INTRODUCTION: Supracondylar femoral osteotomy is the time tested method, used for correcting the angular (varus & valgus) deformities at the knee. Traditionally, Coventry type of femoral osteotomy is performed. Here, a medial or lateral based wedge of bone is removed or an open wedge osteotomy is made & subsequently the space is filled with the bone graft to achieve the desired correction. This osteotomy is subsequently stabilized with Kirschner wires or plate & screws. Later the limb is externally supported in brace or plaster cast till osteotomy unites. Here we present a case series of 10 ca

UNLABELLED: Among the osteotomies performed in orthognathic surgery, the sagittal osteotomy of the mandibular ramus (SOMR) is the most common, allowing a great range of movements and stable internal fixation (SIF), therefore eliminating the need of maxillomandibular block in the postoperative period.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical resistance of three national systems used for SIF in SOMR in sheep mandibles.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was performed in 30 sheep hemi-mandibles randomly divided into 3 experimental groups, each containing 10 hemi-mand

There are no recent studies comparing cable with wire for the fixation of osteotomies or fractures in total hip replacement (THR). Our objective was to evaluate the five-year clinical and radiological outcomes and complication rates of the two techniques. We undertook a review including all primary and revision THRs performed in one hospital between 1996 and 2005 using cable or wire fixation. Clinical and radiological evaluation was performed five years post-operatively. Cables were used in 51 THRs and wires in 126, and of these, 36 THRs with cable (71%) and 101 with wire (80%) were evaluated

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: When a larger opening of high-tibial osteotomy is necessary to achieve good correction of the lower extremity axis, partial release of the attachments of the medial stabilisers of the knee may be required. The aim of the study was to ascertain, in cadaver specimens, the effect of loosening the medial knee stabilisers on the magnitude of correction in medial opening-wedge high-tibial valgus osteotomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-eight knees obtained from cadavers of Caucasian race were dissected. Medial opening-wedge high-tibial valgus osteotomy was performed using a dyn

OBJECTIVES: The introduction of powerful antirheumatic drugs has dramatically improved the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), leading clinicians to reconsider the benefits of joint preservation for rheumatoid forefoot deformities. We have employed joint-preserving forefoot surgeries, including rotational closing-wedge osteotomy of the first metatarsal. The aim of our study is to assess the short-term results of this procedure.
METHODS: From January 2011 through December 2011, 35 feet were treated with this procedure. Subjective, functional, and radiographic outcomes were surveyed.

BACKGROUND: Complete management of extraconal ocular tumors may require the joint efforts of a maxillofacial surgeon to provide access and an ophthalmic surgeon to completely excise the lesion. Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign tumor of the lacrimal glands, representing around 12% of the lacrimal fossa lesions. They may however undergo malignant changes. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA), a type of malignant mixed tumor of the lacrimal gland has been rarely reported.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of CXPA of the lacrimal gland in a 35-year-old male. He was managed by a modifi

The aim of the study was to conduct a long-term follow-up on the stability of the hard tissues after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) with rigid internal fixation (RIF)to set back the mandible and to compare it with that of mandibular advancement performed by the same team of surgeons and with the same examination protocol. Seventeen consecutive patients (6 females and 11 males) could be re-examined 12.7 years (T5) after surgery. The previous examinations were before surgery (T1), 5 days (T2), and 6.6 (T3) and 14.4 (T4) months after surgery. Lateral cephalograms were traced by hand, d

Intermittent administration of human parathyroid hormone (hPTH) has an anabolic effect on bone in animals and humans and is expected to be a potent agent for the treatment of osteoporosis. However, little is known about the effects of hPTH on cancellous bone healing after cancellous bone fractures or osteotomies. We evaluated whether hPTH enhanced bone union at the site of cancellous bone osteotomy and further elucidated the possible mechanisms of hPTH effects on cancellous bone healing. After a bilateral ovariectomy (OVX) or sham operation in mature female rats, cancellous bone osteotomy was

Head preservation is the mainstay of management in younger patients with intracapsular fracture neck of femur. In this prospective study, we have tried to evaluate the role of valgus osteotomy and internal fixation by double-angle blade plate in patients below 60 years of age with displaced intracapsular fractures and whose time since injury is equal to or more than 3 weeks. Among the 20 fractures which are managed by this procedure, 18 fractures united. We recommend this procedure for the treatment of neglected displaced intracapsular fractures in young patients.

This retrospective clinical audit identified the incidence of inferior alveolar nerve dysfunction following mandibular sagittal split osteotomies for a period of 1 year at the Derby Royal Infirmary. The clinical notes of 50 consecutive patients treated with a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy over the last 5 years were used to collect information on the following: age, sex, type of mandibular movement (advancement or setback), recorded nerve damage during surgery, "good" or "bad" split, and the presence of nerve dysfunction at representative postoperative intervals, up to 1 year. One hundred

The aim of this paper was to determine the differences in hip remodeling and final outcomes of hip dysplasia treatment by fixing a certain amount of varus during varus-detorsion osteotomy of the proximal femur. The analysis included 33 children who underwent 48 osteotomies. During final follow-up at skeletal maturity it was found that the amount of varus fixed during the osteotomy influenced significantly femur remodeling and some containment measurements. However it played only slight part in acetabular remodeling. The outcomes at final follow-up proved significantly better in the group in wh

A standard Le Fort I osteotomy was performed on 12 cadavers to determine whether the incidence of pterygoid plate fractures could be reduced by increasing the angle of the curved osteotome relative to the sagittal plane. In the group where an osteotome with the usual angulation was employed, fractures occurred on 9 of 12 sides. In the increased angulation group, 5 of 12 pterygoid plates were fractured. All fractures were restricted to the level of the horizontal osteotomy cut. It is concluded that increased angulation of a curved osteotome can decrease the incidence of fractures of the pterygo

We report about long term follow ups of treatment of Morbus Perthes with Chiari's Pelvic Osteotomy. Average follow up time was 8 years. One of our two main indications for operating was a distinct coxa magna with lack of sufficient roofing or with secondary osteoarthritis caused by this very lack. Cases with advanced destruction or strong lateralisation of the femoral head were the second major indication. Osteotomy as near to the joint as possible and extensive dislocation with maximal medialization of the head are the decisive factors for success for this operation. Two thirds of the cases s

Background/Objectives: Surgical extraction of impacted mandibular third molars is frequently associated with postoperative morbidity, including swelling, trismus, and pain. However, the extent to which osteotomy contributes to these outcomes remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate osteotomy as an intraoperative determinant of early postoperative morbidity following mandibular third molar extraction. Methods: This study represents a secondary analysis of data obtained from a randomized clinical trial. Patients undergoing surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars were c

BACKGROUND: Sagittal synostosis (SS) is the premature closure of sagittal sutures. To investigate the use of absorbable plates as internal attachment points for external spring (ES) traction in the treatment of sagittal craniosynostosis in infants, as well as clarify the indications and advantages of the method.
METHODS: The spring-assisted therapy was applied to treat SS in 24 infants aged between 3 and 9 months. The therapy was divided into 2 groups. One group used ES for 12 children, and the other group used internal springs (IS) for 12 children. The ES group used the ES and traction point

AIMS: This study examined the biomechanical outcomes of osteotomy angles and the internal fixation devices for re-fixation of the femoral neck fracture.
METHODS: The finite element model of femoral neck fracture was initially fixed with three cannulated screws, followed by 10° and 20° valgus osteotomy. The models were re-fixed using sliding hip screw (DHS) + anti-rotation screw (AS) or DHS + medial buttress plate (MBP). Physiological loads were applied to all models.
RESULT: With 10° and 20° valgus osteotomy, the interfragmentary shear stress, sliding distance, and gap decreased, the compres

BACKGROUND: Distal radius malunions occur in 5% to 17% of fractures and may lead to pain and functional impairment. While 3D surgical planning with patient-specific guides has demonstrated high accuracy and reduced fluoroscopy use compared with conventional 2D techniques, its routine clinical implementation remains limited, particularly for in-house hospital-based workflows.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the precision of corrective osteotomy for distal radius malunions using in-house-designed 3D patient-specific surgical guides 1 year after surgery. Secondary objectives were to asse
