Suicide in autism spectrum disorders.

This review focuses on suicide in patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) as well as risk factors and comorbidities of persons with ASD who have attempted suicide. Research was conducted by searching PubMed and Psychinfo for articles. Suicide in ASD is largely understudied. Although suicide is common in clinical samples, we have little knowledge of suicide in persons with ASD in the general population. Comorbidity, particularly with depression and other affective disorders or schizoid disorders and psychotic symptoms, is often reported, so it is difficult to determine if suicidality is a

Advanced practice nursing in child maltreatment: practice characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: Child maltreatment is a problem of epidemic proportions in the United States. Pediatric nurse practitioners and other advanced practice nurses (APNs) have been caring for maltreated children for decades, yet to date no comprehensive assessment of their practice characteristics or their clinical and academic contributions to the field has been performed. The purpose of this study is to describe the practice characteristics of APNs who care for maltreated children. METHOD: A descriptive design was used for this study. Child advocacy centers and children's hospitals were contacted

Genitalia burn: accident or violence? Concerns that transcend injury treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of genital burn which raised the suspicion of maltreatment (sexual abuse and neglect by lack of supervision). CASE DESCRIPTION: An infant was taken to the Emergency Room of a pediatric hospital with an extensive burn in the vulva and perineum. The mother claimed the burn had been caused by a sodium-hydroxide-based product. However, the injury severity led to the suspicion of sexual abuse, which was then ruled out by a multidisciplinary team, based on the consistent report by the mother. Besides, the lesion type matched those caused by the chemical agent involved

Psychometric assessment of a self-administered version of the Significant Other Survey.

While there are a number of general measures that assess interpersonal and psychological distress experienced by individuals who are in a close relationship with a substance abusing adult, until recently the field has lacked a psychometrically sound, self-administered multidimensional measure explicitly designed to measure the problems of non-substance-abusing adults who are concerned about a substance using loved one. This study examined the psychometric properties of a 54-item, self-administered (SA) version of the Significant Other Survey (SOS), a measure designed to address this gap. The S

An ecological-transactional analysis of children and contexts: the longitudinal interplay among child maltreatment, community violence, and children's symptomatology.

Cicchetti and Lynch have conceptualized ecological contexts as consisting of nested levels with varying degrees of proximity to the individual. These levels of the environment interact and transact with each other over time in shaping individual development and adaptation. With a sample of maltreated (n = 188) and nonmaltreated (n = 134) children between the ages of 7 and 12 years, this investigation employed a 1-year longitudinal design to conduct an ecological-transactional analysis of the mutual relationships among community violence, child maltreatment, and children's functioning over time

Challenges of hemodialysis in Vietnam: experience from the first standardized district dialysis unit in Ho Chi Minh City.

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis is an increasingly common treatment in Vietnam as the diagnosis of end stage renal disease continues to rise. To provide appropriate hemodialysis treatment for end-stage renal disease patients, we conducted a 1-year cross-sectional study to measure the prevalence of bloodborne infection and factors associated with non-compliant behaviors in hemodialysis patients. METHODS: One hundred forty-two patients were tested for hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen and hepatitis C virus (HCV) core antigen. They provided demographic, medical and dialysis information. Non-compl

Niemann-Pick Disease Type B in Traumatic Splenic Rupture.

The rupture of spleen is common in clinical and forensic practice. Trauma is the most common cause of splenic rupture. Although rare, traumatic splenic rupture may occur in these individuals with asymptomatic underlying disease, and clinical and forensic pathologists may neglect the disease and diagnose only the traumatic splenic rupture. Here, we present a case of postinjury splenic rupture resulting in splenectomy, where the patient was diagnosed with Niemann-Pick disease type B through histopathological examination and genetic testing. In forensic practice, in cases of isolation splenic rup

Violence Against Women: Representations, Interpretations, and Education.

Cultural representations of violence against women have been mystified, eroticized, and depicted as heroic, camouflaging, and trivializing acts of violence as a societal norm for thousands of years. This themed issue invites people to re/claim identities and power, and enter into a global cultural discourse connected with cross-disciplinary channels and creative work.

[Abuse in healthcare - lessons learned during two decades of research].

Patients' experience of abuse in health care (AHC) is common, and may cause long-lasting suffering. In Sweden, lifetime prevalence is estimated at 20 per cent among female patients and 8 per cent among male patients, and a background of other abuse is a risk factor. Most health care staff have experience of patients who have been abused, but the topic is surrounded by silence from both patients and caregivers. Models for training staff in groups have been evaluated and a more proactive stance can be fostered. Department heads and health care authorities are responsible for providing staff with

An unusual case of pulmonary fat embolism following blunt trauma.

Fat embolism is markedly underdiagnosed, even though it is a well-known phenomenon following fractures of the long bones, injury to subcutaneous fat tissue, rupture of a fatty liver, surgical operations on fatty tissues, septicemia, burns and barotrauma. Forensic pathologists tend to "simplify" autopsy report conclusion in cases with multiple injuries where fat embolism and exsanguination could be considered to be the concomitant causes of death. Herein we present a case of 24-year-old male who was beaten with a metal rod by several persons. On admission to hospital his vital signs and laborat

Predicting physically violent misconduct in prison: A comparison of four risk assessment instruments.

Violence in correctional facilities is an important issue for both prisoners and prison staff. Risk assessment instruments have demonstrated their accuracy in predicting the risk of (re) offending and institutional violence in psychiatric settings, but less is known about their ability to predict violent misconduct in prison. The present study applied four risk assessment instruments (Structured Assessment of Protective Factors for violence risk, Historical Clinical Risk Management-20, Psychopathy checklist - Revised, and Violent Risk Appraisal Guide) to 52 violent offenders in a Swiss prison

[Child sexual abuse: Description of a French population having consulted in a forensic medical service between 2011 and 2015].

BACKGROUND: When child sexual abuse (CSA) is suspected, the detection of anogenital anomalies is rare. In France, since 2011, most clinical examinations of children for whom CSA is suspected take place in the forensic medical service (FMS). OBJECTIVES: To describe a population of children examined for suspected CSA in the FMS of the Nancy Regional University Hospital Center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Children under the age of 18 who consulted for suspected CSA in the Nancy FMS between 2011 and 2015 were included. Hallucinations in the months after a trauma: An investigation of the role of cognitive processing of a physical assault in the occurrence of hallucinatory experiences.

The role that cognitive processing of a recent trauma has in the occurrence of hallucinations has not been examined longitudinally. This study investigated trauma-related cognitive predictors of hallucinations in the months following an interpersonal assault. Four weeks after treatment at an emergency department for interpersonal assault injuries, 106 participants were assessed for peri-traumatic cognitive processing, cognitive responses to trauma memories, negative beliefs about the self, Posttraumatic-stress disorder (PTSD), and hallucinatory experiences. Hallucinatory experiences were reass

[A systematic review of mistreatmen in medical students].

Mistreatment of medical students is an international problem that has been reported for decades in different countries, but its conceptualization and registration form are very heterogeneous. This review aims to identify the main features of this mistreatment from a systematic analysis of the literature published between 1980 and 2016. Using databases, 118 published papers were obtained under the selected criteria. Most widely accepted definitions are presented and structuring of the following categories: directionality, types, perpetrators, scenarios, vulnerable groups, consequences, complain

[Shaken baby syndrome].

The shaken baby syndrome (SBS) or shaking trauma describes the occurrence of subdural hematoma, retinal hemorrhage and diffuse injury to the brain by vigorous shaking of an infant that has a poor prognosis. Rapid cranial acceleration and deceleration leads to tearing of bridging veins, retinal hemorrhages and diffuse brain injuries. In addition to clinical symptoms, such as irritability, feeding difficulties, somnolence, apathy, seizures, apnea and temperature regulation disorders, vomiting also occurs due to increased intracranial pressure. Milder forms of SBS often go undiagnosed and the num

Intergenerational transmission of violence in Bangladesh: Mediated through maternal attitudes towards intimate partner violence, disciplinary beliefs, and life satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION: Child discipline, while intended to instill appropriate behavior, often manifests as violent practices in low- and middle-income countries, including Bangladesh. Maternal exposure to violence, attitude towards intimate partner violence (IPV), and disciplinary beliefs serve as key determinants of physical disciplinary practices. These dynamics illustrate how exposure to violence in adulthood can shape parenting behaviors, highlighting the urgency of addressing cultural attitudes that sustain harsh physical discipline. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study analyzed nationally represen
