Aberrant Feeding and Growth in Neonates With Prenatal Opioid Exposure: Evidence of Neuromodulation and Behavioral Changes.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) among pregnant women over the last decade has led to more than a fivefold increase in the number of neonates born with withdrawal signs known as Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) or Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS). The impact of prenatal opioid exposure on these neonates remains a public health and research priority due to both its short and long-term effects on offspring. Among the adverse long-term effects associated with OUD is a metabolic syndrome with accompanying cardiovascular comorbidities. The susceptibility to metabolic diseases may begin as earl

Relationships between body mass index, fat mass, muscle mass, and musculoskeletal pain in community residents.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationships between fat mass, muscle mass, fat:muscle mass ratio, metabolic syndrome, and musculoskeletal pain in community residents. METHODS: In the Korean Health and Genome Study, 1,530 participants (mean ± SD age 60.8 ± 8.60 years) completed pain questionnaires and underwent dual x-ray absorptiometry to calculate body composition. Pain was categorized according to the number of pain regions, such that widespread pain, defined as pain above the waist, below the waist, on both sides of the body, and in the axial region, represented the most severe pain. Lipoprotein insulin resistance score in nondiabetic patients with obesity after bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: Lipoprotein insulin resistance (LPIR) score is a composite biomarker representative of atherogenic dyslipidemia characteristic of early insulin resistance. It is elevated in obesity and may provide information not captured in glycosylated hemoglobin and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance. While bariatric surgery reduces diabetes incidence and resolves metabolic syndrome, the effect of bariatric surgery on LPIR is untested. OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the effects of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy on LPIR in nondiabetic women with obesity. SETT

Treatment With Treprostinil and Metformin Normalizes Hyperglycemia and Improves Cardiac Function in Pulmonary Hypertension Associated With Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction.

OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) due to left heart disease (group 2), especially in the setting of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), is the most common cause of PH worldwide; however, at present, there is no proven effective therapy available for its treatment. PH-HFpEF is associated with insulin resistance and features of metabolic syndrome. The stable prostacyclin analog, treprostinil, is an effective and widely used Food and Drug Administration-approved drug for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. While the effect of treprostinil on metabolic syndro

Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior in Metabolically Healthy versus Unhealthy Obese and Non-Obese Individuals - The Maastricht Study.

BACKGROUND: Both obesity and the metabolic syndrome are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Although both frequently occur together in the same individual, obesity and the metabolic syndrome can also develop independently from each other. The (patho)physiology of "metabolically healthy obese" (i.e. obese without metabolic syndrome) and "metabolically unhealthy non-obese" phenotypes (i.e. non-obese with metabolic syndrome) is not fully understood, but physical activity and sedentary behavior may play a role. OBJECTIVE: To examine objectively measured

[Metabolical characteristics in patients with multiple symmetrical lipomatosis].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Multiple symmetrical lipomatosis (MSL) is a rare cause of obesity. As the cause is unknown the therapeutic options are unsatisfactory. This study was undertaken to elucidate whether there are singular metabolic and endocrine characteristics in such patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data were collected from 15 patients with MSL who had been referred to our clinic during the last ten years. Various metabolic and endocrine parameters as well as bone density were measured. The possible presence of an obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome was also looked for. RESULTS: Five of

Path analysis model to identify the effect of poor diet quality on NAFLD among Iranian adults from Amol Cohort Study.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is expanding as a global health problem with approximately 25% of the world's population affected by it. Dietary modification is one of the most important strategies for preventing NAFLD. The association between nutrient density and the Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI2015) with NAFLD demonstrates that nutrient density is an independent predictor of NAFLD in Iranian adults [fully adjusted model: OR (95% CI)tertile3vs.1: 0.68 (0.54-0.85), P for trend = 0.001]. However, a favorable association between NAFDL and diet quality (HEI 2015) is more pronounced in

Polysaccharides Obtained from Cordyceps militaris Alleviate Hyperglycemia by Regulating Gut Microbiota in Mice Fed a High-Fat/Sucrose Diet.

Polysaccharides isolated from fungus Cordyceps militaris display multi-biofunctions, such as immunostimulation, down-regulation of hyperlipidemia, and anti-cancer function. The occurrence of obesity and metabolic syndrome is related to the imbalance of gut microbiota. In this study, the effects of C. militaris and its fractions on modifying metabolic syndrome in mice were evaluated. Mice were fed a high-fat/high-sucrose diet (HFSD) for 14 weeks to induce body weight increase and hyperlipidemia symptoms in mice, and then the mice were simultaneously given a HFSD and C. militaris samples for a f

No Independent Association of Circulating Fetuin-A with Insulin Sensitivity in Young Women.

Animal data link high circulating fetuin-A to low insulin sensitivity and observational studies identify the hepatokine as a marker of future incident type 2 diabetes mellitus in humans. However, a recent, well-powered Mendelian randomization study finds no causal role. We therefore tested in a deeply-phenotyped human cohort if circulating fetuin-A correlates independently with insulin sensitivity and how it relates to the metabolic syndrome and ectopic fat deposition. We analyzed data from 290 young women with and without recent gestational diabetes mellitus. We found that circulating fetuin-

Phenotypic expression of polycystic ovary syndrome in South Asian women.

UNLABELLED: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) occurs in 6% to 10% of women and, as the most common worldwide endocrinopathy of reproductive-aged women, is linked to a constellation of reproductive and metabolic abnormalities, including anovulatory infertility, hirsutism, acne, and insulin resistance in association with metabolic syndrome. Despite a genetic component to PCOS, ethnicity plays an important role in the phenotypic expression of PCOS, with South Asian PCOS women having more severe reproductive and metabolic symptoms than other ethnic groups. South Asians with PCOS seek medical care a

Polycystic ovary syndrome: a dermatologic approach.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (POS) is one of the most common endocrine abnormalities affecting women of reproductive age. It is a cause of significant social embarrassment and emotional distress. The pathogenesis of the disease is not yet fully understood, but it is thought to be a complex multigenic disorder, including abnormalities in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, steroidogenesis, and insulin resistance. The main diagnostic findings of the syndrome are: hyperandrogenism, chronic anovulation and polycystic ovarian morphology seen on ultrasound. Hyperandrogenism is generally manifested as hirs

Pulmonary and gastric metastatic calcification due to milk-alkali syndrome: a case report.

The incidence of metastatic calcification is influenced by high serum calcium and phosphate concentrations and local physicochemical conditions, such as pH. A high pH accelerates tissue calcification. Patients with milk-alkali syndrome typically present with renal failure, hypercalcemia, and metabolic alkalosis, which are caused by the ingestion of calcium and absorbable alkali. Among patients with impairment of renal function, milk-alkali syndrome is a major cause of hypercalcemia. Long-term use of furosemide will lead to hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, and eventually renal failure (i.e., p
