New Nursing Faculty and Incivility: Applying Mindfulness-Based Strategies.

Workplace incivility remains a problem within the nursing profession. As nurse leaders, we must recognize and not ignore the complexity of cultures that have adapted incivility into the work environment. Nursing education is a discipline that requires collaborative team work, independent drive, and commitment. New nursing faculty experiencing incivility can use mindfulness-based meditation approaches to cope with uncivil behaviors experienced within the workplace. Nurse educators applying the concepts of mindfulness can learn how to provide themselves self-care by reducing stress, as enhanced

Trauma and homelessness in youth: Psychopathology and intervention.

Youth runaway behavior and homelessness (RHY) in the U.S. is increasingly common, with prevalence estimated at 1-1.7 million youth. RHY have multiple, overlapping problems often including poor physical and mental health, frequent street victimization, and histories of physical and sexual abuse. Further, current street victimization interacts with childhood abuse to produce complex, unique presentations of traumatic symptoms and related disorders in runaway and homeless youth. This review paper explores (1) the role of childhood trauma in the genesis of runaway and homeless behavior, and (2) ho

Gambling Outcome Expectancies and Gambling Behavior Among African-American Adolescents: Gender as a Moderating Variable.

Most high school adolescents have reported past year gambling, and males gamble more frequently and problematically than females. Ethnic minority adolescents appear to be gambling at a higher rate than Caucasian adolescents. There is evidence indicating that adolescent gambling outcome expectancies are correlated with gambling behavior, but limited evidence that this relation differs by gender. In the present study gender was evaluated as a moderator in the relation between gambling outcome expectancies and gambling behaviors in an African-American high school sample. Males gambled more freque

[Dialectical-behavioral outpatient therapy for adolescents with impulsive and self-harming behavior].

A slightly modified version of the Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) for impulsive and self-injurious adolescents has been implemented in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Service in Zurich, Switzerland, since 2005. This DBT-A comprises individual therapy, skills training, and a single parent meeting over a 6-month period. This article reports on the translation of this approach into clinical practice and presents an evaluation based on the clinical quality of control assessments. Participants of the treatment program were 43 female adolescents aged 14 to 19 living in t

The role of early developmental intervention to influence neurobehavioral outcomes of children born preterm.

Children who are born preterm are at risk of adverse long-term neurobehavioral outcomes, including cognitive, motor, and behavioral impairments. Early developmental interventions that commence within the first year after preterm birth have a preventative focus, with the aim to positively influence the developmental trajectory. While there is a great deal of heterogeneity in the research trials to date, there is evidence that early developmental interventions have a moderate effect on cognitive and behavioral outcomes up to preschool age, with some evidence for improved motor outcomes. This rev

Extradural temporopolar approach for parahypothalamic hypothalamic hamartoma and use of posterior communicating artery as resection margin pointer.

BACKGROUND: Hypothalamic hamartomas (HH) are malformations originating from the hypothalamus and are associated with seizures, hormonal and behavioral abnormalities. METHOD: Most patients, especially those with a typical syndrome characterized by gelastic seizures, precocious puberty, cognitive decline, and behavior problems, are diagnosed in childhood. Pedunculated and parahypothalamic types of hamartomas are attached to the floor by a narrow or wide peduncle in the absence of distortion of the overlying hypothalamus. This location is most commonly associated with a clinical presentation of

The dysregulated cluster in personality profiling research: longitudinal stability and associations with bulimic behaviors and correlates.

Among cluster analytic studies of the personality profiles associated with bulimia nervosa, a group of individuals characterized by emotional lability and behavioral dysregulation (i.e., a dysregulated cluster) has emerged most consistently. However, previous studies have all been cross-sectional and mostly used clinical samples. This study aimed to replicate associations between the dysregulated personality cluster and bulimic symptoms and related characteristics using a longitudinal, population-based sample. Participants were females assessed at ages 17 and 25 from the Minnesota Twin Family

Addressing the mental health needs of pregnant and parenting adolescents.

Adolescent parenthood is associated with a range of adverse outcomes for young mothers, including mental health problems such as depression, substance abuse, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Teen mothers are also more likely to be impoverished and reside in communities and families that are socially and economically disadvantaged. These circumstances can adversely affect maternal mental health, parenting, and behavior outcomes for their children. In this report, we provide an overview of the mental health challenges associated with teen parenthood, barriers that often prevent teen mothers fr

Prevalence and correlates of truancy in the US: results from a national sample.

Truancy has been a persistent problem in the United States for more than 100 years. Although truancy is commonly reported as a risk factor for substance use, delinquency, dropout, and a host of other negative outcomes for youth, there has been surprisingly little empirical investigation into understanding the causes and correlates of truancy using large, nationally representative samples. Using the adolescent sample (N = 17,482) of the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), this study presents the prevalence of truancy and examines individual, school engagement, parental, and beh

Examination and validation of a measure of anxiety specific to children with autism spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Investigated the use of a combined scale (Worry/Depressed and Avoidant scales) from the Autism Spectrum Disorders-Comorbidity for Children (ASD-CC) as a measure of anxiety. Alternative methods of measuring anxiety were examined using the ASD-CC in an ASD population. METHODS: Participants included 147 children, age 2-16 years, evincing a mixture of behavior problems. Comparisons between scores on the ASD-CC and Behavior Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2) were examined to determine the most efficacious method of measuring anxiety and to establish convergent and d

Emotional, behavioral, and cognitive factors that differentiate obsessive-compulsive disorder and other anxiety disorders in youth.

Abstract The current study examined specific emotional, behavioral, and cognitive variables that may distinguish obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social phobia (SoP), and separation anxiety disorder (SAD) in youth. Youth with OCD (n=26) and other anxiety disorders (ADs; n=31), aged 7-12 years (56.1% males), and their parents participated. The study compared the two anxious groups on levels of emotional, behavioral, and cognitive functioning, as well as impairment associated with the disorder. Results indicated that in comparison to youth with GAD, So

New evidence from the grey area: Danish results for at-risk gambling.

This study investigates the differences between at-risk gamblers and no-risk gamblers to provide a closer inspection of the characteristics and gambling behavior of at-risk gamblers. The data stem from the first Danish large-scale nationwide study, in 2005, followed by a second wave interview in 2006. The first wave sample consists of 4,932 current gamblers with no current gambling problems or pathology, and the second wave re-interviewed 379 of them. The analysis involves both a logistic regression and cross-tabulations. The results show that at-risk gamblers and no-risk gamblers have signifi

Increased levels of anxiety-related behaviors in a Tsc2 dominant negative transgenic mouse model of tuberous sclerosis.

Tuberous sclerosis (TSC) is a single-gene disorder caused by heterozygous mutations in the TSC1 or TSC2 gene. TSC is often associated with neurological (e.g., epilepsy), cognitive (intellectual disabilities, specific neuropsychological impairments) and behavioral pathologies (e.g., autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). In addition, there is a high prevalence of psychiatric problems in TSC populations, including anxiety and mood disorders. To date, little is known about the pathogenetic bases of these associated psychiatric symptoms; for instance, it is unclear whether they are roo

Varenicline in smoking cessation.

Varenicline, an alpha4beta2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonist, is the newest drug in the armamentarium of tobacco-addiction treatment. Improved smoking quit rates with varenicline are seen in comparison with other pharmacotherapies or behavioral treatments alone. Efficacy, tolerability and safety have been demonstrated in healthy smokers and in smokers with cardiovascular or pulmonary comorbidity, as well as in smokeless tobacco users. Varenicline is started 1 week before a target quit date, uptitrated to 1 mg twice daily, and continued for 12-24 weeks. Post-marketing reports ha

Psychometric characteristics of the Teen Addiction Severity Index-Two (T-ASI-2).

The Teen Addiction Severity Index-Two (T-ASI-2) was developed as an extension of the T-ASI to assess the severity of substance abuse and related problems among adolescents (N = 371) 12-19 years of age. The T-ASI-2 consists of 18 domains that assess current use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other drugs, as well as mental health service utilization, treatment satisfaction, school difficulties, social functioning with family members and peers, substance use by family members and peers, depression, anxiety, attention deficit, hyperactivity, defiant and risky behaviors, and readiness for chan

Impulsivity in depressed children and adolescents: a comparison between behavioral and neuropsychological data.

Impulsivity at the neuropsychological and behavioral levels was investigated in a sample of drug-naive depressed children and adolescents. The performance of 21 patients with a current diagnosis of mood disorder was compared with that of 21 normal controls on tests of executive functions related to impulsivity (Matching Familiar Figures Test, Continuous Performance Test, Verbal Fluency, Stroop Test, and Walk-Don't Walk) and on impulsive/restless behavior on the Conners' Parent Rating Scale. Depressed children and adolescents showed a pattern of conservative response style, with slow reaction t

[Pathological buying -- a literature review].

This review summarizes the literature on pathological buying published during the past 15 years. Pathological or compulsive buying is defined as frequent preoccupation with buying or impulses to buy that are experienced as irresistible, intrusive, and/or senseless. The buying behavior causes marked distress, interferes with social functioning, and often results in financial problems. Studies on the phenomenology, diagnosis, classification, comorbidity, epidemiology, and treatment are presented. Pathological buying should be diagnosed as impulse control disorder not otherwise specified (ICD-10

Psychopathology, GABA, and the Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome: a review and case study.

An adult female with congenital Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS) and severe mental retardation is described, who presented with symptoms of severe over-activity, short attention span, mood lability, and aggressive outbursts in a cyclical pattern, suggestive of recurrent manic-like episodes. These symptoms improved significantly with divalproex (Depakote) monotherapy. Review of the existing studies showed that 10-76% of persons with RTS may be identified with similar behavioral symptoms. We postulate other persons with RTS may respond to divalproex, and there may be some relationship between the

Narcolepsy -- cataplexy and psychoanalytic theory of sleep and dreams.

Narcolepsy had been documented some twenty years before the psychoanalytic movement, emphasizing the central role of sleep and dreams in the understanding of mental health, offered an entirely novel theory of its aetiology. And when the full range of the behavioral aspects of the condition were documented, it was obvious that intense psychoanalytic interest in it was inevitable. Unfortunately, even mainstream neurology, lacking any rival physiological explanation, for a time tended to entertain a definite role for such beliefs, at least in some cases. However, such a theory involving outre con
