Finite element analysis of trans-sutural distraction osteogenesis on the nasomaxillary complex in adolescents with cleft lip and palate.

INTRODUCTION: Trans-sutural distraction osteogenesis (TSDO) has emerged as a promising treatment for midfacial hypoplasia. However, the mechanical effects on craniofacial structures remain insufficiently understood. MATERIAL & METHOD: Finite element models (FEM) of two adolescent patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) (aged 10 and 11) were reconstructed from CBCT data. TSDO was simulated by applying symmetrical traction forces to the maxilla. A modified surgical intervention, transanterior maxillary wall osteotomy, was also modeled to assess its biomechanical impact. Displacement and stress

Antifungal Efficacy of 3D-Cultured Palatal Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Their Secreted Factors against Candida albicans.

Candida albicans is among the life-threatening fungal species and the primary contributor to hospital-acquired systemic infections, accounting for nearly 70% of all fungal infections worldwide. The current treatment primarily relies on azoles, pyrimidine analogs, polyenes, and echinocandins. However, growing antifungal resistance highlights the urgent need for the development of alternative treatments against C. albicans. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) offer huge therapeutic potential for the treatment of C. albicans-associated diseases. In this study, palatal adipose tissue-derived MSCs (PAT-M

The efficacy of velar adhesion in unilateral cleft lip and palate patients: Cleft width and otitis media with effusion.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of the most common congenital anomalies, affecting ~1 in 700 births worldwide. Patients with CLP often experience functional impairments due to the cleft palate, particularly related to feeding and speech. Surgical interventions are essential for addressing these issues, yet no standardized surgical procedure exists. Velar adhesion (VA) is a technique used to reduce the cleft width prior to a palatoplasty, potentially improving surgical outcomes, but its effectiveness remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The impact of VA on cleft-width reduction and the in

Association of prenatal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls with cleft lip and/or palate risk in offspring: A case-control study.

Cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) is a congenital facial defect. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are recognized as both persistent organic pollutants and endocrine-disrupting chemicals, which can cross the placental barrier, leading to an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, there is no study to evaluate the association of prenatal exposure to PCBs with CL/P risk in offspring. Therefore, we investigated a multicenter case-control study, comprising 149 cases and 292 controls, to explore the association of prenatal exposure to single PCB and a PCB mixture with CL/P risk in offspr

Effect of Timing of Secondary Alveolar Bone Grafting on Maxillary Incisor Development in Patients With Cleft Lip and Palate.

ObjectiveSecondary alveolar bone grafting (sABG) is typically performed between 9 and 12 years of age in patients with cleft lip and palate, prior to canine eruption. Recent studies have proposed synchronizing sABG with the eruption of maxillary central incisors to prevent compromised development. However, evidence that late sABG leads to increased incisor abnormalities is lacking. We aimed to investigate the impact of sABG timing on maxillary incisor development.DesignCrown size, root length, and crown-to-root ratio were measured retrospectively on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images

Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Children With Cleft Palate and/or Velopharyngeal Insufficiency: A Primer on Screening, Testing, and Treatment.

Obstructive sleep disordered breathing (oSDB), including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), frequently coexists with cleft lip and palate, velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), and other craniofacial conditions. Moreover, oSDB is often a key factor in decisions for primary or revision cleft palate or velpharyngeal surgery. Due to the frequency with which cleft and craniofacial team members care for patients with oSDB, this article provides a primer for OSA evaluation and management for team members.oSDB can have a significant impact on quality of life, health outcomes, surgical planning, and global

A Single-cell Atlas of Developing Mouse Palates Reveals Cellular and Molecular Transitions in Periderm Cell Fate.

Cleft palate is one of the most common congenital craniofacial disorders that affects children's appearance and oral functions. Investigating the transcriptomes during palatogenesis is crucial for understanding the etiology of this disorder and facilitating prenatal molecular diagnosis. However, there is limited knowledge about the single-cell differentiation dynamics during mid-palatogenesis and late-palatogenesis, specifically regarding the subpopulations and developmental trajectories of periderm, a rare but critical cell population. Here, we explored the single-cell landscape of mouse deve

Association between palatal rugae patterns and terminal planes in primary dentition: Implications for the early detection of malocclusion.

INTRODUCTION: Palatal rugae, or palatal folds, are the unique anatomical features on the hard palate that emerge during fetal development and remain stable throughout the life. These features are valuable for human identification in forensic science, as they are less prone to damage from thermal exposure or physical trauma. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine if there is an association between different palatal rugae patterns and terminal planes in primary dentition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 600 children aged 3-6 years, classified into three term
