.8-55.8 Gy in 21-31 fractions, followed by total laryngectomy.

In a retrospective study of all patients who had pulmonary embolism during a 37-year span at M. D. Anderson Hospital, we identified 502 patients, 30 of whom had a primary malignancy in the head and neck region. OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: A total laryngectomy (TL) is performed as a primary or salvage therapy for laryngeal carcinoma. Pharyngotomy closure after TL is typically performed using manual sutures. Automatic stapling devices are routinely used in thoracoabdominal surgery, but have not been widely accepted for use in pharyngotomy closure. Previously described closed stapling techniques of pharyngeal closure do not allow direct evaluation of surgical margins and are limited to endolaryngeal disease. We describe an open technique for pharyngotomy closure using a mechanical stapling device.

We report a case of nocardiosis in a patient with several risk factors for this rare infection. Radiologically, the patient's multiple lung abscesses were misinterpreted as pulmonary metastases. Diagnosis was finally reached by the growth of Nocardia asteroides in two different blood culture sets. Nocardia bacteraemia is a rare clinical event. Despite initiation of an effective antibiotic therapy, the patient died. Autopsy revealed disseminated nocardial abscesses in the lungs, the kidneys and the brain.
