Abnormal water balance in a mutant strain of chickens.

Polydipsia and polyuria are pronounced in chickens of a selected strain and this diabetes insipidus is inherited. The kidneys of such birds are capable of an antidiuretic response when lysine vasopressin or arginine vasotocin is injected. Osmotic pressure and sodium concentration of the plasmas of normal and mutant chickens are identical. Chicks predicted to have diabetes insipidus on the basis of parental pedigree are polydipsic.

In vivo antibacterial activity of chitosan nanoparticles against Clostridium perfringens-induced necrotic enteritis in broilers.

BACKGROUND : Necrotic enteritis (NE) is a major disease affecting broiler productivity, primarily caused by Clostridium perfringens. The extensive use of antibiotics to control NE has led to concerns about antimicrobial resistance and food safety, highlighting the need for safe and effective alternatives. Chitosan nanoparticles (CsNPs) have emerged as promising candidates due to their antibacterial, biodegradable, and nontoxic properties. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of CsNPs against C. perfringens infection in broilers by assessing clinical signs, mortality, growth p

Genomic epidemiology and phenotypic characterisation of Salmonella enterica serovar Panama in Victoria, Australia.

Salmonella enterica serovar Panama, a causative agent of non-typhoidal salmonellosis (NTS), is one of several serovars that causes invasive NTS disease (iNTS) in humans. S. Panama is an understudied pathogen, with its pathobiology poorly understood. It is a predominant iNTS serovar in Australia, a high-income country with high rates of salmonellosis, where S. Panama has been documented to have a high odds ratio (13.9-15.26) for causing iNTS. This study investigates the genomic epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance profiles of all S. Panama isolates recovered in Victoria, Australia, between

DNA Prime and Recombinant Protein Boost Vaccination Confers Chickens with Enhanced Protection against Chicken Infectious Anemia Virus.

Chicken infectious anemia (CIA) is an immunosuppressive disease caused by chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV) that poses a great threat to the poultry industry worldwide. At present, vaccination is an important way to prevent and control CIA. Apart from a CIAV-attenuated vaccine used in clinical practice, the research and development of a genetically engineered vaccine has good prospects. However, it is difficult to induce a strong protective effect with a single subunit vaccine or DNA vaccine. Therefore, the goal of this study is to develop and evaluate a DNA prime/protein boost vaccine st

Identification of a potential neutralizing linear epitope of hemagglutinin-neuraminidase in Newcastle disease virus.

BACKGROUND: The hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) protein of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is a major antigen that can induce protective antibodies in poultry. However, its antigenic epitopes have not been fully elucidated. Therefore, defining the linear epitopes of HN, especially neutralizing epitopes, will be useful for revealing its antigenic characterization. METHODS: In this study, we analyzed B-cell immunodominant epitopes (IDEs) of the HN protein from the vaccine strain LaSota using pepscan technology with LaSota-specific chicken hyperimmune antisera. We constructed IDEs-RFP plasmids an

Response of lymphatic tissues to natural feed additives, curcumin (Curcuma longa) and black cumin seeds (Nigella sativa), in broilers against Pasteurella multocida.

The antibiotic residues and pathogenic resistance against the drug are very common in poultry because of antibiotics used in their feed. It is necessary to use natural feed additives as effective alternatives instead of a synthetic antibiotic. This study aimed to investigate the immune response of Nigella sativa and Curcuma longa in broilers under biological stress against Pasteurella multocida. The total 100, one-day-old chicks were divided into 5 groups. Groups 1 and 2 served as control negative and control positive. Both control groups were receiving simple diet without any natural feed add

Limited Cross-Protection against Infectious Bronchitis Provided by Recombinant Infectious Bronchitis Viruses Expressing Heterologous Spike Glycoproteins.

Gammacoronavirus infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) causes an economically important respiratory disease of poultry. Protective immunity is associated with the major structural protein, spike (S) glycoprotein, which induces neutralising antibodies and defines the serotype. Cross-protective immunity between serotypes is limited and can be difficult to predict. In this study, the ability of two recombinant IBV vaccine candidates, BeauR-M41(S) and BeauR-4/91(S), to induce cross-protection against a third serotype, QX, was assessed. Both rIBVs are genetically based on the Beaudette genome with only

Erysipelothrix Spp.: Past, Present, and Future Directions in Vaccine Research.

Erysipelothrix spp. comprise a group of small Gram-positive bacteria that can infect a variety of hosts including mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and insects. Among the eight Erysipelothrix species that have been described to date, only Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae plays a major role in farmed livestock where it is the causative agent of erysipelas. E. rhusiopathiae also has zoonotic potential and can cause erysipeloid in humans with a clear occupational link to meat and fish industries. While there are 28 known Erysipelothrix serovars, over 80% of identified isolates belong to serovars 1 or 2.

Arsenic-induced cardiotoxicity correlates with mitochondrial damage and trace elements imbalance in broiler chickens.

Arsenic-based drugs as food additive were used in poultry. However, excessive arsenic exposure can disturb myocardial cell metabolism, which results in the inhibition of growth and development of chickens. Since disordered mitochondria influences cardiac physiology and pathology, a better understanding of the mechanisms modulating cardiomyocyte mitochondria process is critical for identifying the potent detoxication targets under arsenic exposure in chickens. Male Hy-line chickens (1-day-old) were fed either a basal diet or an arsenic trioxide (As2O3)-supplemented diet containing 7.5, 15, and

A systematic review of FTA cards® as a tool for viral RNA preservation in fieldwork: Are they safe and effective?

BackgroundDetection and characterization of viral RNA pathogens from fieldwork are challenging due to the instability of the RNA molecule. FTA cards® have proved useful for sample storage and latter identification of pathogens with importance for agricultural, animal and human health: however, for optimal handling, processing, and biosafety measures are not well-established. ObjectiveThis systematic review aims to summarize the reported effectiveness of FTA cards® for storage and transport of viral RNA, as well as the conditions for their handling and use in downstream processes. Finally, the

Knowledge, attitudes and practices of livestock and aquaculture producers regarding antimicrobial use and resistance in Vietnam.

The use of antibiotics in livestock production is considered a major driver of antibiotic resistance on a global scale. In Vietnam, small- and medium-scale livestock producers dominate the domestic market and regulatory pushes have done little to decrease antibiotic use. In order to inform future policy directions, this study aims to explore knowledge, attitudes, and practices amongst livestock producers to identify their perspectives on antibiotic use and resistance. A total of 392 small- and medium-scale producers specialized in pig, poultry and aquaculture production participated in the stu

Diagnostic Aspects of Veterinary and Human Aspergillosis.

The genus Aspergillus is composed of more than 300 species, a fraction of which are involved in animal or human infections mostly following environmental exposure. Various risk factors (i.e., immunosuppression, tuberculosis) have been recognized for human whereas for veterinary infections, unhygienic management, trauma, anatomical conformation of the skull, or suspected immunological deficiencies have been suggested. In animals, aspergillosis is mostly sporadic but in some circumstance such as infections on poultry farms may involve the whole flock. Since the high prevalence of immunosuppressi

DETECTION OF LYMPHOPROLIFERATIVE DISEASE VIRUS IN CANADA IN A SURVEY FOR VIRUSES IN ONTARIO WILD TURKEYS ( MELEAGRIS GALLOPAVO).

The successful reintroduction of Wild Turkeys ( Meleagris gallopavo) to Ontario, Canada, has led to established populations in southern portions of the province and currently allows for biannual hunting seasons. These populations geographically overlap Domestic Turkey farms, an important sector of the provincial agri-food industry. Potential pathogen transmission between Wild Turkeys and Domestic Turkeys ( Meleagris gallopavo) is a concern, because they are susceptible to infection with many of the same pathogens and have direct and indirect contact in outdoor or open farm settings and contami

Evaluating interest in an influenza A(H5N1) vaccine among laboratory workers who work with highly-pathogenic avian influenza viruses in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Highly pathogenic avian influenza A (HPAI) viruses found in poultry and wild birds occasionally infect humans and can cause serious disease. In 2014, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) reviewed data from one licensed ASO3-adjuvanted influenza A(H5N1) vaccine for consideration of use during inter-pandemic periods among persons with occupational exposure. To guide vaccine policy decisions, we conducted a survey of laboratory workers to assess demand for HPAI vaccination. METHODS: We designed an anonymous web survey (EpiInfo 7.0) to collect information on demogra

Chlamydia psittaci: update on an underestimated zoonotic agent.

Chlamydia (C.) psittaci is an economically relevant pathogen in poultry and pet birds, where it causes psittacosis/ornithosis, and also a human pathogen causing atypical pneumonia after zoonotic transmission. Despite its well-documented prevalence, the agent has received less attention by researchers than other Chlamydia spp. in the last decades. In the present paper, we review recently published data on C. psittaci infection and attempt to single out characteristic features distinguishing it from related chlamydial agents. It is remarkable that C. psittaci is particularly efficient in dissemi
