Chronic emptiness in borderline personality disorder (BPD) has received little empirical attention. We sought to examine basic properties of a single chronic emptiness item, including prevalence, reliability, validity, the relation of the emptiness item to other BPD criteria, and measures of personality. Undergraduates enrolled in psychology courses over 12 years' time completed the McLean Screening Instrument for Borderline Personality Disorder (MSI-BPD) (N = 22,217). Subsets of participants completed the International Personality Disorder Examination-Screening Questionnaire (IPDE-SQ) (N = 27

Automatically extracted measures of speech constitute a promising marker of psychosis as disorganized speech is associated with psychotic symptoms and predictive of psychosis-onset. The potential of speech markers is, however, hampered by (i) lengthy assessments in laboratory settings and (ii) manual transcriptions. We investigated whether a short, scalable data collection (online) and processing (automated transcription) procedure would provide data of sufficient quality to extract previously validated speech measures. To evaluate the fit of our approach for purpose, we assessed speech in rel

Injustice, breach of trust, and humiliation are social stressors which can result in embitterment, known to everybody and which has been described in the Bible (Cain and Abel) or by Aristotle in the Nicomachean Ethics. It has been discussed by several authors since the early days of psychiatric classification. In the textbook 'Psychiatry' by E. Kraepelin a full chapter is devoted to 'querulant delusion', named a reactive psychosis, which can be discriminated from endogenous psychosis or personality disorders. Core symptoms are embitterment, negativism, helplessness, self blame, unspecific soma

INTRODUCTION: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) affects 1 to 3% of the general population and up to 20% of psychiatric inpatients. It is characterized by emotional dysregulation, impaired interpersonal relationships, and impulsive behaviors. This systematic review aims to identify psychopathological mechanisms, comorbidities, and gender differences associated with violence in BPD.
METHODS: This review followed PRISMA guidelines and included studies published in English or French with no time restriction. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed and Ovid using the search equation: ((vi

OBJECTIVES: Despite the large amount of literature examining the potential influence of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on psychiatric symptoms and cognitive disorders, only a few studies have focused on its effect on personality. We investigated the correlation between total electrical energy delivered (TEED) and the occurrence of depressive traits in patients with Parkinson disease (PD) after one year of DBS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study involved 20 patients with PD (12 women, mean [±SD] age 57.60 ± 7.63 years) who underwent bilateral STN-DBS, whose personality char

STUDY OBJECTIVES: In some patients, it is difficult to correctly nosologically classify daytime sleepiness. Clinical manifestations may be nonspecific; on the basis of objective measures it is possible to determine the current severity of sleepiness, but they do not always allow accurate diagnosis. It is especially difficult to distinguish between idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) and hypersomnia associated with a psychiatric disorder (PSY).
METHODS: To find significant differences between the IH and PSY groups, we included 67 patients (IH, n = 15; PSY, n = 52) in the study, focusing on differences

Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory has been used to investigate personality in the development and maintenance of disordered eating. However, the vast majority of research from this perspective has been limited by the use of measures developed to assess the original theory, rather than the significantly revised theory, potentially overlooking key personality differences in eating disorder subtypes. The current study aimed to overcome limitations when using measures based on the original theory by investigating differences and similarities in reinforcement sensitivity across eating disorder subty

BACKGROUND: The prevalence, long-term temporal consistency and factors influencing negative attitudes and poor treatment adherence among psychiatric patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) are not well known.
METHODS: In the Vantaa Depression Study (VDS), a prospective 5-year study of psychiatric patients with DSM-IV MDD, 238 (88.5%) patients' attitudes towards and adherence to both antidepressants and psychotherapeutic treatments at baseline, 6 months, 18 months and 5 years was investigated.
RESULTS: Throughout the follow-up, most patients reported positive attitudes towards pharmacot

BACKGROUND: Many autistic people, particularly women, do not receive an autism diagnosis until adulthood, delaying their access to timely support and clinical care. One possible explanation is that autistic traits may initially be misinterpreted as symptoms of other psychiatric conditions, leading some individuals to experience misdiagnosis of other psychiatric conditions prior to their autism diagnosis. However, little is currently known about the frequency and nature of psychiatric misdiagnoses in autistic adults.
METHODS: Using data collected in the first half of 2019 from an ongoing longi

BACKGROUND: Depressive and cardiological disorders present a major comorbidity. Their manifold interrelations may be best analysed within a biopsychosocial model of disease.
METHODS: A systematic research was done on empirical studies published during the last 15 years and dealing with epidemiological, etiopathogenetic and therapeutic dimensions of the comorbidity of depression, anxiety and heart disease.
RESULTS: From an epidemiological perspective recurrent depressions are associated with a significantly increased risk of coronary heart disease. Depressive disorders play a major role in tr

BACKGROUND: The reconceptualization of the personality disorder model brought by the DSM-5 and ICD-11 introduced the level of personality functioning as the main criterion of PD, which encompasses a set of intrapsychic functions necessary for self-other understanding in interpersonal contexts. Research interest has been growing in examining the relationship between childhood traumatic experiences and personality functioning, predominantly with adult populations; however, there is a notable scarcity of studies exploring these associations in adolescents.
AIMS: The aim of the present study was

Theoretical approaches of personality structure are diverse. We examine the primary emotional aspects of personality as the correspondence of two mainstream constructs: the lexically-based Big Five (BIG5) and the biologically-based Affective Neuroscience Theory (ANT) within two approaches. In the variable-centered approach (VCA), our aim is to identify affective super-traits; while in the person-centered approach (PCA) to uncover latent profile patterns. 240 participants (177 women, 63 men) completed the 112-item affective neuroscience personality scales (ANPS), and the 44-item Big Five Invent

This study explored demographic, ideological, self-rating and personality traits correlates of the Dark Tetrad (DT4) which measures Narcissism (Special), Machiavellianism (Crafty), Psychopathy (Wild), and Sadism (Mean) traits. In total, 447 adults completed three tests: a bright-side, work-related, personality test (HPTI: High Performance Type Indicator), a dark-side test (Short Dark Tetrad) and a number of self-ratings. Correlations and regressions showed that all four dark traits were associated with low Adjustment (Neuroticism), but also with high Risk-Taking and Competitiveness (low Agreea

OBJECTIVE: Several recent accounts have failed to replicate the so-called Narcissism Epidemic, suggesting potential influences of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in 2008 as a reason for narcissism trend reversals. Here, we provide evidence for narcissism test score changes from 1982 to 2023.
METHODS: We investigated self-report data on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) from 1105 studies (k = 1621, N = 546,225) using precision-weighted cross-temporal meta-analysis.
RESULTS: Data collection years were meaningfully negatively associated with narcissism scores in virtually all analy

OBJECTIVE: The past two decades have established that people generally have insight into their personalities, but less is known about how and why self-knowledge might vary between individuals. Using the Realistic Accuracy Model as a framework, we investigate whether some people make better "targets" of self-perception by behaving more consistently in everyday life, and whether these differences have benefits for psychological adjustment.
METHOD: Using data from the Electronically Activated Recorder (n = 286), we indexed self-knowledge as the link between self-reports of personality and actual

OBJECTIVE: Personality traits change in both mean levels and variance across the life span but the mechanisms underlying these developmental trends remain unclear. Social Investment Principle (SIP) suggests that social expectations drive personality changes in adulthood. Accordingly, we tested whether differences between personality traits in social expectations for them can explain their different change trajectories in young adulthood.
METHODS: A pool of 257 personality items was used to measure personality traits' means and variances (N = 1096), and levels expected by friends, partners and

Recent genomic, psychological, and developmental research shows that human personality is organized as a complex hierarchy that ascends from individual traits in many specific situations to multi-trait profiles in two domains that regulate emotional reactivity (temperament) or goals and values (character), and finally to three integrated temperament-character networks that regulate learning to maintain well-being in changing conditions. We carried out person-centered analyses of the components of subjective well-being (positive affect, negative affect, and life satisfaction) to personality in
