In this study we have developed a new approach to synthesize superabsorbent materials via derivatization of polysaccharides of soybean waste (okara) and banana fibres using mechanochemistry. These polysaccharides, in equal weight ratio, were derivatized with succinic anhydride (SA) in the thermo-mechanical reactive extrusion process in the presence of different amounts of catalysts K2CO3 and/or Zn(OAc)2. The reactions were performed at 130-140 °C for 10 min. Sequentially, after removal of unreacted SA, the derivatized polysaccharides were neutralized with NaOH, KOH and/or aq. NH3 to obtain sup

The in-situ remediation of recalcitrant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in heavily contaminated coking plant soils is severely constrained by the classic Fenton process, which fails to generate hydroxyl radicals (•OH) efficiently at circumneutral pH due to catalyst deactivation. Here, we demonstrate that this critical bottleneck can be overcome by harnessing gallic acid (GA), a natural polyphenol, to engineer a self-sustaining catalytic cycle. Our optimized Fe(III)/GA/H2O2 system achieved a remarkable 99.4% degradation of high-concentration PAHs (2149.69 mg/kg) in authentic aged soil w

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are keystone microorganisms in soil ecosystems, and their community composition plays a crucial role in regulating ecosystem functions. Although high-throughput sequencing is widely used to characterize their communities, the selection of reference databases for sequence annotation remains inconsistent. To assess database performance at the species level, rhizosphere soil and root samples from four plant species with contrasting communities were subjected to amplicon sequencing. Taxonomic annotations generated using the MaarjAM, SILVA, and NCBI databases were

Salt stress is frequently encountered by plants and is a major constraint on crop production. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a staple cereal crop that is important for human health and food security. However, the response mechanisms of roots from different wheat varieties to salt stress remain unclear. In this study, we analyzed the complex response mechanisms of the salt-tolerant variety Longjian 114 (LJ114) and the salt-sensitive variety Chinese Spring (CS) to salt stress using integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. The results showed that LJ114 maintained better growth and exh

Cassava peel, a by-product of cassava root processing, can be used as food if processed properly. It is important to note that the high-cyanogenic glycoside content in cassava plants has the potential to produce hydrogen cyanide (HCN), which has been proven to cause health problems. Therefore, it would be beneficial to consider a method that could help reduce HCN levels. This study explored the impact of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and heating on the HCN of cassava peel during the initial stage of food processing. This study is experimental in nature, as a follow-up to previous research. The c

Our ability to explain and predict the spatial patterns of forest mortality remains limited. We tested the predictability of water stress across populations and explored how water availability and plant allocation mediate spatial variation in tree growth in a widespread oak species (Quercus douglasii Hook & Arn.). We conducted a range-wide survey of drought stress, xylem water isotopes, growth, and allocation traits across 15 sites spanning almost 1000 m difference in annual precipitation. We found little relationship between end-of-season water availability (predawn leaf water potentials) or

In arid regions, alkaline conditions resulting from soil sodification make iron unavailable, causing plants to suffer from salt-alkali stress. We hypothesized that halophilic species possess an exceptional iron uptake mechanism involving Na. Here, we investigated the effects of medium pH (acidic or neutral), amounts of iron (0.358 μM or 35.8 μM) and NaCl (5 or 100 mM) on Fe uptake, translocation, and allocation in salt tolerant Mexican tea (Dysphania ambrosioides L.), halophilic mesophyte Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris L. spp. cicla), and euhalophyte romeritos (Suaeda edulis Flores Olv. & Noguez)

Salt stress is one of the main abiotic stresses that affects peach growth. Hydrogen sulfide has an important role in regulating plant resistance to salt stress. However, the mechanism by which hydrogen sulfide regulates salt stress resistance is currently unclear in peach. Here, we investigated the mechanism by which hydrogen sulfide alleviates salt stress in peach trees. In our study, exogenous hydrogen sulfide enhances the activity of antioxidant enzymes and reduces the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, thereby mitigating salt stress damage to seedlings. Moreover, transcriptome analys

1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) is an iminosugar with notable pharmacological properties, and mulberry (Morus spp.) represents the richest natural source of this compound, particularly in young leaves and roots. Despite its tissue-specific distribution, the transcriptional regulatory mechanisms underlying its biosynthesis remain poorly understood. In this study, we integrated transcriptomic profiling, molecular assays, and phytohormone analyses to uncover a multilayered transcriptional network controlling DNJ biosynthesis in mulberry. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis identified a DNJ-asso

Microbial dissimilated iron reduction is one of the important driving forces of the biological and geochemical cycles of iron in nature. Plant root exudates dominated by organic acids are important electron donors of the rhizosphere dissimilar iron reduction microorganisms under flooded conditions. In this paper, we investigated the effects of different kinds and concentrations of organic acids on the dissimilation reduction process of goethite by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, and explored the effect of phase transformation of iron minerals on its adsorption of Cd. The results showed that the lo
