Agreement between telehealth and face-to-face assessment of intellectual ability in children with specific learning disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Access to cognitive assessments for children living remotely is limited. Telehealth represents a potential cost- and time-effective solution. A pilot study was conducted to determine the feasibility of telehealth to assess cognitive function in children with learning difficulties. METHODS: Thirty-three children (median age = 9 years 11 months), recruited from the New South Wales (NSW) Centre for Effective Reading, underwent assessment of intellectual ability. Comparisons were made between the intellectual ability index scores obtained by a psychologist sitting face-to-face with

Nail Raman spectroscopy: A promising method for the diagnosis of onychomycosis. An ex vivo pilot study.

Trichophyton rubrum and Candida species comprise the majority of onychomycosis pathogens. The aim of this study was to evaluate Raman spectroscopy for the differentiation between healthy and either T. rubrum or Candida infected nails. Raman measurements were performed on clippings (N = 52) infected either by T. rubrum (N = 12) or Candida species (N = 14; C. parapsilosis (sensu lato): N = 11, C. glabrata: N = 1, C. albicans: N = 2) with healthy nails (N = 26) used as controls. Systematic spectral differences were observed in the 500-520 cm-1 band region, attributable to a diverting imprint of t

Decellularization of the Porcine Ear Generates a Biocompatible, Nonimmunogenic Extracellular Matrix Platform for Face Subunit Bioengineering.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess whether perfusion-decellularization technology could be applied to facial grafts. BACKGROUND: Facial allotransplantation remains an experimental procedure. Regenerative medicine techniques allow fabrication of transplantable organs from an individual's own cells, which are seeded into extracellular matrix (ECM) scaffolds from animal or human organs. Therefore, we hypothesized that ECM scaffolds also can be created from facial subunits. We explored the use of the porcine ear as a clinically relevant face subunit model to develop regenerative m

The relationship between in-session commitment language and daily self-reported commitment to reduce or abstain from drinking.

BACKGROUND: Motivational interviewing is hypothesized to operate by enhancing a client's internal motivation to change. Past research operationalizes this process by measuring in-session statements for change (i.e., change talk), yet relationships between change talk and other measures of motivation have yet to be substantiated. This study tested whether in-session change talk predicted subsequent reports of commitment to abstain or moderate drinking assessed via ecological momentary assessment (EMA), and explored each of their contributions to drinking outcomes. METHOD: Secondary data analys

Community readiness and momentum: identifying and including community-driven variables in a mixed-method rural palliative care service siting model.

BACKGROUND: Health service administrators make decisions regarding how to best use limited resources to have the most significant impact. Service siting models are tools that can help in this capacity. Here we build on our own mixed-method service siting model focused on identifying rural Canadian communities most in need of and ready for palliative care service enhancement through incorporating new community-driven insights. METHODS: We conducted 40 semi-structured interviews with formal and informal palliative care providers from four purposefully selected rural communities across Canada. C

Moving from peripheral blood to local uterine immunophenotype analysis in patients with poor reproductive history: pilot study of a novel technique.

BACKGROUND: A complete reproductive immunophenotype is poorly described, with most focus on peripheral blood natural killer cells rather than uterine populations. There is debate regarding normal endometrial levels, with no consensus, and much controversy on correlation with implantation/miscarriage. AIMS: Development and validation of a rapid endometrial assessment flow cytometry (FCM) technique, allowing determination of local lymphocyte subset ranges, comparison to peripheral blood, and patient subgroup analysis. METHODS: Prospective pilot, assessing patients with prior implantation, fail

Phthalate metabolites in maternal and cord plasma and their relations to other selected endocrine disruptors and steroids.

Endocrine disruptors (EDs) are known to have harmful effects on the human endocrine system; special effort is actually given to the exposure during pregnancy. Humans are usually exposed to a mixture of EDs, which may potentiate or antagonize each other, and the combined effect may be difficult to estimate. The main phthalate monoesters monoethyl-, mono-n-butyl-, monoisobutyl-, monobenzyl-, mono-(2-ethylhexyl)-, mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl)- and mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate were determined in 18 maternal (37th week of pregnancy) and cord plasma samples using liquid chromatography-tandem

Identifying Youth at Risk for Commercial Sexual Exploitation Within Child Advocacy Centers: A Statewide Pilot Study.

Commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) is a social problem in the United States that has recently received growing attention from policy makers, advocates, and researchers. Despite increasing awareness of this issue, information on the prevalence, demographic profile, and psychosocial needs of victims of CSEC is scarce. To better understand the scope of CSEC and to examine the feasibility of screening for CSEC in Child Advocacy Centers (CACs), a pilot study was initiated through Arkansas Building Effective Services for Trauma (ARBEST) to identify youth who may be at risk for commerc

A Pilot Study on the Efficacy of a Treatment Algorithm to Detoxify Dental Implant Surfaces Affected by Peri-implantitis.

This in vitro pilot study was performed to determine whether a treatment algorithm including mechanical debridement, followed by air powder abrasion with glycine, followed by citric acid conditioning with vigorous flushing of the surface with sterile water after each step, is capable of decontaminating an infected implant surface. A total of 14 dental implants that were deemed hopeless due to advanced peri-implantitis were extracted. Of these, 6 implants served as tests and had their exposed surfaces treated with the decontamination protocol, 6 served as untreated controls, and 2 were mechanic

Short-Term Effects of Cold Liquids on the Pharyngeal Swallow in Preterm Infants with Dysphagia: A Pilot Study.

Cold stimulation reduces airway compromise in adults with dysphagia. However, there is no sufficient evidence to support its use in the pediatric population. The primary goal of this pilot study is to assess the effect of cold liquid on the pharyngeal swallow mechanism in preterm infants with dysphagia. We hypothesized that thermal stimulation from cold liquid will decrease the risk of airway compromise in dysphagic preterm infants. Nine preterm infants with clinical symptoms of dysphagia were included. Video fluoroscopic swallow studies were used to assess the swallowing mechanism of each par

Olfactory cleft proteome does not reflect olfactory performance in patients with idiopathic and postinfectious olfactory disorder: A pilot study.

Technical advances including liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and its data analysis enable detailed proteomic analysis of the nasal mucus. Alterations of the nasal mucus proteome may provoke substantial changes of the nasal physiology and have already been associated with rhinologic diseases such as allergic rhinitis. This study was conducted as a pilot study to map the olfactory cleft proteome using current techniques for proteomic analysis. Furthermore, we aimed to investigate proteomic changes as potential biomarkers in patients suffering from idiopathic and postinfectious olf

Systemic safety of serial intralesional steroid injection for subglottic stenosis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Serial intralesional steroid injection (SILSI) has recently been proposed as an effective scar-modifying therapy for subglottic stenosis (SGS). We aimed to explore the systemic absorption of steroid following SILSI and to characterize the magnitude and chronicity of any effect observed. Specifically, we aimed to show that any effect resolves prior to the next intralesional injection. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, observational pilot study. METHODS: Patients were injected intralesionally with 40 to 200 mg triamcinolone. Serum cortisol, as well as white cell counts and infl

Development and validation of simulated virtual patients to impart early clinical exposure in endocrine physiology.

In the country presently, preclinical medical students are not routinely exposed to real patients. Thus, when they start clinical postings, they are found to have poor clinical reasoning skills. Simulated virtual patients (SVPs) can improve clinical skills without endangering real patients. This pilot study describes the development of two SVPs in endocrine physiology and their validation in terms of acquisition of clinical knowledge and student engagement. Two SVPs, Nandini Sharma (unintentional weight gain) and Sunil Yadav (polyuria), were created and published on the i-Human Patients platfo
