High-dose phytosterols supplementation improves lactation performance, modulates rumen microbiota, and reduces methane emission intensity in mid-lactation Holstein dairy cows.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Enteric methane emission from dairy cows contributes substantially to greenhouse gas production and represents an inefficient loss of dietary energy. Phytosterols are plant-derived bioactive compounds with lipid-modulating and rumen fermentation-regulating properties; however, their effects on methane emission intensity and rumen microbial ecology in lactating dairy cows remain insufficiently explored. This study evaluated the effects of dietary phytosterols supplementation on lactation performance, nutrient digestibility, serum biochemical parameters, rumen fermentation ch

A caprine mammary infection model for highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus spillover into dairy cows represents the emergence of a mammalian host capable of sustaining a panzootic and creates a transmission pathway to humans. HPAI research involving dairy cows is constrained by the space requirements needed to house large animals in high biocontainment. A small ruminant model would enable larger sample sizes while reducing costs, improving safety, and lowering logistical barriers to conduct research. Here, we establish dairy goats as a model for HPAI mammary infection. Intramammary inoculation with HPAI H5N1 genotyp

[Acne and diet].

In industrialized countries acne presents as an epidemic disease of civilization affecting sebaceous follicles of adolescents and young adults, associated with increased body mass index and insulin resistance. "Western style" diet, characterized by high glycaemic load and increased consumption of insulinotropic milk proteins, plays an important role in acne pathogenesis. On the cellular level, nutrient-derived metabolic signals are sensed by the metabolic transcription factor FoxO1 and integrated by the regulatory kinase mTORC1. mTORC1, the central hub of protein- and lipid biosynthesis, cell

Intestinal "normalization" of germ-free rabbits with rabbit caecal microflora: effect of dosing regimens.

Hysterectomy-derived germ-free (GF) rabbits were given strictly anaerobic microflora obtained from the caecum of an antibiotic-decontaminated conventional rabbit. One group was given the caecal flora diluted in doe's milk. The second group received caecal flora without doe's milk and administration of the flora was repeated when the animals were given pelleted diet. Body weight and intestinal parameters determined in the two groups of rabbits were compared with values in rabbits conventionally raised with the doe. In GF rabbits given caecal flora, the values for most intestinal parameters were

Effect of dietary potassium percent for lactating dairy cows.

Three groups of Holstein cows (four cows per group) past the peak of lactation were fed dietary potassium as percent of dry matter as follows: .45% for 20 days to all groups; .45, .55, and .66% to the respective groups for 12 wk; and .66% to all groups for 19 days. Dietary potassium had no significant effect on milk fat and solids-not-fat contents of milk, milk production, or milk and blood serum cations (potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium). However, body weights were affected. Symptoms common in potassium deficiency were not apparent. Average daily milk production, feed intake, and body we

New approaches to diet therapy for eosinophilic esophagitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: An empiric step-up (2-4-6) elimination diet remains the most common dietary approach in clinical practice when treating eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). However, research in this field has fallen behind pharmacological therapy. This review aims to summarize novel approaches to dietary therapy for EoE. RECENT FINDINGS: A first prospective multicenter study in 41 pediatric patients (mean age 9 years) has evaluated the efficacy of a cow's milk elimination diet. This dietary approach led to histological remission in 51% of patients, albeit a caveat is that up to 80% of patients

Turkish Neonatal Society guideline on enteral feeding of the preterm infant.

Early initiation of enteral feeding with the own mother's milk and prevention of postnatal growth failure is the target of nutrition in preterm infants. Together with total parenteral nutrition, mouth care and minimal enteral nutrition is started with colostrum in the very early hours of life in small preterm infants. Expressed mother's milk is given via a gastric tube and gradually increased in accordance with the gestational age/birth weight and the risk factors. For infants born heavier than 1 000 grams, the aim is to reach total enteral feeding at the end of first week, and at the end of t

Immunoglobulin A supplementation abrogates bacterial translocation and preserves the architecture of the intestinal epithelium.

BACKGROUND: Breast milk has been shown to prevent gut-origin infections in neonates through undefined mechanisms. Putative protective factors in breast milk include immunoglobulin (Ig)A, IgG, and lactoferrin. We examined their role in bacterial translocation in neonatal rabbits. METHODS: IgA, IgG, and lactoferrin were isolated from rabbit breast milk through gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography. Neonates were randomized to receive breast milk, formula alone, or formula supplemented with IgA, IgG, or lactoferrin. Quantitative cultures were performed on day 7 for bacterial translocati

Lactational transfer of tetrachloroethylene in rats.

Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is a commonly used organic solvent and a suspected human carcinogen, reportedly transferred to human breast milk following inhalation exposure. Transfer of PCE to milk may represent a threat to the nursing infant. A physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model was developed to quantitatively assess the transfer of inhaled PCE into breast milk and the consequent exposure of the nursing infant. The model was validated in lactating rats. Lactating Sprague-Dawley female rats were exposed via inhalation to PCE at concentrations ranging from 20-1000 ppm, and then retu

Disturbed galactose metabolism in elderly and diabetic humans is associated with cataract formation.

Lactose consumption has been associated with a high incidence of cataract in northern Indian and southern Italian populations. Galactose absorbed after hydrolysis of lactose from milk in individuals with normal lactase activity is considered responsible. However, lactase-deficient subjects who often avoid drinking milk are able to digest lactose and absorb free galactose in fermented milk and yogurt. This study was conducted to evaluate the relationships between milk and yogurt consumption, galactose metabolism and cataract risk. Milk ingestion was dose-related with cataract risk in lactose di

Calcium and phosphorus metabolism in full-term infants.

Appropriate intake of dietary calcium and phosphorus is essential for the maintenance of mineral homeostasis and support of adequate bone mineralization in growing infants. Disturbances of calcium homeostasis such as newborn hypocalcemia, have been shown to be secondary to high oral phosphate intake. The incidence of hypocalcemic tetany has changed from epidemic proportions in newborns, who were formerly fed evaporated cow's milk formula, to the present sporadic occurrence in newborns who are now fed humanized cow's milk formula, with a calcium concentration of about 50 mg/dl and a phosphorus

[Effects of partial drying of an udder quarter in cows with teat injuries].

In cows with teat lesions, partial drying-off of the affected mammary quarter is recommended for a period of 3 to 10 days. The other three quarters are normally milked. Partial drying-off reduces the risks of complications due to the daily milking. The slight reduction of milk production, connected with the temporary drying-off a single quarter, is nearly compensated within 4 weeks.

Effect of lactose-induced diarrhoea on absorption of nitrogen and fat.

The absorption of fat and the absorption and retention of nitrogen were studied in 20 children with kwashiorkor. 13 of the 20 had lactose malabsorption and severe diarrhoea on milk feeds. Fat absorption was not affected by lactose-induced diarrhoea, but nitrogen absorption was impaired. Despite this, nitrogen retention was unaffected and it is concluded that milk and milk products would continue to be used in programmes to eliminate malnutrition.

An ecological interdependence of diet and disease? A study of infection in one tribe consuming two different diets.

The nature and incidence of infections were studied in two groups of Turkana living in the same area but eating different diets; one consumed milk only and the other a combination of fish and milk. The only apparent and significant nutritional difference between the two groups was mild iron deficiency in the milk drinkers. Episodes of fever, symptomatic infection with malaria and brucellosis, molluscum contagiosum and common warts, episodes of diarrhea, and serological evidence of infection with Entamoeba histolytica were significantly increased in Turkana eating fish. We suggest that this phe

Development and validation of a high throughput multiplex immunofluorescence assay to detect all human immunoglobulin isotypes and subclasses in human fluids.

Antibodies in human milk protect infants against infections, but currently no assay is described that is able to simultaneously measure all 9 antibody isotypes and subclasses immunoglobulins in human fluids, such as human milk. Our cohort "Protecting against Respiratory tract Infections through human Milk Analysis" (PRIMA) is focused on the relation between the occurrence of respiratory infections during the first year of life and concentration of maternal antibodies in breastfeeding. We developed and successfully validated a multiplex assay that is able to measure all nine antibody isotypes a

Experimental infection and viral pathogenesis of a human isolate of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza strain in Jersey cows.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 viruses have circulated globally since 1996. In recent years, clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 viruses have crossed the species barrier into multiple species, including dairy cattle, causing a significant decrease in milk production and rapid spread across multiple U.S. states in 2024. Previous studies have demonstrated that Holstein cows are susceptible to H5N1 infection in laboratory settings, mirroring field observations. To investigate whether Jersey cows are susceptible to H5N1 infection and their potential as an experimental model, we inoculated three Jersey lac

Potential of Colostrum-Derived Exosomes for Promoting Hair Regeneration Through the Transition From Telogen to Anagen Phase.

Human hair dermal papillary (DP) cells comprising mesenchymal stem cells in hair follicles contribute critically to hair growth and cycle regulation. The transition of hair follicles from telogen to anagen phase is the key to regulating hair growth, which relies heavily on the activation of DP cells. In this paper, we suggested exosomes derived from bovine colostrum (milk exosomes, Milk-exo) as a new effective non-surgical therapy for hair loss. Results showed that Milk-exo promoted the proliferation of hair DP cells and rescued dihydrotestosterone (DHT, androgen hormones)-induced arrest of fo

Infant formulas with synthetic oligosaccharides and respective marketing practices.

Human milk contains more than 150 different oligosaccharides, which together are among to the quantitatively predominant solid components of breast milk. The oligosaccharide content and composition of human milk show large inter-individual differences. Oligosaccharide content is mostly influenced by genetic variants of the mother's secretor status. Oligosaccharides in human milk are utilized by infants' intestinal bacteria, affecting bacterial composition and metabolic activity. Maternal secretor status, and respective differing fucosylated oligosaccharide content, has been associated both wit
