[Muscles of the below-knee amputees].

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to review anatomical, histological and physiological muscle changes following below-knee amputation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched the PubMed and Reedoc databases for studies evaluating modifications of the below-knee stump and changes over time in its anatomy, volume and histology. We also looked at postamputation modifications in gait and balance. RESULTS: Below-knee amputees show muscular atrophy on both the amputated side and nonamputated side, with fewer and smaller muscle fibres (particularly slow-twitch fibres). This amyotrophy varies i

[Clinical applications of the comprehensive theory of urinary incontinence].

Currently, urinary incontinence cannot be treated without taking into consideration the comprehensive theory of urinary incontinence. According to this theory, stress incontinence, urge incontinence and alterations in bladder emptying result from alterations in the elements of suburethral support, ligaments and muscles of the pelvis floor. Alterations in the forces applied by muscles and ligaments to the fascia adjacent to the vaginal wall and the urethra cause the vesical neck and the urethra to open or close. Alterations in the forces applied to the vagina can also cause premature activation

Identification of genes that are differentially expressed in extraocular and limb muscle.

The extraocular muscles (EOM) are anatomically and physiologically distinct from other striated muscles in mammals. Among other differences, they can be driven to generate individual twitch contractions at an extremely high frequency and are resistant to [Ca(2+)]-induced myonecrosis. While EOM are preferentially targeted in some neuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis and congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles, they are enigmatically spared in Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, despite the widespread damage seen in all other skeletal muscle groups during the course of this disease

Muscle damage and endurance events.

Intensive training for and competition in endurance events like the marathon are accompanied by injury to fibres in the active skeletal muscles. Evidence for the injury comes from the increases in intramuscular enzymes and myoglobin found in the blood following the exercise, from the subjective sensation of soreness in the muscles in the post-exercise period, and from direct histological examination of samples of the damaged muscles. Histological studies demonstrate that some muscle fibres undergo degenerative changes following the exercise; the necrosis is accomplished by macrophages and othe

Muscle Recovery and Myofibrillar Protein Synthesis after Damaging Exercise with Recombinant Bovine β-Lactoglobulin, Dairy-Derived Whey or Carbohydrate Supplementation in Young Healthy Adults.

BACKGROUND: Supplementation with recombinant bovine β-lactoglobulin (rBLG), a precision-engineered mimetic of dairy-derived whey, supports similar resistance exercise (RE) training-induced muscle remodeling to whey protein (WHEY). However, the influence of rBLG on recovery indices and muscle protein synthesis rates after damaging exercise is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To determine the influence of rBLG supplementation on indices of muscle recovery and integrated myofibrillar protein synthesis (iMyoPS) over 72 h following damaging RE, compared with WHEY and a carbohydrate placebo. METHODS: In a ran

Protein Profiles for Muscle Development and Intramuscular Fat Accumulation at Different Post-Hatching Ages in Chickens.

Muscle development and growth influences the efficiency of poultry meat production, and is closely related to deposition of intramuscular fat (IMF), which is crucial in meat quality. To clarify the molecular mechanisms underlying muscle development and IMF deposition in chickens, protein expression profiles were examined in the breast muscle of Beijing-You chickens at ages 1, 56, 98 and 140 days, using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ). Two hundred and four of 494 proteins were expressed differentially. The expression profile at day 1 differed greatly from those at

Functional and morphological skeletal muscle abnormalities correlate with reduced electromyographic activity in chronic heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Exercise intolerance and early muscle fatigue are key symptoms in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). In advanced stages of the disease, profound metabolic abnormalities have been described finally leading to a catabolic state with progressive loss of muscle bulk. The aim of this study was to investigate morphological, functional and electromyographical parameters of the skeletal muscle in CHF. METHODS: We included 17 patients with CHF and 12 age-matched healthy controls (left ventricular ejection fraction 25+/-2 versus 68+/-1%, body mass index 26.6+/-0.8 versus 28.0+/-1.0

Myosin heavy chain isoform expression in rat smooth muscle development.

Smooth muscle myosin heavy chains (MHCs), the motor proteins that power smooth muscle contraction, are produced by alternative splicing from a single gene. The smooth muscle MHC gene is capable of producing four isoforms by utilizing alternative splice sites located at the regions encoding the carboxy terminus and the junction of the 25- and 50-kDa tryptic peptides. These four isoforms, SM1A, SM1B, SM2A, and SM2B, are a combination of one of two heavy chains containing different carboxy-terminal tails (1 or 2) without (A) or with (B) an additional motif in the myosin head. In the present study

Muscle fiber conduction velocity in the vastus lateralis and medialis muscles of soccer players after ACL reconstruction.

The neural factors underlying the persistency of quadriceps weakness after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) have been only partially explained. This study examined muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) as an indirect parameter of motor unit recruitment strategies in the vastus lateralis (VL) and medialis (VM) muscles of soccer players with ACLR. High-density surface electromyography (HDsEMG) was acquired from VL and VM in nine soccer players (22.7 ± 2.9 years; BMI: 22.08 ± 1.72 kg·m-2 ; 7.7 ± 2.2 months post-surgery). Evaluation of linear and non-linear activation dynamics models for insect muscle.

In computational modelling of sensory-motor control, the dynamics of muscle contraction is an important determinant of movement timing and joint stiffness. This is particularly so in animals with many slow muscles, as is the case in insects-many of which are important models for sensory-motor control. A muscle model is generally used to transform motoneuronal input into muscle force. Although standard models exist for vertebrate muscle innervated by many motoneurons, there is no agreement on a parametric model for single motoneuron stimulation of invertebrate muscle. Although several different

Isovolumic relaxation period in man.

Isovolumic relaxation period (IRP) was measured noninvasively from the onset of the aortic component of the second heart sound on the phonocardiogram to the point of separation of the mitral leaflets on the echocardiogram. IRP was measured in 83 patients with different cardiac diseases. The duration of IRP was 58 +/- 11 msec. in normal subjects. It was prolonged in hypertension (p < 0.001), HOCM (p < 0.001), in aortic stenosis (p < 0.05), and aortic incompetence (p < 0.001), and was shortened in congestive cardiomyopathyl (p < 0.05) and mitral stenosis (p < 0.01). The variability in neurological deficits in Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients may be explained by differences in dystrophin glycoprotein complexes in the brain and muscle.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive genetic neuromuscular disorder. The variability in neurologic deficits in DMD patients may be explained by the fact that (1) dystrophin containing complexes in the brain are more stable than dystrophin containing complexes in the muscle (2) neurons are not affected by the same stresses as muscle and (3) neurons have a greater capacity to buffer increases in intracellular calcium levels. In the muscle, the loss of dystrophin and subsequent loss of dystrophin-associated proteins (DAPs) affects the stability of the dystrophin-glycoprotein

Non-invasive monitoring of muscle blood perfusion by photoplethysmography: evaluation of a new application.

AIM: To evaluate a specially developed photoplethysmographic (PPG) technique, using green and near-infrared light sources, for simultaneous non-invasive monitoring of skin and muscle perfusion. METHODS: Evaluation was based on assessments of changes in blood perfusion to various provocations, such as post-exercise hyperaemia and hyperaemia following the application of liniment. The deep penetrating feature of PPG was investigated by measurement of optical radiation inside the muscle. Simultaneous measurements using ultrasound Doppler and the new PPG application were performed to elucidate dif

Pharmacological weight loss with incretin-based therapies does not result in a disproportionate loss of muscle mass or function in obese mice and humans.

The new generation of incretin-based therapies are potent anti-obesity medications (AOMs) that offer the first non-surgical treatment for 936 million patients globally suffering from being overweight or obese[1]. However, clinical data suggest that incretin-mimetics could cause a disproportionate decrease in lean body mass (LBM) [2, 3], raising a concern for deterioration of skeletal muscle and acceleration of sarcopenic obesity[4]. Unfortunately, muscle mass and function are not routinely assessed in obesity studies and original data on the matter remains sparse. In this work, we conducted va

Effect of Allogenic Mesenchymal Stem Cell Injection on Functional Repair Outcomes Following Skeletal Muscle Laceration Injury.

Background: Skeletal muscle laceration injuries remain a clinical challenge owing to limited and often delayed functional recovery. Surgical repair often fails to fully restore injured muscle, causing fibrosis and functional impairments. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represent a potential therapy due to their regenerative and immunomodulatory properties. However, their short-term regenerative effects in laceration injuries remain under-explored. Objective: We aim to evaluate the short-term effects of allogenic bone marrow-derived MSCs on skeletal muscle regeneration following laceration injury
