Prevalence and associations of temporomandibular disorders in older Brazilian adults.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to estimate the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and describe associations in a representative sample of community-dwelling older Brazilian adults. BACKGROUND: TMD cause recurrent or chronic pain and dysfunction with substantial impacts on quality of life, but little is known of their occurrence and associated factors among older adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study using data from the second wave of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging, a nationally representative sample of older Brazilian adults aged 5

Oral cancer analysis in a Brazilian city: interval between diagnosis and treatment.

In Brazil, there are 15,500 incident cases of oral cancer (OC) yearly, and early diagnosis is the main factor for a better prognosis. The objective of this study was to analyze the interval between the first symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment commencement in patients with malignant neoplasms in the oral cavity, lips, and oropharynx diagnosed between 2012-2018. Epidemiological data, duration, history of lesion, biopsy, and diagnosis were obtained from the medical records of these patients, who were then contacted via phone and interviewed about their oncological treatment. The results were anal

A comparative study to assess the effectiveness of curcumin, mucosamin, and chlorhexidine in chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis.

BACKGROUND: Oral mucositis is one of the most frequent and challenging side effects of chemotherapy. At present, none of the guidelines recommend the use of various mouthwashes available for the treatment of oral mucositis. METHODS: This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of curcumin, mucosamin, and chlorhexidine in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis. In this randomized and double-blind study, 71 patients over 18 years, who received chemotherapy and suffered from chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis, were randomized into curcumin, mucosamin, and chlorhexidine groups.

Oral and nasal microbiota in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with neuropathological changes in olfactory and gastrointestinal tissues, and PD patients frequently suffer from hyposmia, hyposalivation, and dysphagia. Since hyposmia and gastrointestinal dysfunction are frequently premotor symptoms, it has been speculated that an external, for example microbial, agent could trigger the pathologic process in the corresponding organs, subsequently spreading to the central nervous system. We recently showed evidence for compositional differences between the fecal microbiota of PD patients and control subject

AI-based applications supporting informal caregivers in childhood caries prevention and management: protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries remains highly prevalent among children despite being preventable. Limited access to dental services, workforce shortages and low oral health literacy among informal caregivers contribute to its delayed detection and poor oral health outcomes for children. As informal caregivers play a vital role in children's daily oral health practices, innovative and scalable approaches are needed to support them. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based mobile health applications could potentially help engage these caregivers in education, early detection, and other preventive activit

Area-Level Factors of Dental Caries in Children and Adolescents in European Neighborhoods - a Systematic Review.

The WHO emphasizes the importance of taking area-level factors into account when formulating public health interventions. The aim of this systematic review was to identify which area-level factors are associated with children's dental caries in Europe and might therefore be a suitable starting point for public health interventions. We conducted a systematic review based on a search in PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library including all European studies on caries in children and their area-level factors published since the year 2000 in English or German. We included 39 studies and identi

Malocclusion Impact Scale for Early Childhood (MIS-EC): development and validation.

This study aimed to develop and validate the Malocclusion Impact Scale for Early Childhood (MIS-EC), a malocclusion-specific measure of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children aged 3-5 years and their parents/caregivers. A pool of items was analysed to identify those relevant to the assessment of the impact of malocclusion on OHRQoL. Dental professionals and mothers of children with and without malocclusion rated the importance of these items. The final version of the MIS-EC was evaluated in a cross-sectional study comprising 381 parents of children aged 3-5 years to assess co

Hypothetical emergence of poliovirus in 2020: part 2. exploration of the potential role of vaccines in control and eradication.

OBJECTIVES: The emergence of human pathogens with pandemic potential motivates rapid vaccine development. We explore the role of vaccines in control and eradication of a novel emerging pathogen. METHODS: We hypothetically simulate emergence of a novel wild poliovirus (nWPV) in 2020 assuming an immunologically naïve population. Assuming different nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), we explore the impacts of vaccines resembling serotype-specific oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), novel OPV (nOPV), or inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV). RESULTS: Vaccines most effectively change the trajectory

[Advances in researches of serotype 2 novel oral polio vaccine].

In April 2016, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) adjusted its polio vaccination strategy, converting trivalent oral polio vaccine (tOPV) into bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV), and withdrawing type 2 oral polio vaccine (OPV2) globally. However, after the withdrawal of OPV2, there were many outbreaks of type-2 circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV2) in Asia and Africa. In order to eradicate poliovirus completely, GPEI launched the research and development of the novel serotype 2 oral polio vaccine (nOPV2) in 2010 and considering whether it is necessary to reuse OPV. This p

The long-term influence of orthodontic treatment on dental knowledge and behaviour: An Australian cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Fixed orthodontic treatment (FOT) typically lasts 14-33 months, with regular appointments at short intervals to monitor changes, adjust appliances, and remotivate patients to maintain excellent oral hygiene standards to prevent dental disease. Past experiences are important influencers of dental attitudes and self-care dental behaviours in adulthood. Since FOT comprises a high frequency of appointments compared to other dental visiting, we hypothesised that previous FOT enhances dental knowledge and behaviour in later life. METHODS: This cohort study followed-up 30-year-old partic

The efficacy of probiotics in management of recurrent aphthous stomatitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

There is currently a lack of effective drugs to cure recurrent aphthous stomatitis. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of probiotics alone or as an adjunct in recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) patients. Seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included, of which three were included in quantitative analysis. Of five studies evaluating the efficacy of probiotics alone compared with placebo or Oracure gel, two reported no significant difference in relieving oral pain, while probiotics exhibited a higher capacity for decreasing oral pain in the other three. A significant decrease in
