Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a vision-threatening microvascular complication of diabetes and the leading cause of blindness in working-age people. At the beginning of the metabolic disorder and in early stages of DR the patient's eyesight is often not affected. Depending on the duration of diabetes and in more advanced stages of DR the vision is compromised through the presence of diabetic macular edema (DME) and/or proliferative retinal complications. The management of DR comprises regular ophthalmic examinations according to clinical guidelines, the targeted application of multimodal imaging

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Detection and localization of the early phase of blood-brain barrier disruption (BBBD) in vivo during cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury remain a major challenge but may be a relevant outcome parameter in stroke.
METHODS: We studied early BBBD in mice after transient middle cerebral artery occlusion by multimodal, high-field (9.4T) in vivo magnetic resonance imaging, including the contrast agent gadofluorineM as an albumin-binding tracer. GadofluorineM contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging was performed to determine BBBD at 2, 6, and 24 hours after reperfusion

In order to enable accurate and efficient rice quality evaluation through full-surface defect detection of brown rice, a detection system based on convolutional neural network (CNN) was developed. A dataset of images of five categories-unhulled, normal, broken, cracked, and insect-bitten brown rice-was collected. Three CNN models, YOLOv5s, YOLOv7, and Faster R-CNN, were evaluated and compared with traditional algorithms including support vector machine (SVM) and back propagation (BP) neural networks. Experimental results showed that CNN-based methods in the present database significantly outpe

Data-hungry neuro-AI modelling requires ever larger neuroimaging datasets. CNeuroMod-THINGS meets this need by capturing neural representations for a wide set of semantic concepts using well-characterized images in a new densely-sampled, large-scale fMRI dataset. Importantly, CNeuroMod-THINGS exploits synergies between two existing projects: the THINGS initiative (THINGS) and the Courtois Project on Neural Modelling (CNeuroMod). THINGS has developed a common set of thoroughly annotated images broadly sampling natural and man-made objects which is used to acquire a growing collection of multimo

Margin pathological assessment provides critical feedback for breast-conserving surgery, whereas H&E-stained histopathology focuses on residual tumor and may cause unnecessary resections. Label-free multiphoton microscopy (MPM) reveals tumor-associated collagen signatures (TACS) at the margin, offering a prognostically relevant diagnostic information. However, limited familiarity of novel MPM images by pathologists has prevented its integration into diagnostic workflows. Here, we introduce MarginPath, a Margin Pathological diagnosis system built on an MPM-language model that requires only a si

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, particularly preeclampsia, are associated with increased risk of postpartum cardiovascular complications. We report a case of a 43-year-old female with known mild-to-moderate aortic regurgitation and thoracic aortic dilation who developed new left ventricular systolic dysfunction shortly after cesarean delivery for severe preeclampsia. On postoperative day three, she presented with chest pain and was found to have a reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (43%) on transthoracic echocardiography. Computed tomography angiography excluded aortic dissection

Multimodal optical microscopy has recently converged with artificial intelligence (AI) to enable in silico labelling-the computational prediction of fluorescence-like molecular contrast from label-free measurements. Fluorescence plays a crucial role in linking microscopy and spectroscopy at molecular level, enabling image formation by means of linear and non-linear investigation modalities. Over the past two decades, fluorescence optical microscopy has progressed into optical nanoscopy and single molecule localisation methods that operate at the nano- and even Ångstrom level under ambient cond

Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, remains one of the leading infectious causes of non-ischemic cardiomyopathy worldwide. Although an estimated 6-7 million individuals are chronically infected, 20-30% will develop Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCM), a progressive myocardial disease characterised by conduction abnormalities, ventricular arrhythmias, focal aneurysm formation, diffuse fibrosis, and heart failure. Cardiac involvement often evolves silently over decades, and conventional clinical markers frequently underestimate early myocardial injury. Advances in cardiac imaging have fundament

BACKGROUND: Ventricular septal rupture (VSR) is a rare, potentially fatal consequence of blunt cardiac injury (BCI). Concomitant right ventricular (RV) pseudoaneurysm formation is even rarer, and the occurrence of both complications has not to our knowledge been previously reported.
CASE SUMMARY: A 63-year-old man presented with a VSR and a torn tricuspid chord, flail leaflet, and severe tricuspid regurgitation after BCI due to a motor vehicle accident. He declined surgery initially and presented a month later with severe heart failure symptoms. Imaging at that time demonstrated a persistent

BACKGROUND: Lupus erythematosus (LE) is a spectrum of autoimmune diseases. Due to the complexity of cutaneous LE (CLE), clinical skin image-based artificial intelligence is still experiencing difficulties in distinguishing subtypes of LE.
OBJECTIVES: We aim to develop a multimodal deep learning system (MMDLS) for human-AI collaboration in diagnosis of LE subtypes.
METHODS: This is a multi-centre study based on 25 institutions across China to assist in diagnosis of LE subtypes, other eight similar skin diseases and healthy subjects. In total, 446 cases with 800 clinical skin images, 3786 mult

Electrophysiological tests have proved to be a valuable method in assessing multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. In the last few years, scalp recorded short latency somatosensory evoked potentials to stimulation of nerves in the "lower extremity" have been more and more extensively employed. Some studies have aimed at comparing the sensitivity of MR imaging and multimodality evoked potentials, with somewhat conflicting results. In the present study posterior tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (ptnSEPs) were performed in 29 MS patients with the aim to investigate the ability in revealing

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide. Cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs), including strokes and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), cause long-term disabilities and economic burdens. Strokes can be ischemic, caused by blood clots; or hemorrhagic, caused by bleeding in the brain. Immediate diagnosis and treatment are crucial. Proper management of TIAs is essential due to the high risk of subsequent strokes. Currently, wearable sensors, AI-based prediction, and automatic video analysis are not used in CVD diagnosis and recovery estimation.
