BACKGROUND: In patients with breast cancer, tumors showing low human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression may not demonstrate clinical benefits from chemotherapy. Since traditional diagnostic methods for detecting HER2 expression require invasive tissue biopsies, we propose a less invasive approach that combines attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy with machine learning to detect breast cancer with low plasma HER2 expression.
METHODS: The leftover heparinized plasma with low HER2 expression from 55 breast cancer patients and 32 health

Sepsis remains a significant contributor to neonatal mortality worldwide. However, the nonspecific nature of sepsis symptoms in neonates often leads to the necessity of empirical treatment, placing a burden of ineffective treatment on patients. Furthermore, the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance is exacerbating the situation. Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming medical practice and in hospital settings. AI shows great potential for assessing sepsis risk and devising optimal treatment strategies. Background/Objectives: This review aims to investigate the application of AI in

The escalating drug addiction crisis in the United States underscores the urgent need for innovative therapeutic strategies. This study embarked on an innovative and rigorous strategy to unearth potential drug repurposing candidates for opioid and cocaine addiction treatment, bridging the gap between transcriptomic data analysis and drug discovery. We initiated our approach by conducting differential gene expression analysis on addiction-related transcriptomic data to identify key genes. We propose a novel topological differentiation to identify key genes from a protein-protein interaction net

A growing body of literature suggests that developmental exposure to individual or mixtures of environmental chemicals (ECs) is associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, investigating the effect of interactions among these ECs can be challenging. We introduced a combination of the classical exposure-mixture Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regression and a machine-learning method termed Signed iterative Random Forest (SiRF) to discover synergistic interactions between ECs that are (1) associated with higher odds of ASD diagnosis, (2) mimic toxicological interactions, and (3) are pres

Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive bacterium found on human skin that causes skin and soft tissue infections, as well as pneumonia, osteomyelitis, and endocarditis. The prevalence of antibiotic resistant strains has made the treatments less effective. An efficient alternate method for battling these contagious diseases is anti-virulence strategy. The AgrA protein, a key activator of Accessory Gene Regulator system in S. aureus, is vital to the virulence of the organism and, consequently, its pathogenesis. Using a Machine Learning algorithm, the Support Vector Machine (SVM), and a ligand-

Resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) detects functional connectivity (FC) abnormalities that occur in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). FC of the default mode network (DMN) is commonly impaired in AD and MCI. We conducted a systematic review aimed at determining the diagnostic power of rs-fMRI to identify FC abnormalities in the DMN of patients with AD or MCI compared with healthy controls (HCs) using machine learning (ML) methods. Multimodal support vector machine (SVM) algorithm was the commonest form of ML method utilized. Multiple kernel appr

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is strongly associated with metabolic dysfunction and may contribute to the development of hepatic disorders such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and liver fibrosis. Early identification of hepatic involvement in OSA is important for preventing long-term complications. This study aimed to develop and compare artificial intelligence (AI)-based models using non-invasive clinical parameters to predict steatosis, MASLD, and liver fibrosis in patients with OSA.
METHODS: This prospective study included patients diagnosed

BACKGROUND: The stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) has recently been suggested as a dependable indication for predicting adverse outcomes in critically ill ICU patients. Previous studies have primarily focused on cardiovascular disorders include myocardial infarction and coronary artery disease, but the connection between SHR and prognosis in severely ill individuals with cerebrovascular disorders, particularly those with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage, remains unclear. This investigation aims to investigate the relationship between SHR and adverse outcomes in critically ill individuals ex

BACKGROUND: Early identification of patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF) who are at risk of failing high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy could facilitate closer monitoring, and timely adjustment/escalation of treatment. We aimed to establish whether machine learning (ML) models could predict HFNC outcome, early in the course of treatment, with greater accuracy than currently used clinical indices.
METHODS: We developed ML models trained using measurements made within the first 2 h of treatment from 184 AHRF patients (37% HFNC failures) treated at the respiratory ICU of t
