Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by stereotyped behavior, restricted interests and social/communicative deficits. The physiological etiology of ASD is not currently understood, however recent research has implicated dysregulation of the immune system as a central feature. The interplay between the stress systems, the immune system and the brain has been well-documented and implicated in other psychiatric and neurological disorders. This interplay suggests a role for the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in the etiology of ASD. We assessed l

Migraine is a complex neurologic disorder by which several systems of the central nervous system (autonomous system, affective, cognitive, sensory and motor system) may be affected on different levels. About a fourth of migraine patients have migraine auras. The most common aura is the visual aura followed by the sensorial aura but motor deficits, as well as deficits of higher cortical centers (disorders of thinking, orientation, coherence, or concentration), may occur as well. In analogy with a headache diary, an aura diary can deliver important help in the diagnostic process of rare migraine

Aberrant performance of skilled action has long been noted in schizophrenia and relatedly, recent reports have demonstrated impaired use, performance, and perception of hand gestures in this group. Still, this deficit is not acknowledged as apraxia, which to the broader medical field, characterizes impairments in skilled actions. Understanding the relationship between apraxia and schizophrenia may shed an invaluable new perspective on disease mechanism, and highlight novel treatment opportunities as well. To examine this potential link, we reviewed the evidence for the types of praxis errors,

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Parkinson disease (PD) patients are classically classified according to two alternative motor subtyping methods: (i) tremor-dominant versus postural instability and gait disorder; (ii) tremor-dominant versus akinetic-rigid. The degree of overlap between the two classification systems at diagnosis of PD and their temporal stability, as well as the correspondence between the two systems, were examined over a follow-up period of 4 years.
METHODS: Newly diagnosed, untreated PD patients were classified as tremor-dominant versus postural instability and gait disorder and tre

Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) or spinocerebellar ataxia type 3, the most common dominant spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) worldwide, is caused by over-repetition of a CAG repeat in the ATXN3/MJD1 gene, which translates into a polyglutamine tract within the ataxin-3 protein. There is no treatment for this fatal disorder. Despite evidence of the safety and efficacy of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in delaying SCA disease progression in exploratory clinical trials, unanticipated regression of patients to the status prior to treatment makes the investigation of causes and solutions urgent and impera

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has risen significantly in the last ten years, and today, roughly 1 in 68 children has been diagnosed. One hallmark set of symptoms in this disorder are stereotypical motor movements. These repetitive movements may include spinning, body-rocking, or hand-flapping, amongst others. Despite the growing number of individuals affected by autism, an effective, accurate method of automatically quantifying such movements remains unavailable. This has negative implications for assessing the outcome of ASD intervention and drug studies. Here we present a

Spinal epidural hematoma is a rare neurosurgical emergency in respect of motor and sensory loss. Identifiable reasons for spontaneous hemorrhage are vascular malformations and hemophilias. We presented a case of spontaneous epidural hematoma in an 18-year-old female patient who had motor and sensory deficits that had been present for 1 day. On MRI, there was spinal epidural hematoma posterior to the T2-T3 spinal cord. The hematoma was evacuated with T2 hemilaminectomy and T3 laminectomy. Patient recovered immediately after the surgery. Literature review depicted 112 pediatric cases (including

Cells rely on efficient protein quality control systems (PQCs) to maintain proper activity of mitochondrial proteins. As part of this system, the mitochondrial chaperone Hsp60 assists folding of matrix proteins and it is an essential protein in all organisms. Mutations in Hspd1, the gene encoding Hsp60, are associated with two human inherited diseases of the nervous system, a dominantly inherited form of spastic paraplegia (SPG13) and an autosomal recessively inherited white matter disorder termed MitCHAP60 disease. Although the connection between mitochondrial failure and neurodegeneration is

Although omission and substitution errors in neglect dyslexia (ND) patients have always been considered as different manifestations of the same acquired reading disorder, recently, we proposed a new dual mechanism model. While omissions are related to the exploratory disorder which characterizes unilateral spatial neglect (USN), substitutions are due to a perceptual integration mechanism. A consequence of this hypothesis is that specific training for omission-type ND patients would aim at restoring the oculo-motor scanning and should not improve reading in substitution-type ND. With this aim w

Dyslexia is one of the commonest learning disability. It is defined as a disorder where a child, in spite of all the classroom teaching, is not able to attain the language skills of reading, writing and spelling according to their level of intelligence. Dyslexia individuals often have difficulty in relating to the association between sound and their respective letters. Reversing or transposing the letters while writing is characteristic with letters such as b and d, P and q, etc., The prevalence among school children is reported as 9.87% and in the selected families, it is 28.32%. Dyslexia sig

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by an expanded CAG/polyglutamine repeat in the coding region of the huntingtin (htt) gene. Although HD is classically considered a motor disorder, there is now considerable evidence that early cognitive deficits appear in patients before the onset of motor disturbances. Here we demonstrate early impairment of long-term spatial and recognition memory in heterozygous HD knock-in mutant mice (Hdh(Q7/Q111)), a genetically accurate HD mouse model. Cognitive deficits are associated with reduced hippocamp

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a major clinical disorder that is characterised by multiple episodes of upper airway obstruction due to failure of the upper airway dilator muscles to maintain upper airway patency. The incidence of OSA is high in many endocrine disorders including both insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetes but the reasons for this are not known. We wished to test the hypothesis that central respiratory motor output to the upper airway muscles is preferentially impaired in a rat model of diabetes mellitus. Sternohyoid (SH) and diaphragm (DIA) EMG activities were

According to cohort studies, individuals who develop schizophrenia in adulthood show developmental abnormalities in childhood. These include delays in attainment of speech and motor milestones, problems in social adjustment, and poorer academic and cognitive performance. Another method of investigating developmental abnormalities associated with schizophrenia is the high-risk (HR) method, which follows up longitudinally the development of children at high risk for schizophrenia. Most HR studies have investigated children who have a parent with schizophrenia. This review summarizes findings con

Central cord syndrome has classically been defined by disproportionately more motor impairment of the upper than the lower extremities, bladder dysfunction, and varying degrees of sensory loss below the level of the lesion. Review of the literature indicates that the majority of causes of central cord syndrome have a traumatic etiology and few are a consequence of connective tissue disorders. This is a case of a 53-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus who developed central cord syndrome due to an exacerbation of her disease. The patient presented with upper extremity motor and sen

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder marked by progressive motor symptoms, including tremors, bradykinesia, and postural instability. The disease is characterized by dopaminergic neuron degeneration in the substantia nigra, leading to cognitive decline and motor dysfunction. Dietary supplements, known as nutraceuticals, have numerous health and medical benefits for treating and preventing the disease. Nutraceuticals offer neuroprotection through several mechanisms, including iron chelation, modulation of the cell-signaling pathway, scavenging of superoxide radicals and ROS,

Monomelic amyotrophy (MMA) is a lower motor neuron predominant disorder affecting an upper limb, which can mimic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It often presents with unilateral, distal upper limb weakness and atrophy, whose trajectory is one of an initial period of progression followed by a prolonged plateau, as opposed to the typically relentless progression as is seen in ALS. This case report describes a novel observation of a patient with MMA with an unexplained ipsilateral partial Horner's syndrome (miosis and ptosis). Horner's syndrome is known to result from sympathetic dysfunctio

Parkinson's disease is a complex neurodegenerative disorder presenting a range of motor and non-motor symptoms that greatly impact both patients and caregivers. The diverse needs arising from these symptoms make a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach crucial for effective management. This article explores the role and benefits of MDTs in Parkinson's care, highlighting how collaborative models improve clinical outcomes and quality of life. MDTs integrate neurologists, nurse specialists, therapists, and other professionals to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care. The inclusion of patien

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a multifaceted neurodegenerative disorder characterized by predominantly motor symptoms. However, recent research has broadened our understanding of PD by revealing its impact on non-motor functions, including ocular manifestations. This review explored the intricate relationship between PD and ocular health, shedding light on the mechanisms underlying common ocular diseases such as dry eye disease, cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. It also underscores the importance of recognizing ocular manifestations as potential earl
