PURPOSE: To assess the association of patient, lesion, and procedure variables, including calcification, with late lumen loss (LLL) after use of drug-eluting balloon (DEB) therapy in patients with femoropopliteal arterial disease.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 91 patients (mean age 72.0±8.62 years; 50 men) were analyzed at 6 months after DEB treatment. Lesions were located in the superficial femoral artery (SFA, n=68) and popliteal artery (n=23). Lesion calcification was graded by a core laboratory using 2 published scoring indices: the peripheral artery calcification scoring system a

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is an age-related medical condition affecting mostly muscular arteries of the limb. It is the 3rd leading cause of atherosclerotic morbidity. The mechanical environment of endothelial cells (ECs) in PAD is characterized by disturbed blood flow (d-flow) and stiff extracellular matrices. In PAD, the stiffness of arteries is due to decreased elastin function and increased collagen content. These flow and stiffness parameters are largely missing from current models of PAD. It has been previously proven that ECs exposed to d-flow or stiff substrates lead to proathe…

Propranolol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and migraine prophylaxis. Although it has been shown that propranolol dilates the peripheral arteries of rat, its action in the central nervous system vasculature has not been investigated. In this study, the effects of propranolol in rat basilar artery were investigated. Basilar arteries from male Wistar rats were examined in a myograph system. The relaxant effects of propranolol, pindolol, atenolol, pizotifen and methysergide were examined in basilar arteries precontracted by sero

The present knowledge of coronary arteries in prenatal diagnosis is reviewed with a focus on three aspects: the physiology and visualization of coronary flow, malformations involving the coronary arteries, and the "heart-sparing effect". Visualization of coronary arteries in a healthy human fetus is possible in real-time and colour Doppler during the last 10 wk of gestation when ultrasound conditions are excellent. Visualization at an earlier gestational age (up to 13 wk) is feasible mainly in association with malformations and impending hypoxia. The main coronary malformations that can be vis

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the incidence of self-reported neurologic hand complications after radial artery harvest for coronary artery bypass grafting.
METHODS: Between February 20, 1996, and December 31, 1999, 615 patients underwent coronary bypass operations with radial arteries. A scripted telephone interview was performed, collecting data on perceived thumb weakness and sensation abnormalities in the distribution of the radial nerve in 560 patients. The average time to follow-up interview was 14.5 +/- 9 months.
RESULTS: Neurologic complications were reported in 30.1%, decreased

A prospective study of 222 consecutive autopsies of cancer cases was undertaken to investigate whether carcinomatous lymphangitis and pure arterial tumor embolism of the lungs are different clinicopathological entities. The lungs were removed as a block and 15 sections (three from each lobe) were analyzed. A protocol containing clinical (ie, dyspnea, cyanosis, right ventricular failure, engorgement of jugular veins, and peripheral edema as main cause of death) and morphological (ie, right ventricle thickness and dilatation, vascular sclerosis, pulmonary infarct) data were carefully recorded in

INTRODUCTION: Nowadays, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in the current obstetric practice. PHYSIOLOGICALLY ADAPTED MECHANISMS OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM IN PREGNANCY: It is normal that during pregnancy some physiological adaptive changes of the cardiovascular system occur and they may contribute to the deterioration of the clinical cardiac status of a patient with preexisting or acquired cardiovascular disease. The most prominent adaptive mechanisms include the increase of circulating blood volume, decrease of peripheral vascular resistance a

Premature development of atherosclerosis and increased rate of coronary artery and peripheral vascular diseases are characteristic features of patients with diabetes mellitus. Hyperlipidemia is an important precipitating factor for these diseases. Several patterns of lipid alteration among diabetics were described; the most common is hypertriglyceridemia. This study was constructed to look at the pattern of lipid alteration among Saudi diabetic patients. Forty-three percent of diabetic patients were dyslipidemic with an equal distribution of dyslipidemic patients with respect to type of dyslip

UNLABELLED: Coronary diameters and central hemodynamics were measured in 22 patients with stable coronary artery disease before and after 20 mg of intravenous diltiazem. Coronary diameters from high quality biplane coronary angiograms were calculated as mean values after caliper measurements of identical segments. Measurements were made in angiographically normal and abnormal proximal, middle and distal vessel segments. Central hemodynamics showed a significant decrease for heart rate, mean aortic pressure and peripheral resistance (p less than 0.001). Coronary diameters increased between 2 an

OBJECTIVE: Severe wound infections in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) are common, potentially life- and limb-threatening, and difficult to treat. Evidence on patients with infected leg ulcers in PAD is scarce. This study aims to provide insight into the microbiological patterns and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of specific pathogens in patients with arterial leg ulcers.
METHODS AND DESIGN: In this retrospective, consecutive, single-centre study 16,553 patients underwent an endovascular revascularization procedure between 2012 and 2021. Of these, 1,142 patients had PAD Rutherfor

Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a moderately heritable pleiotropic cytokine whose elevated concentrations in coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, pulmonary arterial hypertension, Eales' disease, Sjògren's syndrome, osteoarthritis, adenocarcinoma, neuroblastoma, polymyalgia rheumatica, pulmonary tuberculosis, and enterovirus 71 infection, and following coronary artery bypass graft show larger genetic effects than in unaffected low IL-6 controls. We hypothesize that genetic effects may depend upon whether average IL-6 concentrations are high or low, i.e., quantile-dependent expressivity…

Diabetes mellitus is constantly increasing worldwide. Vascular complications are the most common in the setting of long-standing disease, claiming the greatest burden in terms of morbidity and mortality. Glucotoxicity is involved in vascular damage through different metabolic pathways, such as production of advanced glycation end-products, activation of protein kinase C, polyol pathway activation and production of reactive oxygen species. Vascular complications can be classified according to the calibre of the vessels involved as microvascular (such as diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy and neu

Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bacteremia is a severe bloodstream infection with potential for metastatic spread to multiple organs. Although prostatic abscesses are typically associated with gram-negative organisms, MSSA may rarely cause disseminated multisystem infection, particularly in patients with significant comorbidities. Early recognition and aggressive intervention are essential to improve outcomes. A 64-year-old man with diabetes, hypertension, and peripheral arterial disease presented with back pain and new-onset atrial fibrillation. Blood cultures confirmed MSS…

Frailty is common among cardiac patients; however, frailty assessment data from patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are limited. The purpose of this observational study was to identify the prevalence and factors related to frailty in addition to unique frailty marker groupings in a cohort of sedentary adults with PAD. We grouped three PAD-relevant frailty characteristics using Fried's frailty phenotype -1) exhaustion, (2) weakness, and (3) slowness-and observed the prevalence of pre-frailty (1-2 characteristics) and frailty (3 characteristics) in the PAD cohort. Of the 106 particip…
