Presentation and management of symptomatic central bone cement embolization.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: With more cement augmentation procedures done, the occurrence of serious complications is also expected to rise. Symptomatic central cement embolization is a rare but very serious complication. Moreover, the pathophysiology and treatment of intrathoracic cement embolism remain controversial. PURPOSE: In this case series, we are trying to identify various presentations and suggest our emergent management scheme for symptomatic central cement embolization. PATIENT SAMPLE: Retrospective case series of nine patients with symptomatic central cement embolism identified after ve

Post-Extubation Recall of Thirst During Mechanical Ventilation Among Intensive Care Unit Patients: A Conventional Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In ICU patients, particularly after extubation, thirst is a common and troubling symptom. Although earlier research has focused mainly on quantifying thirst severity and its clinical correlates, less is known about the subjective experiences of patients, including their emotional responses, sense of helplessness, help-seeking actions, and the challenges they face in obtaining relief within the ICU. Therefore, this study aimed to examine how post-extubation ICU patients experience thirst and the strategies they use to manage or alleviate it. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between J

Machine Learning Model for Readmission Prediction of Patients With Heart Failure Based on Electronic Health Records: Protocol for a Quasi-Experimental Study for Impact Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Care for patients with heart failure (HF) causes a substantial load on health care systems where a prominent challenge is the elevated rate of readmissions within 30 days following initial discharge. Clinical professionals face high levels of uncertainty and subjectivity in the decision-making process on the optimal timing of discharge. Unwanted hospital stays generate costs and cause stress to patients and potentially have an impact on care outcomes. Recent studies have aimed to mitigate the uncertainty by developing and testing risk assessment tools and predictive models to ident

Clinical characteristics associated with readmission among patients undergoing vascular surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Readmission after a vascular surgery intervention is frequent, costly, and often considered preventable. Vascular surgery outcomes have recently been scrutinized by Medicare because of the high rates of readmission. We determined patient and clinical characteristics associated with readmission in a cohort of vascular surgery patients. METHODS: From 2009 to 2013, the medical records of all patients (n = 2505) undergoing interventions by the vascular surgery service at a single tertiary care institution were retrospectively reviewed. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were

Impact of the multidisciplinary education program in self-care on fatigue in lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer has high mortality rates, with up to 90% of patients dying within one to two years of its onset. It is essential to carry out research to attempt to solve the problems. Most patients suffer serious fatigue resulting from various symptoms and its long-term treatment. Furthermore, the other related complications such as underlying disease, anemia, malnutrition, nausea, and vomiting can reduced tolerance of chemotherapy. Study showed that nurses are the only hospital staff involved in managing fatigue. As it remains unclear to how fatigue should be managed, it is important

Fall risk and cardiovascular outcomes of first-line antihypertensive medications in nursing home residents.

BACKGROUND: Little evidence exists about the comparative effects of first-line antihypertensive medications (i.e., renin-angiotensin-aldosterone converting enzyme inhibitors (RAASi), amlodipine, or thiazide diuretics) in older adults with limited life expectancy. We compared the rates of injurious falls and short-term cardiovascular events between different first-line antihypertensive medication classes in adults receiving care in nursing homes (NH). METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort of Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries receiving care in NHs. Patients newly dispensed first-line an

Patients' perspectives on pulmonary rehabilitation for pulmonary hypertension in high-altitude areas: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hypoxia at high altitudes worsens pulmonary hypertension (PH), leading to earlier symptom onset, more frequent exacerbations, and diminished quality of life. While pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is known to enhance exercise capacity and ease breathlessness, implementing it in high-altitude settings presents a range of multifaceted challenges. Research capturing patients' firsthand experiences with PR in these settings is largely absent. This study explored how PH patients in high-altitude areas currently engage with PR, what barriers they encounter, and what support they nee
