Practicing for and performance on drivers license tests in relation to gender differences in crash involvement among novice drivers.

PROBLEM: Young male novice drivers are overrepresented in injury motor-vehicle crashes compared to females in the same category. This difference in crash involvement is often assumed to include factors such as overestimation, risk acceptance, and sensation seeking, but it can also be related to acquisition of knowledge, skills, insight, and driving experience. Therefore, this study explored possible gender differences among 18-24-year-olds in Sweden regarding practicing as learners, outcome of the driver's tests, and crash involvement during the first year after licensure. METHOD: Data for 20

Relationship between THC concentration in blood and impairment in apprehended drivers.

OBJECTIVE: The most important psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, Delta (9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of the most frequently detected substances in blood samples from suspected impaired drivers in Norway. There is growing concern over possible links between the use of cannabis and increased risk of motor-vehicle crashes. Experimental studies have provided useful information on the role of THC and dose-effect relations with respect to psychomotor performance. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate whether a physician's judgment on impairment in a real-life setting amo

Comparison of accidental and nonaccidental traumatic head injury in children on noncontrast computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: Mixed-density convexity subdural hematoma and interhemispheric subdural hematoma suggest nonaccidental head injury. The purpose of this retrospective observational study is to investigate subdural hematoma on noncontrast computed tomography in infants with nonaccidental head injury and to compare these findings in infants with accidental head trauma for whom the date of injury was known. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two blinded, independent observers retrospectively reviewed computed tomography scans with subdural hematoma performed on the day of presentation on 9 infant victims of nonacc

Long-term neuropsychological outcomes following mild traumatic brain injury.

Mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) is common, yet few studies have examined neuropsychological outcomes more than 1 year postinjury. Studies of nonreferred individuals with MTBI or studies with appropriate control groups are lacking, but necessary to draw conclusions regarding natural recovery from MTBI. We examined the long-term neuropsychological outcomes of a self-reported MTBI an average of 8 years postinjury in a nonreferred community-dwelling sample of male veterans. This was a cross-sectional cohort study derived from the Vietnam Experience Study. Three groups matched on premorbid cogni

Epidemiology of severe trauma among status Aboriginal Canadians: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Aboriginal Canadians are considered to be at increased risk of major trauma. However, population-based studies characterizing the distribution, determinants and outcomes of major trauma in this group are lacking. We sought to measure the impact of ethnicity, as reflected by Aboriginal status, on the incidence of severe trauma and to broadly define the epidemiologic characteristics of severe trauma among status Aboriginal Canadians in a large health region. METHODS: This population-based, observational study involves all adults (people > or = 16 years) resident in the Calgary Healt

Purkinje cell and cerebellar effects following developmental exposure to PCBs and/or MeHg.

We recently reported that rats exposed to PCBs and MeHg during development were impaired on the rotating rod, a test of balance and coordination that is often indicative of cerebellar damage. In addition, developmental PCB exposure is known to dramatically reduce circulating thyroid hormone concentrations, which may have a negative impact on cerebellar development. Therefore, we investigated the effects of combined PCB and MeHg exposure on Purkinje cells and the cerebellum. The serum and brains from littermates of the animals tested on the rotating rod were collected at weaning, and we also co

Management of accidental minor head injuries in children: a prospective outcomes study.

OBJECT: The authors conducted a study to determine clinical, patient/family satisfaction, and financial outcomes following application of a management scheme that involves evaluation of computerized tomography (CT) scans and emergency department observation, rather than overnight admission, for children who have sustained accidental minor closed head injuries (Glasgow Coma Scale Scores 13-15) and who have met predefined clinical and radiographic criteria. METHODS: During 18 consecutive months, all children age 24 months and older who sustained accidental minor head injuries were managed prosp

Isolated extradural hematoma in children presenting to an emergency department in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Isolated extradural hematoma (EDH) is becoming more frequently recognized in emergency departments (EDs) in children. We describe the natural history of children with isolated EDH presenting to a large Children's Hospital ED. METHODS: This is a descriptive case series study using a retrospective review of the medical records of children presenting to the ED with a diagnosis of isolated EDH over 8 years. Comparison was made with children having other injuries in addition to EDH. The cause, nature of injury, presentations to hospital, management, outcome, and any association with no

[Analysis of biases in epidemiological knowledge of road accidents in France].

BACKGROUND: In France, as in many countries, road casualty statistics are mostly based on police reports. It is generally recognized that these data are incomplete but no measurement has been made of the degree of under-reporting and thus of associated biases. This study aims to demonstrate and quantify these biases. METHODS: The study compares, after data linkage, the 10,202 people reported injured or killed in 1996 in the medical road accident victims Register in the Département du Rhône (France), with the 4,572 victims reported by the police during the same year and in the same area. General pharmacology of IY-81149, a new proton pump inhibitor.

IY-81149 (2-[(4-methoxy-3-methyl)-2-pyridinyl]methylsulfinyl -5-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-1H-benzimidazole, CAS 172152-36-2) is a new proton pump inhibitor and expected to be an antiulcer drug. Its general pharmacological effects were studied in this paper. The doses given were vehicle control, 0.3, 1, 3, 100, 300 and 1000 mg/kg and were administered orally. The animals used in this study were mouse, rat, guinea pig and beagle dog. IY-81149 decreased spontaneous locomotor activity at 1000 mg/kg and showed a weak effect in motor performance at 300 and 1000 mg/kg. IY-81149 prolonged the hexobarbital-indu

Hydromorphone-3-glucuronide: a more potent neuro-excitant than its structural analogue, morphine-3-glucuronide.

In humans, hydromorphone (HMOR) is metabolised principally by conjugation with glucuronic acid to form hydromorphone-3-glucuronide (H3G), a close structural analogue of morphine-3-glucuronide (M3G), the major metabolite of morphine. In a previous study we described the biochemical synthesis of H3G together with a preliminary evaluation of its pharmacology which revealed that it is a neuroexcitant in rats in a manner analogous to M3G. Thus the aims of the current study were to quantify the neuro-excitatory behaviours evoked by intracerebroventricular (icv) H3G in the rat and to define its poten

Computed tomographic angiography as a screening modality for blunt cervical arterial injuries: preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of blunt cervical arterial injury (CAI) is made difficult by its infrequent occurrence and delayed presentation. Beginning in January of 1995, we used computed tomographic angiography (CTA) of the neck to screen for CAI. We hypothesized that CTA could be incorporated into the workup of patients sustaining blunt neck injury as a screening modality for CAI and that CTA would increase the early detection of CAI. METHODS: Retrospective review of all CAI for the years January of 1988 to June of 1997 at a Level I trauma center. CAI diagnosed before introduction of CTA (pre

Health risks of travelers in South Africa.

Large numbers of tourists visit South Africa every year. Travelers to urban areas are at little risk of contracting an infectious disease, however the adventure traveler is at increased risk. Yellow fever is not known to occur in South Africa. Malaria is endemic in Mpumalanga and KwaZula-Natal. Schistosomiasis is endemic in large parts of the country. Although rabies is found throughout the country, only a small number of human cases is reported. High risk areas are KwaZulu-Natal, the eastern Cape and Mpumalanga provinces. The incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is high a

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in homosexual men in the San Francisco Bay Area: occupational, chemical, and environmental exposures.

Chemical, occupational, and other exposures as risk factors for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) among homosexual men are reported from a population-based case-control study of 1593 eligible subjects with NHL and 2515 control subjects conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area between 1988 and 1995. Results are presented for 312 homosexual men with NHL and 420 homosexual control subjects. HIV-positive patients were less likely than control subjects to have worked in technical, sales, and administrative occupations; service occupations; and precision production, craft, or repair-related occupations. Combined injuries of the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments of the knee. Effect of treatment on stability and function of the joint.

We performed a retrospective study of sixty-six patients (forty-one male and twenty-five female) who had a combined injury of the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments. Our purpose was to determine the prevalence of late valgus instability of the knee. The mean age of the patients was thirty-five years (range, sixteen to sixty-three years). The mean follow-up interval was forty-five months (range, twenty-one to 108 months). Twenty patients had been injured while snow-skiing; twenty-four, during other sports activities; seven, in a motor-vehicle accident; and the remaining fifteen,
