Transcultural analysis of postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression (PPD) strikes about 1 in 10 Western women. Studies of Western women have demonstrated that this emotional experience can occur during pregnancy and/or after delivery, and even in women who adopt an infant. Is PPD a universal experience or a morbid condition that is culture specific to Western/industrialized countries? The purpose of this literature review was to examine other cultures to ascertain whether PPD is a universal experience. The literature describes women throughout the world experiencing degrees of sadness postnatally, which persist up to 1 year. The risk fact

Preserving breastfeeding for the rehospitalized infant: a clinical pathway.

The benefits of feeding newborns with human milk are well established. Unfortunately some hospital practices do not support successful breastfeeding; practices such as early hospital discharge after birth, lack of appropriate follow-up primary care providers, and lack of access to breastfeeding support services can contribute to breastfeeding failure, as well as morbidity and mortality in the infant. Infants experiencing breastfeeding difficulties are sometimes admitted to the hospital with diagnoses such as hyperbilirubinemia/jaundice, dehydration/hypernatremia, rule out sepsis, and weight lo

Giving information on compression to patients with venous leg ulcers.

Venous leg ulceration is a common condition that is more likely to affect the elderly (Alexander House Group, 1992; Coupe and Walukiewicz, 2000) and often has a psychological, as well as physical, impact on the individual (Charles, 1995). Many of those affected are cared for within the community (Maylor, 2002) and may become isolated because of the difficulties caused by their condition (Charles, 1995). Compression bandaging therapy has been shown as an effective treatment for venous leg ulcers (Loftus and Wheatley, 2000) but the bandages must be worn continually during treatment and therefore

Healthcare professionals' knowledge of motor neurone disease.

Healthcare professionals have a professional duty to provide patients with accurate information in order to assist in managing their illness. This may be more difficult with an uncommon illness, such as motor neurone disease (MND), as many healthcare professionals may feel poorly informed about the illness themselves. This study set out to survey the level of knowledge and understanding about MND among a group of 100 healthcare professionals who had personal experience of managing the care of a person with MND. The value of the MND nurse specialist and the Motor Neurone Disease Association as

Maternal bacterial vaginosis and fetal/infant mortality in eight Florida counties, 1999 to 2000.

This study determined the prevalence of maternal bacterial vaginosis (BV) in fetal/infant mortality cases and factors associated with BV. A retrospective descriptive study was utilized. Data were obtained from review of vital statistics and medical records of 176 women experiencing fetal/infant deaths in eight Florida counties, 1999 to 2000. Non-White mothers accounted for 68.96% of deaths (chi square = 10.119, df = 4, p = 0.038), although the population of the eight counties was 64% White. Of 121 non-White mothers (68.8%) with infections, 37 (30.6%) had BV. Most fetal/infant deaths (39.7%) oc

Anger expression and blood pressure in adolescents.

The clinical significance of childhood hypertension is important as elevated pressures during childhood are found to follow a progressively increasing track into adulthood. Little work has been done to examine the relationship of emotions and emotional behavioral factors to the development of hypertension in children. Using the Roy Adaptation Model as a guide, this study investigated the relationship of anger expression and blood pressure (BP) among adolescents 16-18 years of age. Participants were 63 urban high school seniors. Measurements included the Anger Expression Inventory, a Demographi

Restraint use and lower extremity fractures in frontal motor vehicle collisions.

BACKGROUND: Seat belts and air bags have been shown to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality following MVCs. Research suggests that restraint use does not protect against lower extremity fracture; however, no population-based studies of this association exist. The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of combined seat belt and airbag restraint systems with airbag alone, seat belt alone, and no restraints with respect to incidence and location of lower extremity fractures. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of front seat occupants involved in police-reported, tow-away fro

Win-win-win: collaboration advances critical care practice.

Against a background of increasing interest in education post registration, New Zealand nurses are working to advance their professional practice. Because the acquisition of highly developed clinical capabilities requires a combination of nursing experience and education, collaboration between clinicians and nurse educators is essential. However, the accessibility of relevant educational opportunities has been an ongoing issue for nurses outside the country's main centres. Within the framework of a Master of Health Science, the postgraduate certificate (critical care nursing) developed between

Chronic wound caring ... a long journey toward healing.

Healthcare professionals use words like "frustrating," "expensive," and "time-consuming" to describe chronic wound care. Healing a wound that has been present for an extended period of time is difficult. Often the problem is not just the wound but also the "woundedness" of the individual with the wound. The patient's needs in chronic wound care often continue over months, years, or even a lifetime. This article addresses more than the wound--it offers healthcare professionals' accounts of patient stories and their active involvement in the long journey toward chronic wound healing.

Seroprevalence of varicella zoster virus, parvovirus B19 and Toxoplasma gondii in a Melbourne obstetric population: implications for management.

At an antenatal clinic at a Melbourne obstetric hospital, 308 women were questioned about a known past history of infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV), human parvovirus B19 and Toxoplasma gondii. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations were determined for the 3 infectious agents and a recalled history of infection was compared with the presence of specific antibody. Exactly 66% of women recalled being infected with chickenpox (VZV) and 94% showed serological evidence of past exposure. Although 64% of women had parvovirus specific IgG, only one gave a definite history of past parvovirus in
