Serotypes, Virulence-Associated Factors, and Antimicrobial Resistance of Streptococcus suis Isolates Recovered From Sick and Healthy Pigs Determined by Whole-Genome Sequencing.

Streptococcus suis is ubiquitous in swine, and yet, only a small percentage of pigs become clinically ill. The objective of this study was to describe the distribution of serotypes, virulence-associated factor (VAF), and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in S. suis isolates recovered from systemic (blood, meninges, spleen, and lymph node) and non-systemic (tonsil, nasal cavities, ileum, and rectum) sites of sick and healthy pigs using whole-genome sequencing. In total, 273 S. suis isolates recovered from 112 pigs (47 isolates from systemic and 136 from non-systemic sites of 65 sick pigs; 90

Promoting Attachment Through Healing (PATH): Results of a retrospective feasibility study providing trauma-and-violence-informed care to pregnant women.

AIM: To evaluate the impact of a trauma and violence-informed cognitive behavioural therapy (TVICBT) intervention, compared with standard care on mental health, coping, bonding and maternal-infant attachment among pregnant women with a history of intimate partner violence and who displayed symptomatology consistent with anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). DESIGN: A mixed-methods case study design was employed, where women either received standard perinatal care or were referred to a specialized TVICBT program. METHODS: Data were collected through a retrospective obs

Association of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis and cardiovascular events: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) is implicated in elevating the risk for cardiovascular (CV) disease; whether the elevated risk applies to all types of CV diseases or specific types is unclear. This study examined the association of AAV and adverse CV outcomes compared with the non-AAV population. METHODS: We conducted a population-based, retrospective cohort study of adults (mean age 61 years, 51% female) with a new diagnosis of AAV in Ontario, Canada from 2007 to 2017. Weighted models were used to examine the association of AAV (n = 1520) a

Association of Sex With Stroke and Bleeding Risk of Apixaban and Rivaroxaban in Elderly Atrial Fibrillation Patients Using Propensity Score Weights.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from clinical trials suggests a differential effect of sex on the effectiveness and safety of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for stroke prophylaxis in atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: This population-based cohort study examined the independent effect of sex on hemorrhage and ischemic stroke in 23,884 patients (55% females; age ≥ 66 years) with AF starting apixaban or rivaroxaban treatment in Ontario, Canada. Patients were followed for 90 days after their DOAC prescription. Using female sex as the exposure of interest, differences in baseline characteristics were bal

Comparison between methods for measuring fecal egg count and estimating genetic parameters for gastrointestinal parasite resistance traits in sheep.

Fecal egg count (FEC) is an indicative measurement for parasite infection in sheep. Different FEC methods may show inconsistent results. Not accounting for inconsistencies can be problematic when integrating measurements from different FEC methods for genetic evaluation. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the difference in means and variances between two fecal egg counting methods used in sheep-the Modified McMaster (LMMR) and the Triple Chamber McMaster (LTCM); to estimate variance components for the two FEC methods, treating them as two different traits; and to integrate FEC data

Brain structure and function in people recovering from COVID-19 after hospital discharge or self-isolation: a longitudinal observational study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The detailed extent of neuroinvasion or deleterious brain changes resulting from COVID-19 and their time courses remain to be determined in relation to "long-haul" COVID-19 symptoms. Our objective is to determine whether there are alterations in functional brain imaging measures among people with COVID-19 after hospital discharge or self-isolation. METHODS: This paper describes a protocol for NeuroCOVID-19, a longitudinal observational study of adults aged 20-75 years at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Ontario, that began in April 2020. We aim to recruit 240 adults,

The Impact of COVID-19 on Patients With ADPKD.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) have kidney cysts and kidney enlargement decades before progressing to advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), meaning patients live most of their adult life with a chronic medical condition. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has created common questions among patients with ADPKD. In this review, we discuss COVID-19 concerns centered around a patient with a common clinical vignette. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: We performed PubMed and Google scholar searches for English, peer-reviewed studies relate

Open reduction and internal fixation alone versus open reduction and internal fixation plus total hip arthroplasty for displaced acetabular fractures in patients older than 60 years: A prospective clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: The optimal treatment of elderly patients with an acetabular fracture is unknown. We conducted a prospective clinical trial to compare functional outcomes and reoperation rates in patients older than 60 years with acetabular fracture treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) alone versus ORIF plus concomitant total hip arthroplasty (ORIF + THA). Our hypothesis was that patients who had ORIF + THA would have better patient reported outcomes and lower reoperation rates postoperatively. METHODS: Inclusion criteria were patients older than 60 years with acetabular fra

Lateralized glenosphere reverse shoulder arthroplasty: inlay and onlay designs have similar clinical outcomes in patients with glenohumeral osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Whether or how the position of the humeral tray (inlay or onlay) in reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) affects outcomes is unclear. Our goal was to compare the clinical and radiographic results of RSA systems with inlay vs. onlay designs but with similar neck shaft angles (NSAs) and lateralized glenospheres. METHODS: We screened the institutional database at our tertiary academic center for patients who underwent primary RSA (with a lateralized glenosphere and a 135° NSA) from 2009 through 2017. The indication for surgery was glenohumeral osteoarthritis with glenoid bone loss (Wa

Efficacy of Acupuncture-Related Therapy in the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

OBJECTIVE: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is prevalent in middle-aged and elderly people. This condition negatively affects the quality of life of patients. Although non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often used to relieve symptoms associated with KOA, it is associated with many side effects. Acupuncture and moxibustion therapies have been applied in the treatment of KOA. However, the efficacy of various acupuncture and moxibustion treatments has not been compared. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the application of acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of KOA

Minimum 15-year results of metasul 28-mm metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty in patients younger than 50 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Some propitious mid- and long-term studies had been reported for MoM bearings; however, most studies have addressed specific patient groups rather than younger, active patients, who probably represent the most suitable population for investigations on wear and osteolysis. The purpose of this study to evaluate the long-term results of second-generation metal-on-metal cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients aged <50 years. METHODS: From December 1997 to January 2004, primary THA using a metal-on-metal bearing cementless implant was performed in 63 patients (72 hips) aged
