OBJECTIVE: Various reconstructive surgical procedures have been described for lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS) with osteoporotic vertebral collapse (OVC); however, the optimal surgery remains controversial. In this study, the authors aimed to report the clinical and radiographic outcomes of their novel, less invasive, short-segment anteroposterior combined surgery (APCS) that utilized oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) and posterior fusion without corpectomy to achieve decompression and reconstruction of anterior support in patients with LSCS-OVC.
METHODS: In this retrospective study,

UNLABELLED: Lumbar spine trabecular bone score (TBS) can be used to modify the output from the fracture risk assessment tool, FRAX, to enhance fracture prediction. An alternative approach for using TBS in clinical practice, based upon an adjustment to the bone mineral density (BMD) T-score, may be helpful in regions where intervention guidelines and/or reimbursement are primarily based on BMD T-score.
INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to develop an approach for using TBS in clinical practice based upon a "risk-equivalent" adjustment to the BMD T-score.
METHODS: We identified 45,185 wome

SUMMARY: While dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is considered the gold standard to evaluate fracture risk in vivo, in the present study, the quantitative computed tomography (QCT)-based finite element modeling has been found to provide a quantitative and significantly improved prediction of vertebral strength in vitro. This technique might be used in vivo considering however the much larger doses of radiation needed for QCT.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence indicates that Chinese patent medicines can significantly increase bone mass in patients with osteoporosis and alleviate symptoms associated with low bone density. Although the therapeutic effects of these two drugs have been compared both directly and indirectly, no economic-related studies currently exist. Therefore, this study aims to assess the cost-effectiveness of Xianling Gubao Capsules compared to Jintiange Capsules and non-treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis from the perspective of Chinese healthcare providers.
METHODS: A Markov microsimulation model was

BACKGROUND: Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are the most common among all osteoporotic fractures. The body may compensate to the kyphosis from vertebral compression fractures with lordosis of the adjacent spinal segments, rotation of the pelvis, knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion. However, the detailed degree of body compensation, especially the lower limb, remains uncertain. Herein, the aim of this study is to investigate the values of global sagittal alignments (GSA) parameters, including the spine, pelvis and lower limbs, in patients with and without VCFs, as well as to evaluate the

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis may impair fracture healing and fixation durability after ankle ORIF. This study evaluated postoperative complications of preoperative osteoporosis.
METHODS: Patients undergoing ankle ORIF from 2004 to 2022 with ≥ 2 years of follow-up were identified from a multi-institutional database. Those with and without preoperative osteoporosis, defined with ICD-10 code M80 & M81, were compared using 1:1 propensity score matching; outcomes were assessed at 90 days and 2 years.
RESULTS: Matched cohorts included 4190 patients. At 90 days, the osteoporosis group had higher device

Dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with fluorine-18 labelled sodium fluoride ([18F]NaF) allows the quantitative assessment of regional bone formation by measuring the plasma clearance of fluoride to bone at any site in the skeleton. Today, hybrid PET and computed tomography (CT) dual-modality systems (PET/CT) are widely available, and [18F]NaF PET/CT offers a convenient non-invasive method of studying bone formation at the important osteoporotic fracture sites at the hip and spine, as well as sites of pure cortical or trabecular bone. The technique complements conventional meas

A biomechanical test is a good evaluation method that describes the structural, functional, and pathological differences in the bones, such as osteoporosis and fracture. The tensile test, compression test, and bending test are generally performed to evaluate the elastic modulus of the bone using mice. In particular, the femoral head compression test is mainly used for verifying the osteoporosis change of the femoral neck. This study conducted bone mineral density analysis using in vivo microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) to observe changes in osteoporosis over time. It proposed a method of ide

Anorexia nervosa (AN) most often has its onset in adolescence, which is a crucial period to achieve peak bone mass. The hormonal abnormalities (hypoestrogenism, hypercortisolism, decreased secretion of dehydroepiandrosterone, testosterone, insulin-like growth factor) and malnutrition are associated with profound bone mineralization disorders. Densitomertic bone mineral density (BMD) values for osteopenia and osteoporosis were found respectively in 35-98% and 13-50% of women with AN. Prospective studies indicate a further decline in BMD at the beginning of treatment and a crucial importance of

Vitamin C is an important antioxidant and cofactor that is involved in the regulation of development, function, and maintenance of several cell types in the body. Deficiencies in vitamin C can lead to conditions such as scurvy, which, among other ailments, causes gingivia, bone pain, and impaired wound healing. This review examines the functional importance of vitamin C as it relates to the development and maintenance of bone tissues. Analysis of several epidemiological studies and genetic mouse models regarding the effect of vitamin C shows a positive effect on bone health. Overall, vitamin C

Chronic non-terminal diseases, including postmenopausal osteoporosis, are associated with poor treatment compliance and persistence. The longer a patient with osteoporosis complies and persists with treatment, the lower the risk of fracture. Retrospective studies with emphasis on real-world data have led to a greater understanding of the factors affecting medication compliance and persistence, and their association with improved treatment outcomes. However, these data do not contain information about patient choices of medication or patient commitment to particular medication regimens. Patient

Percutaneous vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are being used extensively in the United States for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Although short-term clinical outcomes appear favourable, long-term data are not yet available and it is becoming increasingly important to understand how the underlying biomechanics of the spine are altered by the procedure. In vitro experimental studies have investigated the effect of cement augmentation on individual vertebra and short spinal segments. For individual vertebra, vertebroplasty appears to increase or return strength to th

Raised levels of parathyroid hormones (PTH) predispose to osteoporotic fracture particularly in the elderly. The true prevalence of primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism is unknown, as PTH evaluation is not performed as a screening test in the elderly. We report raised PTH levels in 27 of 190 (14.2%) community living fully mobile postmenopausal women with densitometrically established osteopenia, consuming an average of 645 (+/-191) mg of calcium per day. Twenty-five of the 27 women with raised PTH were normocalcaemic, hypercalcaemia been found only in two. Serum 25 hydroxy vitamin D levels

Vertebroplasty is an effective new radiologic procedure consisting of the percutaneous injection of a biomaterial, usually methyl methacrylate, into a lesion of a vertebral body. This technique allows marked or complete pain relief and bone strengthening in most cases. The principal indications for vertebroplasty are osteolytic metastasis and myeloma, painful or aggressive hemangioma, and osteoporotic vertebral collapse with debilitating pain that persists despite correct medical treatment. Radiography and computed tomography must be performed in the days preceding vertebroplasty to assess the

BACKGROUND: Biomechanical deterioration and low bone mineral density (BMD) are two primary triggers for adjacent vertebral fracture (AVF) after percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) operation. Sandwich vertebral body (SVB) refers to a vertebral body situated between two osteoporotic vertebral compressive fractures (OVCF) segments. There exists a contradiction regarding whether the SVB are at a heightened risk of AVF, and the underlying mechanism has yet to be elucidated.
METHODS: Clinical data of PVP treated OVCF patients were included in this study. Patients were divided into two groups: those w
