Global health leadership training in resource-limited settings: a collaborative approach by academic institutions and local health care programs in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Due to a limited health workforce, many health care providers in Africa must take on health leadership roles with minimal formal training in leadership. Hence, the need to equip health care providers with practical skills required to lead high-impact health care programs. In Uganda, the Afya Bora Global Health Leadership Fellowship is implemented through the Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) and her partner institutions. Lessons learned from the program, presented in this paper, may guide development of in-service training opportunities to enhance leadership

Living and dying: responsibility for end-of-life care in care homes without on-site nursing provision - a prospective study.

The aim of the study was to describe the expectations and experiences of end-of-life care of older people resident in care homes, and how care home staff and the healthcare practitioners who visited the care home interpreted their role. A mixed-method design was used. The everyday experience of 121 residents from six care homes in the East of England were tracked; 63 residents, 30 care home staff with assorted roles and 19 National Health Service staff from different disciplines were interviewed. The review of care home notes demonstrated that residents had a wide range of healthcare problems.

Clinical evaluation of TIELLE* Plus dressing in the management of exuding chronic wounds.

This clinical evaluation, which was carried out between May 2000 and January 2001, measured the efficacy and safety of TIELLE* Plus dressing, a novel hydropolymer dressing with super-absorbent properties. In total 2121 patients with leg ulcers (59.1%), pressure ulcers (20.7%), diabetic foot ulcers (10.9%) or other chronic wounds (9.4%) were included in the study. These were recruited by 624 physicians in a German post-marketing study. All wounds had been present for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment with TIELLE* Plus dressings and many had been treated with other dressings previously. Within

The experience of parenting an adolescent with spina bifida.

Parents of adolescents with spina bifida (SB) face unique challenges of which they may not be aware. The purpose of this study was to heighten awareness of the challenge of parenting such adolescents. This enhanced understanding can help rehabilitation professionals optimize their interventions with families. In this qualitative study, which was part of a larger mixed-method descriptive investigation exploring adaptation by adolescents with SB, we used content analysis to evaluate 20 parent interviews for common domain, themes, and subthemes. The analysis yielded four major domains: (a) daily

Study of the effects of education on patients' knowledge and acceptance of their indwelling urethral catheters.

A randomized controlled trial was undertaken to test the effects of an education programme, which included an information booklet, on patients' knowledge and acceptance of their indwelling urethral catheters. A total of 45 patients participated, all of whom were either established or new catheter users. Data were collected at pretest, test and follow-up visits. The information booklet and researcher were found to significantly influence patients' knowledge and acceptance of their catheters. The findings are discussed with a number of conclusions drawn and recommendations for current practice.

Evaluating the efficacy of rapid diagnostic tests for imported malaria in high income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a life-threatening disease. Prior to the pandemic, over a million people annually from non-endemic, high income countries such as Europe and North America visited countries with a risk of malaria transmission. Emergency care nurses in non-endemic countries frequently encounter returning travellers, presenting with symptoms suggestive of malaria. While rapid diagnostic tests are used in countries with endemic malaria, in countries such as the United Kingdom diagnosis is undertaken by microscopy and three negative tests are required to exclude. QUESTION: Are rapid diagnos

Association of Nurses in AIDS Care Position on Breastfeeding and Chestfeeding: Ensuring Equity, Autonomy, Access, and Respect in HIV-Related Infant Feeding Decisions.

People with HIV (PWH) have the right to make informed, supported decisions about infant feeding, including breastfeeding or chestfeeding. This position statement from the ANAC affirms the importance of access, equity, autonomy, and respect in lactation counseling and care. Evidence-based clinical guidelines now support shared decision making for PWH on antiretroviral therapy with sustained viral suppression, with studies showing a transmission risk of less than 1% through human milk. Despite this, stigma, inconsistent provider messaging, and punitive threats persist, particularly for marginali

A Rapid Review on the Management of Constipation for Hospice and Palliative Care Patients.

Constipation is a distressing symptom that has a high prevalence in patients receiving hospice and palliative care services, particularly in cases of opioid use. A thorough assessment, root cause analysis, monitoring, and prophylactic approach are essential for symptom management and quality of life. This rapid review assessed studies published between 2018 and 2023 to identify strategies implemented by health care professionals to prevent and/or mitigate this distressing symptom. We identified 12 articles that addressed constipation in palliative and end-of-life settings and reported on the n

Abdominal massage and laxative use for constipation: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Constipation is a very frequent condition. Pharmacological treatment leads to the onset of complications in the long term. AIM: To study the effects of abdominal massage and bowel training combined with polyethene glycol compared with laxative alone. Researchers studied the frequency of evacuations, use of laxatives, appetite, and food intake of older persons. In addition, feasibility in the daily routine of nursing care was studied. METHODS: A pilot, randomised controlled trial was conducted. Older people living in a facility for self-sufficient residents were enrolled and rando

Meta-Analysis of Medication Administration Errors in African Hospitals.

The incidence of medication administration errors (MAEs) and associated patient harm continue to plague hospitals worldwide. Moreover, there is a lack of evidence to address this problem, especially in Africa. This research synthesis was intended to provide current evidence to decrease the incidence of MAEs in Africa. Standardized search criteria were used to identify primary studies that reported the incidence and/or predictors of MAEs in Africa. Included studies met specifications and were validated with a quality-appraisal tool. The pooled incidence of MAEs in African hospitals was estimate
