INTRODUCTION: Infection control measures (ICMs) used to mitigate the effects of infectious outbreaks in care homes impact on resident quality of life (QoL). This qualitative proof-of-concept study explored whether the Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit (ASCOT) could feasibly support care home staff in recognising and minimising these impacts.
METHODS: There were two phases involving online interviews with six care home managers/deputies from five homes who had managed notifiable outbreak(s) in the previous six months in two regions of England. Phase 1, using an incident analysis approach, exp

BACKGROUND: Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are often asymptomatic; however, if they rupture, they have a mortality of 81%.
METHODS: This project, completed as part of the author's Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program requirements, evaluated the implementation of a point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) screening protocol involving in-office AAA screenings using a handheld ultrasound device. The purpose of this project was to examine whether POCUS would increase adherence to AAA screening guidelines in the primary care setting.
RESULTS: POCUS AAA screening increased adherence to screening gu

BackgroundPeer support is an important intervention to achieve increased quality of life for people with HIV. We set out to understand the perceptions and experiences of HIV nurses with peer support in the Netherlands.MethodsWe conducted 21 semi-structured interviews which were analysed using thematic analysis.ResultsRegarding referral to peer support services, we found that nurses favoured patients with the larger presumed burden of living with HIV. Nurses identified logistical and personal barriers with referrals: additional workload, lack of belief in peer support programs, concerns about t

INTRODUCTION: Long-term home nursing care is care for patients who do not qualify for inpatient treatment, and for various reasons are unable or unwilling to receive care in long-term facilities. Patients receiving such care are of various ages, with varying degrees of disabilities that limit their independent functioning. Their condition is caused by chronic diseases, traffic accidents or genetic diseases. In many cases, in a short period of time they turn from being professionally, socially active people to becoming dependent on third parties. Acceptance of one's own illness can reduce the n

This study examined associations of COVID-19 mortality rates, staffing, and resident behavior with changes in antidementia and psychotropic medication initiation among nursing home (NH) residents with dementia. A nationally representative survey of Directors of Nursing was analyzed to assess changes in medication initiation at the peak of the pandemic. NHs with higher COVID-19 mortality rates were less likely to report increases in antidementia medication initiation. COVID-19 mortality rates were not associated with significant increases or decreases in psychotropic initiation. NH's that repor

Adult day services centers (ADSCs) play an important role in long-term services and supports (LTSS), but no studies have examined ADSC nursing staff turnover. This study estimates full-time nursing aide turnover rates and examines ADSC provider characteristics associated with turnover using the 2018 National Post-Acute and Long-term Care Study, a nationally representative sample of 672 ADSCs in the United States. The average turnover percent for aides was 18.5% (range: 0-60%). Attending care plan meetings often was associated with a 6% lower aide turnover rate (95% CI: -11 to - 0.74). A higher

OBJECTIVES: Behavioral health needs are highly prevalent among individuals receiving long-term services and supports (LTSS), yet palliative care (PC) models in these settings often underemphasize psychiatric symptom management. This study explores interdisciplinary staff perspectives on behavioral health as a core domain of PC across nursing home and Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) sites.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a multi-site survey assessing PC needs across 13 LTSS sites within a large health system in New York State. We examined 5 survey items relat

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive analyses of COVID-19 case fatality rates (CFRs) and infection fatality rates (IFRs) that span the entire pandemic are not yet available but critical to retrospectively evaluate the COVID-19 disease burden and its related public health policies. We used nationwide individual participant data from Austria, the continental country with the highest SARS-CoV-2 testing rate per capita, to calculate COVID-19 CFR and estimate IFR covering the entire pandemic.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study included all Austrian residents and covered the time from February 20

The treatment of individuals with psychiatric disorders who visit the Emergency Department (ED) remains a significant issue within healthcare organisations. Over the past decades, various organisational solutions have been proposed, ranging from dedicated Emergency Departments to liaison mechanisms involving mental health nurses within EDs or direct access to acute units. On one hand, there are clinical and organisational needs pushing towards the creation of dedicated pathways; on the other hand, there are concerns that such solutions may be counterproductive and dangerous in terms of health

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disproportionately affects communities with limited access to screening and preventive care. While programs such as the Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) and the Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP) have demonstrated the feasibility of community-based kidney health initiatives, a gap remains in nurse-led models that explicitly leverage the expertise of registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) combined with quality improvement principles. The Community Kidney Health Network (CKHN) was piloted to evaluate the feasibility and scalab

BACKGROUND: Healthcare teams rely on interprofessional collaboration (IPC) to improve patient outcomes, yet students often struggle to grasp the importance of interprofessional education (IPE). The University of Louisiana at Lafayette developed IPHE 310, an interprofessional course for Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Health Information Management (HIM) students, aligning with Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) guidelines. Despite curricular revisions, student evaluations revealed ongoing confusion about the relevance of interprofessional education (IPE) and a disconnect

Rapid online education is essential to equip nurses with new knowledge, such as how to care for incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD). We evaluated the effect of an online educational program on nurses' knowledge of IAD through a pretest-posttest study, examining how it changed nurses' IAD knowledge. Our 15-item knowledge test contained four categories: 1. IAD pathophysiology, 2. IAD identification and management, 3. Differences between IAD and pressure injuries, and 4. Visual vignettes. We recruited 73 nurses from January 2022 to October 2022 in a Singapore tertiary hospital. Mean baseline

BACKGROUND: Although sepsis remains a medical emergency, there is no standard test for diagnosing it. Current sepsis management guidelines strongly recommend screening for sepsis but do not identify a specific tool to use.
OBJECTIVE: To summarize the evidence for sepsis screening tools and triggers, identify the current tools used, and describe their effectiveness.
METHODS: A review of the literature from January 2019 through June 2024 was performed. Studies were included if they described sepsis screening tools used for adults in the emergency department or adult inpatients, including inten
