A high-resolution interactive atlas of the human brainstem using magnetic resonance imaging.

Conventional atlases of the human brainstem are limited by the inflexible, sparsely-sampled, two-dimensional nature of histology, or the low spatial resolution of conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Postmortem high-resolution MRI circumvents the challenges associated with both modalities. A single human brainstem specimen extending from the rostral diencephalon through the caudal medulla was prepared for imaging after the brain was removed from a 65-year-old male within 24 h of death. The specimen was formalin-fixed for two weeks, then rehydrated and placed in a custom-made MRI comp

Magnetic resonance imaging demonstration of an unusual triplication anomaly of the inferior vena cava.

Knowing congenital anomalies of the inferior vena cava is of clinical importance for radiological interventional procedures and retroperitoneal surgery. We present magnetic resonance imaging of the coincidence of fenestrated right and left inferior vena cava anomalies in a 78-year-old woman. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging is an important imaging technique that is preferred in evaluating vascular structures in this locality.

On the reconstruction of magnetic resonance current density images of the human brain: Pitfalls and perspectives.

Magnetic resonance current density imaging (MRCDI) of the human brain aims to reconstruct the current density distribution caused by transcranial electric stimulation from MR-based measurements of the current-induced magnetic fields. So far, the MRCDI data acquisition achieves only a low signal-to-noise ratio, does not provide a full volume coverage and lacks data from the scalp and skull regions. In addition, it is only sensitive to the component of the current-induced magnetic field parallel to the scanner field. The reconstruction problem thus involves coping with noisy and incomplete data,

Synthetic magnetic resonance imaging for quantitative parameter evaluation of temporomandibular joint disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the usefulness of quantitative parameters [longitudinal relaxation (T1), transverse relaxation (T2), and proton density (PD)] obtained with synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in assessing the progression of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. METHODS: For individual TMJ disorder diagnoses, the presence of disc displacement in MRI and the osseous change in cone-beam CT were investigated. Joints were classified into three stages: (1) silent stage, no disc displacement or osseous change; (2) incipient stage, presence of disc displacement and absenc

Electro-magnetically modulated self-propulsion of swimming sperms via cervical canal.

The purpose of this study is to theoretically investigate the electro-magneto-biomechanics of the swimming of sperms through cervical canal in the female reproductive system. During sexual intercourse, millions of sperms migrate into the cervix in large groups, hence we can approximately model their movement activity by a swimming sheet through the electrically-conducting biofluid. The Eyring-Powell fluid model is considered as the base fluid to simulate male's semen with self-propulsive sperms. An external magnetic field is applied on the flow in transverse direction. The governing partial di

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in patients with borderline personality disorder: A systematic review.

The literature on the application of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is unclear, even though its neuromodulatory effects on underlying neural circuitry involved in BPD symptoms suggest that it could be a potential treatment option. We sought to review the evidence on rTMS as a treatment option in BPD. PubMed (for Medline database), Google Scholar, and Scopus were systematically searched following the PRISMA guidelines for studies of any design examining the application of the rTMS treatment in adult patients with precise and primary

Diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging in detecting depth of invasion of tongue cancers.

The recent eighth edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system has introduced depth of invasion (DOI) as one of its important components. DOI is also important for deciding neck management in superficial tongue cancers. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is mainly used to assess DOI, and in this study we have evaluated the efficacy of MRI to detect it. This is a retrospective study consisting of 60 treatment-naïve tongue cancer patients operated on between July 2017 and June 2019. Patients underwent MR imaging on an Optima MR450W 1.5T unit, and MRI was reported by two

Corpus callosum morphology in major mental disorders: a magnetic resonance imaging study.

Mental disorders diagnosis is based on specific clinical criteria. However, clinical studies found similarities and overlapping phenomenology across a variety of disorders, which suggests a common neurobiological substrate. Thus, there is a need to measure disease-related neuroanatomical similarities and differences across conditions. While structural alterations of the corpus callosum have been investigated in obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, no study has addressed callosal aberrations in all diseases in a single study. Moreover, re

Quantification of mitral regurgitation using transthoracic echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

Both Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) have well-established role in mitral regurgitation (MR) quantification for optimal management strategy. We assessed the correlation between TTE and CMR in the quantification of MR. Participants with isolated MR and echocardiographic mitral regurgitant volume (RVol) ≥ 30 mL/beat were included. A consecutive sample of 30 participants (Mean age 52.7 ± 19.3 years, 50% males) was selected and referred for indirect and direct CMR quantification of mitral RVol. There was a statistically significant strong positive correlat

Clinical and magnetic resonance imaging patterns of extensive Chikungunya virus-associated myelitis.

Chikungunya fever is an arbovirus infection transmitted by the same mosquito vector of dengue and Zika virus. Besides high fever, common clinical symptoms include articular pain and general malaise. Neurological involvement is unusual, but some patients may develop peripheral and central nervous system involvement, including meningoencephalitis, myelitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. We present three cases of Chikungunya fever complicated with extensive myelitis. The spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) pattern is characterized by multiple dotted-l

Association of preoperative seizures with tumor metabolites quantified by magnetic resonance spectroscopy in gliomas.

Seizures are common in patients with gliomas; however, the mechanisms of epileptogenesis in gliomas have not been fully understood. This study hypothesized that analyzing quantified metabolites using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) might provide novel insights to better understand the epileptogenesis in gliomas, and specific metabolites might be indicators of preoperative seizures in gliomas. We retrospectively investigated patient information (gender, age at diagnosis of tumor, their survival time) and tumor information (location, histology, genetic features, and metabolites according t

Feature selection from magnetic resonance imaging data in ALS: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: With the advances in neuroimaging in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), it has been speculated that multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is capable to contribute to early diagnosis. Machine learning (ML) can be regarded as the missing piece that allows for the useful integration of multiparametric MRI data into a diagnostic classifier. The major challenges in developing ML classifiers for ALS are limited data quantity and a suboptimal sample to feature ratio which can be addressed by sound feature selection. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review to collect MRI bi
