Spatial orientation and balance control changes induced by altered gravitoinertial force vectors.

To better understand the mechanisms of human adaptation to rotating environments, we exposed 19 healthy subjects and 8 vestibular-deficient subjects ("abnormal"; four bilateral and four unilateral lesions) to an interaural centripetal acceleration of 1 g (resultant 45 degrees roll-tilt of 1.4 g) on a 0.8-m-radius centrifuge for periods of 90 min. The subjects sat upright (body z-axis parallel to centrifuge rotation axis) in the dark with head stationary, except during 4 min of every 10 min, when they performed head saccades toward visual targets switched on at 3- to 5-s intervals at random loc

Relationship between stride length and walking rate in gait training for hemiparetic stroke patients.

Sixty-three male hemiparetic patients in the recovery stage were examined to investigate the relationship between stride length and walking rate during computer-assisted gait training during a period of 4 wk. The maximum walking speed for 10 m was significantly increased from 32.3 to 53.2 m/min on average, and the stride length and walking rate also increased. However, the ratio of stride length to walking rate did not change significantly in 4 wk, with the mean value being 0.0068 m/steps/min, approximately one-half that of healthy adults based on data from previous reports. The ratio of strid

Neurootological contributions to the diagnostic follow-up after whiplash injuries.

Only in 1992 we had to deal with about 197,731 cases of whiplash injuries due to traffic accidents on the roads of Germany. About 80% recover within a few months. However, about 15%-20% develop the so-called late whiplash injury syndrome with many complaints of the cervico-encaphalic syndrome including headache, vertigo, instability, nausea, tinnitus, hearing loss etc. The orthopedic as well as the radiological findings are mostly unsatisfactory with respect to the neurosensorial complaints. Therefore problems of evidence arise in compensation claims calling for additional neurootological medi

Postnatal effects of maternal exposure to nitrogen dioxide.

Pregnant albino rats were exposed to nitrogen dioxide in concentrations of 0.05, 0.10, 1 and 10 mg/m3 for 6 hr each day throughout gestation. Postnatal viability, growth, physical maturation, neuromotor development, and biochemical parameters indicative of NO2 oxidizing effects were studied in progeny up to the age of 3 months. It was found that although viability and physical development were little affected (only at 10 mg/m3), dose-dependent neurobehavioral deviations (such as disturbances in early neuromotor development, coordination deficits, retarded development of locomotion, reduced act

How emotions sculpt bodily expression: a systematic review of emotional induction, measures, and findings.

Emotional expressions conveyed through body postures and movements play a central role in social communication and adaptive behaviour, yet they have received considerably less attention than facial expressions. This systematic review examines how emotional bodily expressions are induced, measured, and analyzed. Forty-nine studies on healthy adults were included, covering (1) measurement technologies and body-related outcomes, (2) sample characteristics, (3) methods used to elicit, portray, and assess emotions, (4) single- versus multi- channel approaches, (5) the main findings, and (6) methodo

Biomechanical Effects of a Passive Lower-Limb Exoskeleton Designed for Half-Sitting Work Support on Walking.

The half-sitting posture is essential for many functional tasks performed by industrial workers. Thus, passive lower-limb exoskeletons, known as wearable chairs, are increasingly used to relieve lower-limb loading in such scenarios. However, although these devices lighten muscle effort during half-sitting tasks, they can disrupt walking mechanics and balance. Moreover, rigorous biomechanical data on joint moments and contact forces during walking with such a device remain scarce. Therefore, this study conducted a biomechanical evaluation of level walking with a wearable chair to quantify its e

Mitigating Compensatory Movements in Prosthesis Users via Adaptive Collaborative Robotics.

Prosthesis users can regain partial limb functionality, however, full natural limb mobility is rarely restored, often resulting in compensatory movements that lead to discomfort, inefficiency, and long-term physical strain. To address this issue, we propose a novel human-robot collaboration framework to mitigate compensatory mechanisms in prosthesis users by exploiting their residual motion capabilities while respecting task requirements. Our approach introduces a personalised mobility model that quantifies joint-specific functional limitations and the cost of compensatory movements. This mode

SMAS repositioning technique utilizing cog thread: Anatomical perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Face-lifting surgeries were once common among individuals over 60 years old due to skin laxity, but recent trends favor thread lifting in this age group. Understanding dynamic changes in facial anatomy during postural shifts is essential. METHOD: Fresh cadaver studies have demonstrated the passage of threads through the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) layer, confirming the efficacy of the technique. Proper insertion depth targeting SMAS repositioning, rather than superficial skin layers, is crucial. RESULT: The natural movement of tissues secured by thread (N-Cog a

Hyponatremia With Anticonvulsant Medications: A Narrative Review.

Hyponatremia is an adverse effect of many antiseizure medications (ASMs). It occurs with interference with the normal balance of electrolytes within the body. Various risk factors associated with the development of hyponatremia in patients taking these medications include age, gender, dosage, and combinations with other drugs. ASMs such as carbamazepine (CBZ), oxcarbazepine (OXC), and valproic acid have a higher risk of hyponatremia. Hyponatremia induced by an antiseizure medication can occur through various mechanisms depending on the drug's specific mechanism of action. Hyponatremia can be a

Mitochondrial dysfunction and skeletal muscle atrophy: Causes, mechanisms, and treatment strategies.

Skeletal muscle, which accounts for approximately 40% of total body weight, is one of the most dynamic and plastic tissues in the human body and plays a vital role in movement, posture and force production. More than just a component of the locomotor system, skeletal muscle functions as an endocrine organ capable of producing and secreting hundreds of bioactive molecules. Therefore, maintaining healthy skeletal muscles is crucial for supporting overall body health. Various pathological conditions, such as prolonged immobilization, cachexia, aging, drug-induced toxicity, and cardiovascular dise

Vision-based Estimation of MDS-UPDRS Gait Scores for Assessing Parkinson's Disease Motor Severity.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder primarily affecting motor function resulting in tremor at rest, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability. The physical severity of PD impairments can be quantified through the Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS), a widely used clinical rating scale. Accurate and quantitative assessment of disease progression is critical to developing a treatment that slows or stops further advancement of the disease. Prior work has mainly focused on dopamine transport neuroimaging for diagnosis or

Numerical evaluation of the correlation between the normal variation in the sagittal alignment of the lumbar spine and the spinal loads.

We present a numerical approach to reproduce various patterns of spino-pelvic organization. We wanted to predict the spinal loads in two static conditions (standing and holding a weight in the hands) based on parameters describing the shape of the lumbar spine: type following Roussouly classification, sacral slope, apex, inflection point and lumbar lordosis. Four hundred eighty finite element models including trunk muscles and representing the entire range of normal variability were created. The models predicted that, in the case of a moderate external load of 50 N, a lordotic and well balance
