Clear aligner treatment of an adult open bite with bilateral missing mandibular first molars through molar protraction with Albert cantilever arms.

Premature loss of first permanent molars is a common occurrence in clinical practice, leading to abnormal occlusion and inefficient mastication for patients. This case report presented the orthodontic retreatment of a 32-year-old female patient who suffered from premature loss of mandibular bilateral first molars. The mesial tipping of the mandibular second molars led to an occlusal interference, resulting in a clockwise rotation of the lower jaw and an anterior open bite (AOB). We achieved long-distance molar mesialization using clear aligners with Albert cantilever arms. After 42 months of t

Guiding atypical facial growth back to normal. Part 2: Causative factors, patient assessment, and treatment planning.

It has been well-documented that the most common factors associated with atypical facial growth involve the airway, which when compromised, leads to mouth breathing and associated aberrant tongue function. The most common changes include downward and backward rotation of the mandible, deficient nasomaxillary complex, a vertical growth pattern, posterior displacement of the TMJ, narrow maxillary arch, dental malocclusions, and dental crowding. It is imperative that clinicians recognize, diagnose, and begin treatment as early as possible when facial growth deviates from normal. Several specific

Eruption disturbances of the maxillary incisors: a literature review.

Eruption disturbances can be broadly classified as disturbances related to time and disturbances related to position. Time related disturbances include premature eruption, delayed eruption or impactions. A common feature of these is a significant deviation in eruption time within the established norms for a particular age, sex, race or ethnicity. Although root development represents the fundamental biologic parameter for tooth eruption, chronological age at presentation is used as the first criteria in the establishment of the diagnosis of prematurity or a delay in eruption. Eruption disturban

Forced eruption of maxillary incisor teeth from the lingual side.

A major disadvantage in using the forced eruption technique is the necessity for the placement of an unesthetic orthodontic appliance, especially when the tooth involved is a maxillary incisor. The aim of this article is to present two alternative simple, specific task-oriented devices that may be placed on the lingual side of the teeth and may be used in the anterior of the mouth without compromising appearance.

A simple appliance for the management of obstructive sleep apnoea--the MEDUNSA Anti-Snoring Device (MASD).

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a breathing abnormality that occurs during sleep. It is characterised by snoring and episodes of sleep disturbance that can occur from 10 to 500 times per night causing excessive daytime exhaustion. A large tongue and a retrognathic mandible have been listed as aetiological factors. Orthodontic appliances that have been used to manage the condition are usually complicated, uncomfortable, expensive and delicate. The aim of this clinical procedure is to design a simple, inexpensive, durable and user-friendly appliance that can be used in the management of OSA. T

[Retraining in dento-facial orthopedics. An orthodontist's viewpoint].

In dentofacial orthopedics, rehabilitation concerns the performance of the orofacial functions. Orthodontists will therefore speak of rehabilitation of functions, or functional therapy. Orofacial functions seem to obey a hierarchical system in accordance with their physiological importance; the impact of their disorders on both muscular behavior and facial morphogenesis, proportionally to their physiological importance. Therefore, priority will be given at a very early stage to the rehabilitation of respiration: restoring nasal ventilation is indeed an essential condition to obtain balanced or
