Cytomegalovirus infection in preterm triplets transmitted via breast milk.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) may transmit perinatally or from breast milk. The risk for development of symptomatic CMV disease in very-low-birth-weight premature infants after transmission from maternal breast milk is not clear. There are scarce data in the literature about congenital CMV infection in multiple pregnancies, being mostly with twin gestations. Here we present a unique case of triplets with CMV infection transmitted via breast milk.

An association between maternal weight change in the year before pregnancy and infant birth weight: ELFE, a French national birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Weight-control interventions in pregnant women with overweight or obesity have limited effectiveness for fetal growth and birth outcomes. Interventions or prevention programs aiming at the pre-pregnancy period should be considered. However, how the woman's weight change before pregnancy affects fetal growth is not known. We investigated the association between weight change over the year before pregnancy and birth weight. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We used the inclusion data of 16,395 women from the ELFE French national birth cohort, a nationally representative cohort in which infants

Placental mapping of patients with birth weights below the third percentile.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a frequent diagnosis with multiple etiologies (maternal, fetal, environmental) for which the placenta can be involved. A postnatal etiological work-up, such as placental pathology analysis, can help to identify the etiology of FGR and implement measures to prevent recurrence in a subsequent pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to unravel and provide an update on the mapping of possible placental lesions in the context of hypotrophic birth (below the third percentile). METHOD: This is a single-center retrospective observational cohort st

Protocol for a prospective observational cohort study to assess clinical applications of expanded noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) in pregnancies with placental dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Expanded non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) utilizing cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in maternal blood enables the detection of common trisomies as well as rare autosomal trisomies and large deletions and duplications within the genome of the placenta and, therefore, the fetus. Given that cfDNA predominantly originates from trophoblastic cells, expanded NIPT also holds the potential to reveal confined placental mosaicism (CPM). CPM has been associated with placental dysfunction, which can result in reduced levels of the circulating placental biomarkers routinely tested as part of first-

Predictors of Fetal Attachment, Anxiety, Stress, and Worry in Unintended Pregnancies in the Primary Care Center in Southern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Despite the prevalence of unintended pregnancies, little is known about the connections between psychosocial and sociodemographic characteristics. This study explored the predictors of fetal attachment, worry, anxiety, and stress in unintended pregnancies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on 229 father and mother pairs from two primary healthcare centers in Fars province in southern Iran. Data were collected in a face-to-face survey using the Parents Fetal Attachment Scale, Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Cambridge Worr

[ESC Guidelines on cardiovascular diseases and pregnancy-most important facts of the 2025 update].

The 2025 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Guidelines on cardiovascular disease in pregnancy represents the second revision of the guideline versions published in 2011 and 2018. The new version aims to incorporate the most up-to-date evidence and update the resulting recommendations for clinical practice. The experts appointed by the ESC constitute a new task force compared with the first two versions. However, the thematic focus does not differ fundamentally from the 2018 guidelines. In view of the expanding evidence base, several chapters have become substantially more precise, for exampl

Potential Risk Factors for Developing Cesarean Scar Pregnancy in Women With a History of Cesarean Section.

OBJECTIVES: Cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) occurs in 0.2%-0.5% of women with a previous cesarean section globally. Multiple factors influence the development of CSP; however, to date, the critical factors contributing to the development of CSP have not been fully explored due to its relatively low incidence. Moreover, CSP can be clinically categorized into type 1 and type 2 CSP. In this retrospective study with a large sample size, we investigated potential risk factors that could contribute to CSP development. METHODS: Two hundred-one women diagnosed with CSP, either type 1 or type 2 CSP, and

Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy in Saudi Arabia: Evaluating Maternal and Neonatal Risks, Outcomes, and Aspirin Prophylaxis: A Review Article.

Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, pose significant risks to both maternal and neonatal health. This review article evaluates the prevalence, maternal and neonatal outcomes, and the efficacy of aspirin prophylaxis in managing these conditions in Saudi Arabia. Utilizing data from multiple retrospective studies and recent guidelines, we highlight the regional variations in the outcomes of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Severe complications such as Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes and Low Platelets (HELLP) syndrome occurred in 6.6% of cases, whi

What Do We Know about Peripartum Cardiomyopathy? Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow.

Peripartum cardiomyopathy is a disease that occurs during or after pregnancy and leads to a significant decline in cardiac function in previously healthy women. Peripartum cardiomyopathy has a varying prevalence among women depending on the part of the world where they live, but it is associated with a significant mortality and morbidity in this population. Therefore, timely diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of this disease from its onset are of utmost importance. Although many risk factors are associated with the occurrence of peripartum cardiomyopathy, such as conditions of life, age of t

Development and internal validation of a risk prediction model for stress urinary incontinence throughout pregnancy: A multicenter retrospective longitudinal study in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop a risk prediction model for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) throughout pregnancy in Indonesian women. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective longitudinal study involving pregnant women in Indonesia, who sought care at obstetrics clinics from January 2023 to March 2023, encompassing all stages of pregnancy. We collected data on their predictive factors and SUI outcome. SUI was diagnosed based on responses to the "leaks when you are physically active/exercising" criterion in the ICIQ-UI-SF questionnaire during our investigation of the partici

Preeclampsia in 2023: Time for preventing early onset- and term preeclampsia: The paramount role of gestational weight gain.

The 2023 goal is to halve the incidence of preeclampsia worldwide to reach 3 million cases per year vs the current approximately 7 million cases. Preventive treatment by low dose aspirin only halves the incidence of early-onset preeclampsia (EOP < 34 weeks gestation) in high-risk women. However, 90% of PE cases are the late onset form (LOP, 34 weeks onward) proportionally associated with increasing maternal pre-pregnancy BMI. In 2018, we published a new method to calculate individualized optimal gestational weight gain based on normal Gaussian distribution of neonatal birthweights (SGA 10%, LG

A feature of maternal sleep apnea during gestation causes autism-relevant neuronal and behavioral phenotypes in offspring.

Mounting epidemiologic and scientific evidence indicates that many psychiatric disorders originate from a complex interplay between genetics and early life experiences, particularly in the womb. Despite decades of research, our understanding of the precise prenatal and perinatal experiences that increase susceptibility to neurodevelopmental disorders remains incomplete. Sleep apnea (SA) is increasingly common during pregnancy and is characterized by recurrent partial or complete cessations in breathing during sleep. SA causes pathological drops in blood oxygen levels (intermittent hypoxia, IH)

Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes of Women Conceived Less Than 6 Months after First Trimester Dilation and Curettage.

Objective: To evaluate the maternal and neonatal outcomes of pregnancies conceived ≤6 months after first trimester (<14 weeks) dilation and curettage (D&C). Methods: A retrospective computerized database study of women who conceived ≤6 months following a missed abortion and delivered in a single tertiary medical center between 2016 and 2021. The maternal and neonatal outcomes of women who had D&C were compared to those of women who had non-medical or spontaneous miscarriages. The primary outcome of this study was the rate of preterm birth (<37 weeks). Secondary outcomes were adverse maternal a

Second trimester maternal serum biomarkers and the risk of cerebral palsy.

AIMS: To investigate whether second trimester maternal serum screening (2TMSS) biomarkers are associated with cerebral palsy (CP) and identify CP characteristics associated with abnormal biomarker levels. METHOD: In this retrospective case-control data linkage study, we linked mothers of 129 singleton CP cases from a population register to their 2TMSS records and selected 10 singleton pregnancy controls per case (n = 1290). We compared mean and abnormal levels of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotrophin (β-hCG), unconjugated estriol (uE3), and inhibin between cas

Factors Influencing the Compliance of Pregnant Women with Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation in the Philippines: 2017 Philippine Demographic and Health Survey Analysis.

Anemia in pregnancy, which is a public health concern for most developing countries, is predominantly caused by iron deficiency. At least, 180 days of iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation is recommended for pregnant women to mitigate anemia and its adverse effects. This study aimed to examine compliance with the recommendation of IFA supplementation and its underlying factors using the 2017 Philippine National Demographic and Health Survey data. The variables assessed included age, highest level of education, occupation, wealth index, ethnicity, religion, residence, number of pregnancies,
