Periprosthetic Joint Infection in Patients with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) represents a significant obstacle within the realm of orthopedic procedures. Certain medical conditions, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) which causes blockages in the lower urinary system, have been suggested as potential PJI contributing factors. Nevertheless, the available evidence remains inconclusive regarding these associations. For enhancing treatment strategies and ultimately improving results achieved by individuals receiving care, gaining a better understanding of these relationships is imperative. All in accordance with the PRISMA 2020

Assessment of Orthopedic Surgical Implants in Dogs Using 18F-Sodium Fluoride Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography.

Failure of fixation is a potential complication associated with surgical implants, and early detection is important but challenging. Positron emission tomography (PET) has the potential to detect lesions that may exhibit little to no visible findings on other commonly used diagnostic imaging modalities. The aim of this retrospective descriptive study was to assess 18F-Sodium Fluoride (18F-NaF) uptake associated with surgical implants in dogs. Medical records were searched for canine patients with orthopedic metallic implants in place imaged with 18F-NaF PET/CT. PET images were reviewed blinded

Comparative Outcomes of Intramedullary Nailing Versus Plate Fixation in the Management of Both-Bone Forearm Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Both-bone forearm fractures are common orthopedic injuries requiring surgical intervention to restore function and stability. Intramedullary nailing (IMN) and plate fixation (PF) are two widely used techniques for managing these fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 100 patients aged 18-50 years with diaphyseal fractures of the radius and ulna were included in this prospective study. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups: Group A (IMN, n = 50) and Group B (PF, n = 50). Surgical procedures were performed following standard protocols. Postoperative evaluations include

Tibial lengthening with LRS fixator in a pediatric patient with congenital anterolateral bowing: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital anterolateral bowing of the tibia is a rare orthopedic condition that can lead to significant limb length discrepancy (LLD) during growth. Gradual limb lengthening with external fixation remains a reliable method to achieve limb equalization. LRS fixator offers a minimally invasive and adjustable treatment option for pediatric patients considering the growth potential. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 9-year-old boy with a known case of right-sided anterolateral bowing of the tibia, who presented with a 3 cm limb length discrepancy. The patie

Improved Clinical and Radiological Outcomes with Double-Cage Biportal Endoscopic Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion: A Comparative CT-Based Study.

Background/Objectives: When transitioning from an older surgical technique to a newer one, we expect improved treatment outcomes and fewer complications. However, direct comparative studies to confirm these advantages are often lacking. Tubular minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MISTLIF) has been widely used, but limitations in visualization and endplate preparation may compromise fusion quality. Biportal endoscopic TLIF (BETLIF), a more recent alternative, offers enhanced magnification and superior hemostasis. Still, CT-based comparative data on fusion integrity remain

Prophylactic absorbable antibiotic beads for prepectoral implant-based breast reconstruction: A single institution early experience.

Infection after implant-based breast reconstruction remains challenging, with infection rates up to 24%. Best clinical practice indicates prophylactic oral antibiotics are ineffective at preventing infection. Absorbable antibiotic beads have been routinely used in other surgical subspecialties such as orthopedic and vascular procedures for continuous local antibiotic delivery to the surgical site when implants are placed. Biodegradable calcium sulfate antibiotic beads have been shown to normalize incidence of infection when used prophylactically for a high-risk prepectoral patient population.

Comparative analysis of geriatric hip fracture management outcomes in teaching and nonteaching hospitals in Jordan.

Hip fractures are common orthopedic injuries that have significant impacts on patients and healthcare systems. Previous studies have shown varying outcomes for hip fracture management in different settings, with diverse postoperative outcomes and complications. While teaching hospital settings have been investigated, no studies have specifically examined hip fracture outcomes in teaching hospitals in Jordan or the broader Middle East region. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate this important outcome. A cohort comprising 1268 patients who underwent hip fracture fixation from 201

Healthcare Resource Use Associated With Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia: A Literature Review.

CONTEXT: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is an ultra-rare, paraneoplastic syndrome caused by tumors that secrete fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). Initial signs and musculoskeletal symptoms can be nonspecific and unrecognized, leading to long delays in diagnosis and treatment, and resulting in severe and progressive disability in patients with TIO. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to identify published evidence on healthcare resource use in TIO to better understand the burden of the disease. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A targeted literature review was conducted to identify publications reporting o

Inflammatory biomarkers and state of the tibiofemoral joint in the osteoarthritic knee: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: The healing process is initiated by injurious stimuli in response to cellular damage. Upon recruiting proinflammatory biomarkers to the tissue site of injury, the release of additional biomarkers occurs, including the likes of cytokines, matrix molecules, macrophages, neutrophils, and others. This influx of immune system mediators can occur for chronic periods, and though its intention is for healing the original injurious stimuli, it is also suspected of causing long term cartilage impairment following internal structure damage. The objective of this narrative review is to identif

Postsurgical Pyoderma Gangrenosum Requiring Plastic Surgical Intervention: A Practical Review.

Pyoderma gangrenosum is a neutrophilic dermatosis characterized by immune dysfunction and pathergy. Thus, it is frequently seen in patients with underlying systemic illnesses or postoperatively. For the performance of the debridement or closure of the resultant defect, plastic surgeons are often involved in the care of pyoderma patients. However, both procedures may exacerbate the injury. Therefore, plastic surgeons must be familiar with the presentation of postsurgical pyoderma to avoid further damage and safely repair related soft tissue defects. A systematic search of the PubMed/Medline dat

Tranexamic acid use in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is an effective and safe adjunct to improve visualization: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Although tranexamic acid (TXA) is being increasingly used in orthopedic arthroplasty and lower-extremity arthroscopic procedures, its use in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) is less widely reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety of TXA administration in ARCR. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was performed to compare clinical outcomes in patients who underwent ARCR with or without TXA. Literature was retrieved using the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, PubMed, and Embase electronic databases.

Prophylactic Absorbable Antibiotic Beads for High-risk, Implant-based Prepectoral Reconstruction.

Infections are problematic in postmastectomy implant-based reconstruction with infection rates as high as 30%. Strategies to reduce the risk of infection have demonstrated various efficacies. A prolonged course of systemic, oral antibiotics has not shown evidence-based benefit. Although absorbable antibiotic beads have been described for orthopedic procedures and pressure wounds, their use has not been well studied during breast reconstruction, particularly for prepectoral implant placement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the selective use of prophylactic absorbable calcium sulfate

Preoperative Anemia Is Associated With Worse Postoperative Outcomes After Open Reduction Internal Fixation of Distal Radius Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative anemia has been shown to be associated with complications after numerous orthopedic procedures. No studies to our knowledge have examined its impact on outcomes after open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of distal radius fracture (DRF). We hypothesized that patients with preoperative anemia would have increased likelihood of adverse outcomes, and likelihood would increase with severity of anemia. METHODS: A total of 14 136 patients underwent ORIF for DRF over 2012-2021, identified in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. Patients were classifi
