Uses of psychotropic drugs by university students in Switzerland.

The use of psychotropic drugs among students is well known, but very few studies have been carried out outside North America, and data on Switzerland are particularly scarce. This study investigates the factors that determine the use of drugs and psychotropic substances among students at the University of Lausanne. Our hypotheses were that study pressure could lead to psychotropic drug use; that use could be either regular or experimental; and that users and non-users would have different opinions about the reasons for use and the consequences. Based on a convenience sample (n = 1199) collecte

Neurodevelopment in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot.

Neurodevelopmental sequelae are prevalent and debilitating for patients with congenital heart defects. Patients born with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) are susceptible for abnormal neurodevelopment as they have several risk factors surrounding the perinatal and perioperative period. Some risk factors have been well described in other forms of congenital heart defects, including transposition of the great arteries and single ventricle heart disease, but they have been less studied in the growing population of survivors of TOF surgery, particularly in infancy and childhood. Adolescents with TOF, eve

Mindfulness as a Path to Freedom from Internet Addiction in Adolescents: A Narrative Review.

In recent years, Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) has become a major mental health concern among adolescents, with detrimental effects on social relationships, academic performance, and emotional well-being. The focus of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) on improving self-awareness, emotional regulation, and cognitive flexibility has drawn interest in MBIs as possible therapeutic approaches for treating IAD. The purpose of this narrative review is to investigate how mindfulness interventions affect teenagers who are experiencing IAD. The review summarizes research findings from multiple

Importance of validity testing in psychiatric assessment: evidence from a sample of multimorbid post-9/11 veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Performance validity (PVTs) and symptom validity tests (SVTs) are necessary components of neuropsychological testing to identify suboptimal performances and response bias that may impact diagnosis and treatment. The current study examined the clinical and functional characteristics of veterans who failed PVTs and the relationship between PVT and SVT failures. METHOD: Five hundred and sixteen post-9/11 veterans participated in clinical interviews, neuropsychological testing, and several validity measures. RESULTS: Veterans who failed 2+ PVTs performed significantly worse than veter

Neuropsychological functioning of homeless people in Paris: An exploratory study.

Homelessness is a multifactorial issue, influenced by structural and individual factors. These factors include health status, which has been reported to be poorer among people experiencing homelessness. Although the somatic and mental health of homeless individuals has already been studied in France, to our knowledge, no research has been conducted on neuropsychological functioning in this country. Studies out with France have identified cognitive impairments as highly prevalent among homeless people, and these impairments are likely affected by local structural factors, such as healthcare acc

Common mental health disorders and cognitive decline in a longitudinal Down syndrome cohort.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability and Alzheimer's disease. In the general population, common mental disorders (CMDs), including anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, are linked to cognitive decline and higher risk for dementia. It is not known how CMDs affect longer-term cognitive outcomes in Down syndrome, and there is often diagnostic uncertainty in older people with Down syndrome and psychiatric comorbidity. AIMS: To study the influence of CMDs on cognitive ability and whether they are related longitudinally to developmen

Consequences of adolescent social isolation on behavior and synaptic plasticity in the dorsal and ventral hippocampus in male Wistar rats.

OBJECTIVE: Social interaction at a young age plays a critical role in the normal maturation of the brain and neuroendocrine system. Deprivation of social contacts has been associated with numerous cognitive and emotional abnormalities. However, neurobiological mechanisms that may underlie these effects remain poorly understood. In the present study, we examined the effect of 4-6-week social isolation during the adolescent period on rat spatial memory and emotional responses and investigated synaptic plasticity in the dorsal (DH) and ventral hippocampus (VH), which are known to be differently i

Calcitriol supplementation attenuates cisplatin-induced behavioral and cognitive impairments through up-regulation of BDNF in male rats.

Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment such as memory impairment and concentration problems are now extensively recognized as side effects of chemotherapy. These problems reduce the quality of life in patients. Therefore, the present study aims to examine the effects of calcitriol supplementation (100 ng/kg /day for five weeks) on cognitive impairment, behavioral deficits, and hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) changes following cisplatin treatment (5 mg/kg/ once a week for five weeks). We also determined the impact of cisplatin and calcitriol administration on reaction ti

Chalcones reverse the anxiety and convulsive behavior of adult zebrafish.

In the treatment of anxiety and seizures, drugs of the benzodiazepine (BZD) class are used, which act on the Central Nervous System (CNS) through the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Flavonoids modulate GABAA receptors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anxiolytic and anticonvulsant effects of synthetic chalcones and their mechanisms of action via the GABAergic system, using adult zebrafish (ZFa). The animals were treated with chalcones (4.0 or 20 or 40 mg/kg; 20 µL; i.p) and submitted to the open field and 96 h toxicity test. Chalcones that cause locomotor alteration w
