OBJECTIVE: We investigated the feasibility of open heart surgery with combined central vascular surgery and present the results from 9 years of experience.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of a total of nine patients, eight received coronary artery bypass grafting and one patient aortic valve replacement. Concerning vascular surgery a replacement of the brachiocephalic trunk using a Dacron prosthesis as an end-to-end anastomosis or as a bifurcations prosthesis was performed. Two patients underwent additional ipsilateral desobliteration of the internal carotid artery.

BACKGROUND: In 1975, Dixson reported that anti-platelet IgG on platelets from patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is greater than in normal people, by determining anti-platelet antibodies directly on the platelet surface with a quantitative complement lysis-inhibition-assay. Since then, platelet-associated IgG (PAIgG) has been thought of as evidence of ITP. Although platelets from ITP patients show significantly higher PAIgG values than from normal control individuals, PAIgG is not specific for autoantibody because it increases in other than immune ITP patients.

Although epilepsy and mental retardation are commonly observed in individuals with chromosomal aberrations, the identification of EEG/epileptic profiles in those with specific chromosome anomalies remains difficult. Miglustat is an orally administered ceramide glucosyltransferase inhibitor which prevents the lysosomal accumulation of glucocerebroside that occurs in patients with Gaucher's disease. In noncomparative trials in patients with type 1 Gaucher's disease, miglustat (50 or 100mg three times daily) for 6-12 months significantly reduced baseline liver and spleen volumes. At both 6 and 12 months, the reductions in organ volumes were greater with the higher dosage. In the last eight years, 60 patients with carcinoma of the prostate in an advanced stage underwent transrectal ultrasound examinations of the prostate both before and after treatment with LHRH analogues, alone or associated with antiandrogens. In 56 patients with multiple trauma with ISSs > or = 33 we prospectively collected data of seven scoring systems (ISS, TS, TRISS, GCS, PTS, APACHE II, SSS) and sequentially determined blood lactate concentrations. Thirty-seven cases of renal pelvic and ureteral tumors treated at our hospitals between January, 1975 and December, 1985 were reviewed. ST-T isointegral analysis of body surface mapping was used in an attempt to localize ischemic areas on exercise tests. INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic patient education (TPE) is a key component in the management of asthma. This study aims to assess the impact of TPE on disease control, treatment adherence, lung function, and the frequency of hospitalizations and emergency visits.
METHODS: A pilot study followed by an interventional study was conducted on 47 asthmatic patients at CHU Issaad Hassani in Algiers. The participants attended TPE sessions and were evaluated at multiple time points: T0 (before TPE), T4 (4 weeks), T8 (8 weeks), T12 (12 weeks), and T24 (24 weeks).
