A Phenomenological Investigation of Interdisciplinary Mental Health Collaboration in Schools.

BACKGROUND: Youth mental health concerns are rising, with schools key access points for support. Interdisciplinary collaboration among school mental health professionals (SMHPs) is vital for addressing complex needs but is often hindered by role ambiguity, staffing shortages, and systemic barriers. This study explored SMHPs' lived collaboration experiences in U.S. public schools. METHODS: Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 SMHPs across K-12 settings. Data were analyzed to identify themes describing collaboration experiences. RESUL

Case Report: Overload of a cross-country skier in elite sports, somatoform autonomic disorder, and end-of-career support.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, sports psychiatry and psychotherapy has developed rapidly. Under the umbrella of the International Society for Sports Psychiatry (ISSP), the first international consensus statement on sports psychiatry was recently published. Fields of sports psychiatry were identified. In the field of competitive and elite sports, the end of a sports career is a vulnerable phase. The end of a sports career can lead to an increased prevalence of psychiatric symptoms and disorders. This is illustrated using the case of a cross-country skier. CASE DESCRIPTION: The interactions bet

When science remembers what is neglected: addressing the risks of rodent-borne diseases in urban Latin America.

Latin American cities face deep socio-economic inequalities that impact health, education and the environment. These disparities influence zoonotic disease dynamics through complex host-pathogen-environment-human interactions. This study explores zoonotic risks associated with rodent communities across diverse social and environmental settings in the Matanza-Riachuelo River Basin, one of the most polluted urban areas in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Between 2022 and 2023, rodent community composition and health status were assessed at 22 sites, ranging from low-income neighbourhoods to green areas

Blood-borne virus transmission in an urban, culturally diverse neighbourhood: results from a cross-sectional bio-behavioural survey using innovative outreach methods in a hard-to-reach population.

UNLABELLED: Background Following a HIV outbreak among Aboriginal people in a culturally diverse inner-city suburb of Melbourne, a blood-borne virus (BBV) screening program was conducted to inform public health interventions to prevent transmission and facilitate timely diagnosis and linkage to care. METHODS: In August-September 2014, community health workers recruited people who inject drugs (PWID) from a local needle and syringe program. Participants were tested for hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), HIV and syphilis and completed a bio-behavioural questionnaire. RESULTS: In

Caring for our wounded warriors: A qualitative examination of health-related quality of life in caregivers of individuals with military-related traumatic brain injury.

The purpose of this study was to develop a conceptual framework that captures aspects of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for caregivers of individuals with military-related traumatic brain injury (TBI). We analyzed qualitative data from nine focus groups composed of caregivers of wounded warriors with a medically documented TBI. Focus group participants were recruited through hospital-based and/or community outreach efforts at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the University of Michigan, and Hearts of Valor support groups (Tennessee and Washington). Participants were the

Adverse childhood experiences, mental health, and quality of life of Chilean girls placed in foster care: An exploratory study.

In Latin America, little research has been conducted regarding exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), mental health, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among foster children. This study examined the association between ACEs and mental health, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and HRQoL in Chilean foster girls relative to age-matched Chilean family girls. Data were obtained from 27 Chilean foster girls and 27 Chilean girls ages 6 to 17 years living in family homes. Standardized self- and proxy-report measures were used. Foster girls reported more ACEs than controls in ter

Counseling and provision of long-acting reversible contraception in the US: national survey of nurse practitioners.

OBJECTIVE: Nurse practitioners (NPs) provide frontline care in women's health, including contraception, an essential preventive service. Their importance for contraceptive care will grow, with healthcare reforms focused on affordable primary care. This study assessed practice and training needs to prepare NPs to offer high-efficacy contraceptives - intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants. METHOD: A US nationally representative sample of nurse practitioners in primary care and women's health was surveyed in 2009 (response rate 69%, n=586) to assess clinician knowledge and practices, guided by

[Neurological newborn in our center and follow-up].

INTRODUCTION: The progress made in perinatal health care in recent years has changed the epidemiology of neurological diseases during the neonatal period. The reduction in neonatal mortality has been accompanied by an increasingly large number of patients suffering from disabling diseases or with a risk of suffering from them; a prolonged follow-up and the joint efforts of neonatologists and neuropaediatricians are therefore essential. DEVELOPMENT: We review the welfare work and demand for health care for newborn infants with neurological disorders in our service, as well as perinatal neurolo

Complementing humanitarian staff care with arts-based initiatives? Viewpoints from in-house mental health professionals.

Over the past decade, research on the mental health of humanitarian staff has gained momentum, prompting organizations to increasingly support and invest in workers' mental health and well-being. However, many of the existing initiatives-such as one-on-one talk therapy-are grounded in Euro-American traditions. These approaches may not align with the cultural frameworks or preferences of all staff, potentially leaving significant segments of the workforce underserved. Furthermore, challenges related to team cohesion are difficult to address within current staff care structures. Against this bac

Emergency obstetric and newborn care in conflict-affected Somalia: rural access inequities, referral barriers, and health-system priorities - a policy and practice review.

Emergency obstetric and newborn care remains a critical maternal-health and health-system priority for reducing preventable maternal and neonatal deaths in Somalia. Prolonged conflict, displacement, recurrent climate shocks, poverty, and rural access inequities continue to expose pregnant women and newborns to delays in reaching timely emergency care. Although previous reviews have described broad maternal and newborn health challenges in Somalia, less attention has been given to how emergency obstetric and newborn care gaps interact with rural geography, insecurity, referral barriers, workfor

Who pays to treat malaria and how much? Analysis of the cost of illness, equity and economic burden of malaria in Uganda.

Case management of malaria in Africa has evolved markedly over the past 20 years and updated cost estimates are needed to guide malaria control policies. We estimated the cost of malaria illness to households and the public health service and assessed the equity of these costs in Uganda. From December 2021 to May 2022, we conducted a costing exercise in eight government-run health centres covering seven sub-regions, collecting health service costs from patient observations, records review and a time-and-motion study. From November 2021 to January 2022, we gathered data on households' cost of i

Intersecting Structural and Psychosocial Conditions: Investigating Injection Drug Use and HIV Among Transgender Women.

BACKGROUND: Transgender women continue to face a significant burden of health disparities with HIV infection as a critical public health concern. Substance use is higher among transgender women than among cisgender women. However, little is known about transgender women who inject drugs and risk for HIV in the United States. The objectives were to explore HIV prevalence, injection-related behaviors, and HIV prevention and care outcomes among transgender women who inject drugs and to compare transgender women with a general sample of persons who inject drugs. METHODS: Participants from the Nat

An alcohol-related liver disease multi-stakeholder hub (ARMS-Hub) to enhance research activity in underserved communities in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is the third leading risk factor of death and disability in the UK and costs the NHS £3.5 billion per year. Despite the high prevalence and healthcare burden of Alcohol-related Liver Disease (ArLD), there has been minimal research addressing prevention, morbidity and mortality. Reasons for this include stigma and lack of interest from public, charitable and commercial funding bodies. The objectives of this project were to identify and develop interdisciplinary partnerships, to explore stigma in ArLD, to develop a representative Patient and Public Involvement and Engagem

A qualitative assessment of barriers to iron and folic acid supplementation among pregnant women in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation remains an effective strategy in the prevention of maternal anemia and low birthweight and is universally recommended by WHO. However, uptake of IFA has varied globally due to challenges with acceptability, supply and distribution, counselling and knowledge, and access to health services. In Botswana, nearly one-third of pregnant women engaged in antenatal care do not receive IFA, despite it being standard of care. The objectives of this study were to assess knowledge of and barriers and facilitators to IFA supplementation before

Clinical and economic implications of increasing access to herpes zoster vaccination rate in community pharmacies.

BACKGROUND: A community pharmacist plays an important role in providing vaccination to the general public in the United States. No economic models have been used to assess the impact of these services on public health and economic benefits. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to estimate the clinical and economic implications of community pharmacy-based herpes zoster (HZ) vaccination services with a hypothetical scenario of nonpharmacy-based vaccination in the State of Utah. METHODS: A hybrid model of decision tree and Markov models was used to estimate lifetime cost and health outcomes. This open-c

Personal and sexual boundaries: the experiences of people with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Previous research shows that people with intellectual disabilities have less knowledge about sexual health and are more vulnerable to victimisation. In cases of sexual abuse, they are likely to encounter the criminal justice system as vulnerable witnesses. Several challenges arise when people with intellectual disabilities are in communication with the criminal justice system. We aimed to explore the perceptions, experiences and knowledge of people with intellectual disabilities regarding personal and sexual boundaries in order to identify factors relevant for preventing sexual abu
