Predictors of depression in female adolescents.

Depression during adolescence has been associated with a number of factors, including failure to individuate (Blos, 1968), insecure attachments (Armsden, McCauley, Greenberg, Burke, & Mitchell, 1990), negative parental representations, and object relations that lack self-other differentiation (Blatt, Wein, Chevron, & Quinlan, 1979). The present study examined factors associated with symptoms of depression in 59 nonclinical female adolescents. Specifically, the relationship between a number of theoretically related measures-separation-individuation, interpersonal concerns, self-critical concern

Oral Health Status and Oral Health-related Quality of Life among Children Born Preterm: A Cross-sectional Study.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Neonatal factors like gestational age have a major impact on the general and oral growth and development of the child. To compensate for the low birth weight and enhance weight gain, preterm children are often exposed to more frequent cariogenic food intakes between meals and during the night, and these are well-known risk factors for early childhood caries (ECC). ECC in preterm children might also impact the quality of life of the child and parent. This study evaluates the oral health status and quality of life among children born preterm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A clinic

Follow-up of suspected child maltreatment cases treated at a tertiary child protection service facility.

UNLABELLED: The victim's physical and emotional safety are foremost priorities in the clinical care of suspected child maltreatment (CM). The WHO recommends follow-ups, but we lack standardized procedures. This study examined case characteristics in relation to outcomes and follow-up (FU) feasibility at the Forensic Examination Center for Children and Adolescents (FOrensische Kinder- und JugendUntersuchungsStelle, FOKUS), Austria's first tertiary healthcare service offering regular FUs of CM cases. Suspected CM cases presented to FOKUS between July 2015 and June 2017 were retrospectively analy

Breastfeeding Duration and Child Development.

IMPORTANCE: Detecting and addressing potentially modifiable factors associated with healthy development is key to optimizing a child's potential. When investigating the outcomes of child development, it is important to account for disparities in feeding practices and avoid confounding bias. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the independent association between breastfeeding and attainment of developmental milestones or neurodevelopmental conditions. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study used data from a national network for routine child development surveillance in Israel l

Neonatal Sucrose and Internalizing Behaviors at 18 Months in Children Born Very Preterm.

IMPORTANCE: In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), neonates born very preterm (<33 weeks' gestation) are exposed to great numbers of painful procedures, which is associated with more internalizing (anxiety and depressive) behaviors later in childhood. Oral sucrose is commonly used in NICUs to treat acute procedural pain and is effective in reducing behavioral responses, but the long-term associations between oral sucrose and child behaviors have not yet been examined. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between cumulative neonatal pain and sucrose exposure in early life (prior to approxim

Low blood long chain omega-3 fatty acids in UK children are associated with poor cognitive performance and behavior: a cross-sectional analysis from the DOLAB study.

BACKGROUND: Omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA), especially DHA (docosahexaenonic acid) are essential for brain development and physical health. Low blood Omega-3 LC-PUFA have been reported in children with ADHD and related behavior/learning difficulties, as have benefits from dietary supplementation. Little is known, however, about blood fatty acid status in the general child population. We therefore investigated this in relation to age-standardized measures of behavior and cognition in a representative sample of children from mainstream schools. PARTICIPANTS: 493 school

Assessing resilience in preschool children exposed to intimate partner violence.

This study examined why some preschool-age children exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) showed deleterious outcomes and others appeared more resilient. Resilience, conceptualized as strengths in emotion regulation and prosocial skills, was evaluated using the Social Competence Scale developed by the Conduct Problem Prevention Research Group. The sample consisted of 56 mothers and their 4- to 6-year-old children exposed to IPV within the past 2 years. After controlling for relevant demographic factors, hierarchical regression analyses indicated that better parenting performance, fewer ma

Childhood Maltreatment as Risk Markers for Intimate Partner Sexual Violence: A Meta-Analysis.

Intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) is a devastating yet often overlooked form of violence around the world. Using social learning theory to guide our study, we examined childhood maltreatment risk factors for IPSV victimization and perpetration among men and women. We searched several databases (PsychInfo, Proquest, Sociological Abstracts, Social Service Abstracts, ERIC, and Proquest Dissertation and Theses) to obtain studies for this meta-analysis. Studies were included in the current meta-analysis if they adhered to the following criteria: (a) examined IPSV exclusively, not combined wit

Seeing Violence Differently: Gendered Patterns of Parental Intimate Partner Violence and Adolescent Outcomes.

Growing up in a household with intimate partner violence (IPV) is associated with a range of adverse behavioral and relational outcomes during adolescence and across the life course. Less is known about how caregiver gender and type of IPV shape these outcomes, or whether associations differ by adolescents' race/ethnicity and sex assigned at birth. We used data from 2,437 adolescents (1,178 girls, 1,259 boys) from Waves 3 to 6 (ages 3-15) of the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study. Using survey-weighted linear regression and moderation analyses, we examined associations between matern

Barking dogs do bite: animal-related injuries in children.

BACKGROUND: Animal bites in children are the cause of many emergency room visits and can lead to significant physical and psychological morbidity. While the cause and pattern of trauma vary, we hypothesized that age and size of the child plays a role in the injuries. The purpose of this study was to describe the injuries, animals, modifiable events, and outcomes. METHODS: Following IRB approval, a retrospective, single-center cohort analysis of all patients presenting with animal-related injuries over 10 years was performed. Data regarding the clinical presentation, demographics, and outcomes

Intergenerational Cycles of Maltreatment: An Updated Scoping Review of Psychosocial Risk and Protective Factors.

The intergenerational continuity of child maltreatment (CM) is a growing public health concern. Identifying modifiable risk and protective factors involved in these cycles is crucial. A previous scoping review synthesized the literature on psychosocial factors associated with intergenerational CM up to 2018. Since then, a sizable number of studies have been published; this updated review aims to summarize this recent literature. We conducted a comprehensive search across five major databases (PsycINFO, Scopus, Medline, Social Work Abstracts, and ProQuest Dissertations/Theses) from November 201
