Cellulitis, an infection involving the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue, is the most common reason for skin-related hospitalization and is seen by clinicians across various disciplines in the inpatient, outpatient, and emergency room settings, but it can present as a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Cellulitis is a clinical diagnosis based on the history of present illness and physical examination and lacks a gold standard for diagnosis. Clinical presentation with acute onset of redness, warmth, swelling, and tenderness and pain is typical. However, cellulitis can be difficult to diagn

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is one of the most common pathogenic E. coli pathotypes causing diarrhea in children worldwide. Its enterotoxins, LT and ST, including colonization factors mainly are responsible for human pathogenesis. From 239 rectal swabs of diarrheal patients at Hat Yai and Pattani Hospitals during August 2013 and May 2014, five isolates from only a single E. coli sample demonstrated the possession of estA1, encoding porcine heat-stable enterotoxin (STp). These isolates all belonged to serotype 0169:H Untypeable (HUT) and carried astA, encoding enteroaggregative heat

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is one of the leading causes of neonatal bacterial infections. Population-based surveillance of GBS-related invasive diseases among newborns and infants from 10 prefectures in Japan was performed between 2007 and 2012. The characteristics of cases and isolated GBS are described in this study. The incidence rate of GBS-related invasive diseases was 0.13 per 1,000 live births. Analysis of GBS samples obtained from 60 invasive cases showed that the most frequent serotypes were III (48.3%), Ia (30.0%), and Ib (10.0%). All isolates were susceptible to penicillin G, ampic

Aminoglycosides have played a major role in antimicrobial therapy since their discovery in the 1940s. Their bactericidal efficacy in gram-negative infections, synergism with beta-lactam antibiotics, limited bacterial resistance, and low cost have given these agents a firm place in antimicrobial treatment. After penicillins, aminoglycosides are the most commonly used drugs in the neonatal intensive care unit. While the pharmacodynamic action on the bacterial target is obviously the same in neonates as compared to children and adults, dramatic differences exist in terms of pharmacokinetics. Rena

Two bla(OXA-48)-like-positive isolates (Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter cloacae) were recovered in Argentina in 2008 as part of a large-scale survey focused on multidrug resistance in Enterobacteriaceae. In both cases, sequencing identified β-lactamase OXA-163, differing from OXA-48 by a single amino substitution and a 4-amino-acid deletion. OXA-163 hydrolyzed penicillins, ceftazidime, and cefotaxime, whereas OXA-48 did not. However, OXA-163 had a much lower ability to hydrolyze carbapenems than OXA-48, therefore barely being considered a carbapenemase. In both isolates, the bla(OXA-163

The new beta-lactamase SHV-72 was isolated from clinical Klebsiella pneumoniae INSRA1229, which exhibited the unusual association of resistance to the amoxicillin-clavulanic acid combination (MIC, 64 microg/ml) and susceptibility to cephalosporins, aztreonam, and imipenem. SHV-72 (pI 7.6) harbored the three amino acid substitutions Ile8Phe, Ala146Val, and Lys234Arg. SHV-72 had high catalytic efficiency against penicillins (k(cat)/K(m), 35 to 287 microM(-1) x s(-1)) and no activity against oxyimino beta-lactams. The concentration of clavulanic acid necessary to inhibit the enzyme activity by 50

The prevalence and significance of coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from blood cultures at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) during a six-month period were investigated. Standard and automated microbiological procedures were used to process 3001 blood culture specimens received from 2363 patients and 658 (21.9%) of the blood cultures yielded 854 bacterial isolates. The highest prevalence of positive blood cultures (60%) and the lowest prevalence of blood isolates of CoNS (12%) were found in the intensive care unit (ICU). The blood isolates of CoNS were most freq

Cerebrospinal fluid isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae, collected during the years 1997-2000 at more than 100 Belgian laboratories were studied. The 10 most common serotypes-serogroups representing 76% of the isolates were 14, 6, 9, 19, 23, 18, 4, 10, 8 and 12 (in order of frequency). Thirty-six percent of strains were isolated in children < 5 years old. In this age group the number of serogroups was more limited and 81.4% are included in the 7-valent conjugate vaccine. Decreased susceptibility to penicillin was observed in 13.9% of 237 strains (MIC > 0.06 mg/L), with only 2.1% resistant str

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: In order to prevent prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE), the implantation of a new silver-coated sewing ring has been introduced to provide peri- and postoperative protection against microbial infection.
METHODS: A 56-year-old woman with aortic stenosis had elective replacement with a St. Jude Medical mechanical valve fitted with a silver-coated sewing ring (Silzone). The patient developed early PVE, which necessitated reoperation after one month. Despite a second Silzone prosthesis being implanted, the endocarditis recurred. During a third operation an aortic

A total of 10,346 blood and 682 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae were reported to the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre from laboratories in England and Wales from 1 January 1993 to 31 December 1995. This corresponds to a mean annual incidence of 6.7 per 100,000 episodes of bacteraemia and 0.44/100,000 of meningitis. Absolute numbers of pneumococcal bacteraemia were similar to levels reported between 1990 and 1992, but fewer isolates of pneumococci were made from CSF. There was no discernible overall trend between 1993 and 1995, but age specific incide

The in vitro antibacterial effect of the combination of various polyoxometalates with beta-lactam antibiotics on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains is investigated by the use of both the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) disk method and the agar dilution method. Keggin-structural polyoxotungstates such as K7[PTi2W10O40].6H2O (5) and K7[BVW11O40].7H2O (8) and their lacunary species formulated by [XW11O39]n- and[XW9O34]n- potentiated the antibacterial activity of beta-lactam antibiotics such as oxacillin, piperacillin and cefazolin on MRSA with

Although nondiphtherial corynebacteria are ubiquitous in nature and commonly colonize the skin and mucous membranes of humans, they rarely account for clinical infection. Corynebacterium striatum has rarely been reported to be a pathogen, causing pleuropulmonary infections and bacteremia in only immunocompromised or anatomically altered patients. We noted C. striatum to be the infecting pathogen or copathogen in six patients. To our knowledge, this report describes the first cases of C. striatum causing infection of exist sites of central venous catheters, thrombophlebitis associated with cent

Ehrlichiosis in humans, a rickettsial disease recently discovered in the United States, is generally treated successfully with tetracyclines; however treatment with these agents is usually avoided with children and pregnant women. The in vitro susceptibility of Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the agent of human ehrlichiosis in the United States, was assessed by a quantitative evaluation of infected DH82 cells cultivated in 96-well microtiter plates in the presence of different concentrations of selected antibiotics. Extracellular MICs and MBCs were evaluated after 72 h of exposure to the antibiotics. D

The unprecedented growth in the number of new antibiotics over the past two decades has been the result of extensive research efforts that have exploited the growing body of knowledge describing the interactions of antibiotics with their targets in bacterial cells. Information gained from one class of antimicrobial agents has often been used to advance the development of other classes. In the case of beta-lactams, information on structure-activity relationships gleaned from penicillins and cephalosporins was rapidly applied to the cephamycins, monobactams, penems, and carbapenems in order to d

Ninety percent of the 49 reported cases of serious Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infection have been episodes of presumed or proved endocarditis. E. rhusiopathiae endocarditis correlates highly with occupation (farming, animal exposure), affects more males than females, exhibits a peculiar aortic valve tropism, displays a characteristic erysipeloid cutaneous lesion (in 40% of cases), and is associated with significant mortality (overall rate, 38%). Comparison with other unusual gram-positive rods causing endocarditis shows that E. rhusiopathiae resembles Listeria monocytogenes and Lactobacillus

Plasmids facilitate the vertical and horizontal spread of antimicrobial resistance genes between bacteria. The host range and adaptation of plasmids to new hosts determine their impact on the spread of resistance. In this work, we explore the mechanisms driving plasmid adaptation to novel hosts in experimental evolution. Using the small multicopy plasmid pB1000, usually found in Pasteurellaceae, we studied its adaptation to a host from a different bacterial family, Escherichia coli. We observed two different mechanisms of adaptation. One mechanism is single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in t

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major human pathogen and can cause a range of conditions from asymptomatic colonization to invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). The epidemiology and distribution of IPD-causing serotypes in Australia has undergone large changes following the introduction of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) in 2005 and the 13-valent PCV in 2011. In this study, to provide a contemporary understanding of the IPD causing population in Victoria, Australia, we aimed to examine the population structure and prevalence of antimicrobial resistance using whole-genome sequenc

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistant bacteria are emerging biological contaminants of the environment. In aquatic ecosystems, they originate mainly from hospitals, livestock manure and private households sewage water, which could contain antimicrobial agents and resistant microorganisms. Aeromonas spp. occur ubiquitously in aquatic environments and they cause disease in fish. Motile aeromonads are also associated with human gastrointestinal and wound infections and fish can act as a transmission route of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) aeromonads to humans. The environmental ubiquity, the natura
