Photodynamic therapy as a key adjunct in the multimodal management of cutaneous Fusarium solani infection in an immunocompromised patient: A case report.

Fusarium solani (F. solani), a ubiquitous environmental fungus and common phytopathogen, rarely causes cutaneous infections in humans-particularly in immunocompromised individuals, where it may lead to severe or disseminated disease with poor prognosis. We report a 60-year-old male with myelofibrosis on long-term ruxolitinib therapy, presenting with progressive cutaneous granulomas on the left thumb (duration: 6 weeks) and back (duration: 2 weeks). The diagnosis of cutaneous fusariosis was established based on clinical presentation, combined with fungal culture, morphological characterization

Viral triggers of Guillain-Barré syndrome: implications for laboratory diagnostics.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a leading cause of acquired acute neuromuscular paralysis and is an immune-mediated disorder of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Accumulating evidence indi-cates that GBS is often preceded by infectious events that trigger autoimmune responses through mechanisms such as molecular mimicry and autoantibody production. Campylobacter jejuni remains the most common bacterial agent, but viral pathogens also contribute to the development of GBS. This review summarizes the current evidence regarding viruses as triggers of GBS, including herpes-viruses, hepatotropic

Deconvolution of Red Blood Cells Thermal Fluid Biopsy Following Systematic Cyclophosphamide or Cilostazol Drug Therapies.

Beyond gas transport, red blood cells (RBCs) have emerging roles regarding innate immunity, regulating blood flow, and participating in nutrient transport, which can be engineered as drug delivery systems since they contribute to maintaining water homeostasis. Following extensive thermoanalytical studies of human blood plasma, our working group investigated the properties of RBCs, examining their role in healthy and in different disease states by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the deconvolution of the resulting thermal curve. In the first study, guinea pigs were treated with

The Role of LRP1 in Glioma Progression and Therapeutic Targeting: A Narrative Review.

Gliomas are the most frequently encountered tumors in the central nervous system, with limited therapeutic effectiveness owing to their highly invasive nature, intratumoral heterogeneity, and presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Low-Density Lipoprotein Receptor-Related Protein 1 (LRP1) is a large, multifunctional transmembrane endocytic receptor that regulates lipid metabolism, cell signaling, and endocytosis in various body tissues, including the brain. LRP1 mediates tumor cell proliferation, invasion, and angiogenesis in gliomas through various cellular signaling mechanisms, including

A nurse navigator program for the management of hepatitis C virus in patients with severe mental disorder. A feasibility trial.

People with severe mental disorders (SMD) face higher hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection risks and lower treatment adherence compared to the general population. Traditional care pathways often fail due to fragmented coordination and patient-related barriers. This study evaluates the feasibility and acceptability of an individualized nurse navigation program (NNP) designed to facilitate adherence to medical appointments and pharmacological treatment in this population. A feasibility randomized open parallel trial was conducted. The intervention simplified the clinical pathway through intensive n

CHIP clinics: a practical overview of structure and function.

Modern knowledge about the principles of clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) has paved way for numerous clinical efforts aimed at managing this pre-malignant condition. The emergence of various CHIP clinics across the globe attests to collaborative attempts to formalize clinical management of CHIP and its entities. However, translational science in this field is limited to date, partly due to nascent therapeutic concepts with limited understanding of natural history and longitudinal follow up. Here, we explore the structure and function of existing CHIP clinics and propose a

[Development and integration of ASP assessment tools for bacteraemia and infections caused by multidrug-resistant microorganisms in paediatrics].

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance is a major global public health challenge with particular implications in pediatrics. Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) require structured tools to assess prescribing quality, especially in complex clinical scenarios such as bloodstream infections and multidrug-resistant organism infections. The aim of this study was to design and implement a structured support program for managing these infections in a pediatric hospital, including an evaluation tool, a standard operating procedure, and its integration into the electronic health record. Bridging evidence and practice: the role of implementation science to optimize plasma transfusion in cirrhosis.

Despite growing evidence and updated clinical practice guidelines discouraging routine plasma transfusions in patients with cirrhosis, real-world practice is inconsistent with current recommendations. Inappropriate use of fresh frozen plasma remains a common challenge, often driven by multiple factors including misinterpretation of coagulation tests such as the prothrombin time and International Normalized Ratio. Unnecessary plasma use is particularly prevalent as prophylaxis in the periprocedural setting. In this perspective article, we summarize current understanding of hemostasis in cirrhos

DETECTX: a novel deep learning approach for detecting pneumonia, tuberculosis, and aspergillosis from chest X-rays.

BACKGROUND: Aspergillosis, pneumonia, and tuberculosis are distinct respiratory illnesses, but they share similar symptoms, including cough, fever, and shortness of breath. This overlap can make accurate diagnosis challenging. Delayed or incorrect identification, particularly of aspergillosis, can lead to worsening patient outcomes and significant lung damage. METHODS: To address this diagnostic challenge, we developed a deep learning based system designed to differentiate between aspergillosis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and healthy lungs using chest X-ray images. We implemented three models:

The Use of Gadoxetic Acid-Enhanced MRI as a Diagnostic Tool in Cases of Biliary Atresia: A Two-Case Report.

Early diagnosis of biliary atresia (BA) remains challenging, although timely recognition is critical for achieving favorable surgical outcomes. We present two infants in whom gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI demonstrated imaging findings that supported early suspicion of BA. Two neonates with persistent cholestasis underwent routine laboratory evaluation, targeted ultrasonography, and hepatocyte-specific magnetic resonance imaging using gadoxetic acid. This contrast agent is actively taken up by functioning hepatocytes and is normally excreted into the biliary system during the delayed hepatobiliar

Human 3D liver spheroids support productive infection of a novel tick-borne phenuivirus.

The identification of novel tick-borne viruses, such as Mukawa virus (MKWV), underscores a growing need to assess their potential public health risks. In this study, we isolated the MKWV strain HLJ1 from Ixodes persulcatus ticks. While this initial isolate demonstrated limited replication in mammalian cell lines and mice, it productively infected human primary cell-derived 3D spheroids. Serial passaging in this model significantly enhanced viral titers, suggesting adaptive evolution. The resulting adapted strain exhibited increased virulence, causing pronounced cytopathic effects in Vero cells

Turning a nation into a cohort: combining national registers and a digital mailbox for population-based health research.

Denmark has long been internationally recognized for its comprehensive national registers, which have supported population-based health research across medical specialties and enabled studies in which the entire national population can function as a single cohort through person-level linkage. These registers have provided rich longitudinal data on healthcare use, diagnoses, treatments, and outcomes, forming a robust foundation for observational research. The introduction of the national digital mailbox system, Digital Post, has added a powerful new dimension to this established research infras

Precision Delineation of Surgical Margins across Breast Cancer Subtypes with a Novel KIAA1363-Targeted NIR Fluorescent Probe.

Surgical resection remains the first-line treatment for breast cancer, underscoring the need for precision tools for intraoperative margin delineation. Due to high heterogeneity, accurate identification of tumor margins poses a significant challenge in breast cancer. Herein, we report a rapid-clearance near-infrared fluorescent probe, Cy-JW (λab = 775 nm, λem = 808 nm, compatible with current clinical intraoperative fluorescence imaging devices), which can target the tumor-overexpressed enzyme KIAA1363. Cy-JW exhibited high aqueous solubility and potent affinity for KIAA1363 (IC50 = 36.90 nM)

The prevalence and antibiotics resistance profile of Burkholderia cepacia in neonatal sepsis: a pioneer study in Kurdistan Region-Iraq.

Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia) is Gram-negative, multidrug-resistant bacteria that can infect neonates and hospitalized patients, often spreading through contaminated medical devices. It causes various infections including sepsis, and it is difficult to treat due its antibiotic resistance. Over a three-year period (2021-2023), data from the ICU at Hevi Pediatric Teaching Hospital were reviewed and analyzed. Sepsis cases were identified based on clinical signs and confirmed through blood culture. B. cepacia identification and sensitivity test were confirmed using the VITEK system. Out of a t

Postoperative Imaging of Peripheral Nerves: Review of Surgical Techniques, Expected Findings, and Complications.

Peripheral nerve injury is a complex condition that significantly impacts quality of life and often affects young and active individuals. Accurate classification of injury severity using the Sunderland grading system is essential for distinguishing cases amenable to conservative management from those that require surgical intervention. While lower-grade injuries are typically managed conservatively at first, persistent or severe symptoms frequently necessitate surgery. Surgical approaches vary depending on the underlying cause of the nerve injury, including compressive neuropathies, trauma, an
